WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama on Friday nominated Sen. John Kerry as his next secretary of state, elevating the longtime lawmaker and foreign policy expert to the top diplomatic job he had coveted. "He is not going to need a lot of on-the-job training," Obama said, standing alongside Kerry at the White House. "Few individuals know as many presidents and prime ministers or grasp our policies as firmly as John Kerry."

President Obama is giving a special gift to federal workers: a day off on Christmas Eve, apparently with pay. "All executive branch departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Monday, December 24, 2012, the day before Christmas Day," states the executive order he signed.

EPHRATA, PA — Five years ago, this annual Christmas column was written while our Fox News "War Stories" team was embedded with the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division south of Baghdad. A year earlier, the Christmas 2006 column was written in Ramadi, Iraq, while we were embedded with 1st Battalion, 6th Marines in what was then the bloodiest place on the planet. In 2005, this column originated with 3d Battalion, 7th Marines and the 2nd Brigade of the 28th Infantry Division, Pennsylvania National Guard, in Anbar Province. In the days before Christmas that year, we were able to document the...

John Kerry has written an op-ed for the Huffington Post comparing the inaction in response to a heating planet to the inaction of President Bush before September 11th. Kerry reaches deep into the bag of global warming hysterics to uncork this piece, saying that the fate of the nation hinges upon the passing of some sort of climate change legislation. It's ridiculously over the top, but we suppose it might get a few supporters all riled up and ready to fight for the bill this fall. Of course, it's so over the top that it might just turn off a bunch...

Northampton Township police arrested a Council Rock High School South student and seized two handguns from his bedroom after he allegedly threatened a shooting at the school. Police say the ninth-grader was taken into custody Thursday night after fellow students reported he made threatening statements. Detective Sgt. Bill Klein says two 9 mm handguns were in plain sight in the boy's bedroom when police went to his home. Klein says police treated the threat as credible from the start but weren't sure if the 14-year-old had the means to carry out an attack until searching the home. Investigators say it...

When National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre took the stage on Friday to address the media about last week’s elementary school massacre, he made it clear multiple times that the organization has issues with how the press reports on guns. At one point, LaPierre said “the media demonize lawful gun owners, amplify their cries for more laws and fill the national debate with misinformation and dishonest thinking.” If the NRA doesn’t like reporters, the feeling is apparently mutual. As Jeffrey Goldberg, a national correspondent for The Atlantic, put it: Reporters on my Twitter feed seem to hate the NRA more...

Young Black men are killing each other every day and the problem is particularly acute in urban cities like Chicago from which President Barack Obama hails. Yet, I haven’t seen Obama or the mainstream media shed a tear over the fact more than 50% of America’s murder victims are black and nearly all (85%) of those blacks killed are young men. Nor do we see media or presidential outrage or calls for more rigid gun control laws when young black kids are heinously murdered like we do when the victims are mostly white. Neither words nor God can explain the...

Parents and administrators' reactions are ranging from hesitation to anger over a proposal by the nation's largest gun-rights lobby to put an armed police officer in every school. Superintendent Hank Grishman of the Jericho, N.Y., schools on Long Island says he is outraged by the idea. He says putting more guns in schools won't make children safer, and could even put them in the line of more gunfire. Parent Helen Gym in Philadelphia believes the proposal is "extraordinarily opportunistic."

Recent observations prove revisions might be necessary for long support theory Data gathered by a team at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NSIT) suggest that certain aspects of the highly regarded quantum electrodynamics theory might require some revising.Observations made with the NSITÂ’s electron beam ion trap have led to questions regarding the accuracy of the quantum electrodynamics theory. What the group discovered, via the NSITÂ’s Electron Beam Ion Trap, is that ions with a strongly positive charge can display electrons that behave in ways inconsistent with what the theory suggests should happen. About the quantum electrodynamics theory The...

The formula for forecasting home sales used to include four key components; supply, demand, interest rates, and available mortgage money. With the election of Obama and his progressive onslaught upon the private sector, it becomes practically impossible to see 2013. Ad nausea you have been told that businesses don’t like uncertainty as the primary reason they aren’t hiring. That is true.Good news, businesses have certainty now that Obama has been reelected, they know for certain their taxes won’t be going down. They know Obamacare with its $1 trillion in new taxes will go forward. The bad news is the fiscal cliff...

  • New era in Russia-US trade relations: Obama scraps Jackson-Vanik amendment

    12/21/2012 10:40:31 AM PST · by Perdogg · 5 replies
President Obama has abolished the Jackson-Vanik amendment thus awarding Russia “permanent normal trade relations” status, which opens a new era in trade relations between the two countries. “The Russian Federation has been found to be in full compliance with the freedom of emigration requirement,” Obama proclaimed, adding that the articles of the 1974 law were no longer applicable to Russia. Jackson-Vanik affects trade by denying most favoured trading nation status to countries which unlawfully restrict emigration and violate other human rights. In particular it results in higher tariffs imposed on some goods and services and an outright ban on involvement...

It’s Christmas time and ‘tis the season to be jolly.  Yet, it’s also the season that tries men’s souls.  Many Christmases ago, my young daughter requested a doll and a baby carriage.  Making sure that Santa Claus found the correct toys was crucial because this just happened to be a last-minute request.  I called around and found that of all the stores that carried these items, only one store still had them in stock.  Apparently, these were very popular toys.  With minutes ticking by until closing, I flew to the store like the down of a thistle (with respects to...

Watch This UPS Driver Steal An iPad Mini And Get Caught Kevin SmithDecember 21, 2012 Earlier today a video leaked via Reddit of a UPS driver stealing a package from the front porch of a home. The package contained an iPad mini, a Christmas present for the homeowner's daughter. The package had been dropped off earlier by a FedEx delivery person but a UPS delivery guy came up, inspected the package and walked off with it. The act would have gone unpunished had the homeowner not installed a camera at his doorstep. The video has since been removed from YouTube...

Representative Stephen “Stat” Smith, 57, faces up to two years in prison, and prosecutors will recommend a 6-month sentence, according to his plea agreement. Smith has also agreed to vacate his seat, effective Jan. 1, and not seek elective office for five years from the date of his sentencing. A plea date has not been set. Maybe we need the 26.5% cut in Medicare. Maybe then docs would wake up out of their politically correct slumber and decide to actually once again devote themselves and their practices to their patients, instead of to political schemes, insurance and hospital collusive bureaucracy. Those docs who do not care can get a job with the hospital or government. Their patients will know who the docs are working for, and it is not always them. Others like me will continue the Osteopathic tradition of providing excellent care in an independent private practice setting where no one stands between me and...

The gentle spirit of Christmas brings a sense of fresh promise and renewal every year. The remembrances and commemorations of the birth of an innocent baby have a softening effect. Christmas provides a respite, even surcease, from the stresses, bruises, frictions, and pressures of everyday life. Indeed, this annual event reminds us that children are the hope of the world. They represent pure goodness—a clean slate, free of the learned baggage of mistrust and unkindness. They give us a glimpse of what life can be like without strife or animosity. They testify to the ideal of peace on earth....
