Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said that she and other gun control advocates are considering a law that would create a program to purchase weapons from gun owners, a proposal that could be compulsory. “We are also looking at a buy-back program,” Feinstein said today in a press conference. “Now, again, this is a work in progress so these are ideas in the development.”Gov. Andrew Cuomo, D-N.Y., already discussed the possibility of a buy-back law for his state, but he made clear it would be a forced buyback.“Confiscation could be an option,” Cuomo told The New York Times yesterday when discussing...

It's the Tea Party and thinking of the Tea Party and people like that that are driving the Republicans out of contention as a national party. You cannot win nationally if you don't know something about the way the country's changed, and the Tea Party seems to think the country can go back 25 or 30 years. This is the lower receiver of an AR-15 rifle, printed in fused plastic filament from a digital model that was, until this week, freely available for download on Thingiverse. This part is significant because all other parts of the common rifle can be readily purchased in the open market. A person who builds a working lower receiver has, in the eyes of the state, essentially built a working AR-15. It is legal to do so for personal use (at least under US law), but until lately the required tools, time, and talent put the project beyond the reach of most...

On the Monday after the Dec. 14 school massacre in Newtown, Conn., MPAA chairman-CEO Christopher Dodd telephoned the major Hollywood studio heads one by one. Violence in movies often comes under scrutiny following mass shootings, so Dodd wanted to touch base with his bosses, even though there was no indication that Adam Lanza's rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School was inspired by movies (he was an intense video gamer, however). The MPAA issued a statement pledging Hollywood's support in assisting President Obama's call for a special task force on gun violence. "Those of us in the motion picture and television...

Washington - Six months after the 1962 Chinese aggression on India, the US had contemplated using nuclear weapons in the event of another attack from Beijing as it was determined to prevent an Indian defeat at the hands of the Communists. The then president John F Kennedy, at a meeting with his top military aides on May 9, 1963, had expressed clear determination not to let Beijing defeat New Delhi, with his defence secretary even talking about using nuclear weapons against China if it launched another attack against India. We find plenty of reasons for some pretty deep-seated pessimism around here — certain Western democracies’ stubborn march into entirely self-inflicted rates of economic growth much less robust than what they could and should be figuring highly among those reasons — but all in all, I generally subscribe to the school of rational optimism. Sometimes (and I consider Christmas to be a perfect sometime), it’s rejuvenating to take a step back and remember that, while the beguiling promise of big government cyclically rears its ugly head, individuals are everyday responsible for free-market driven innovations and efficiencies that continually make the...

This March will mark three years since Obamacare became law, and it still has not had any serious effect on most Americans' lives. That's the way President Obama and the law's Democratic authors planned it; they conveniently pushed the dislocations and unhappy consequences of national health care well past their re-election campaigns. But Obamacare will be here soon, with an Oct. 1, 2013, start of enrollment in insurance exchanges and a Jan. 1, 2014, deadline for full implementation. The political results could be deeply painful for Democrats. During the campaign for Obamacare, President Obama pledged repeatedly that his health care...

While the shooting at Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School has prompted a national gun control debate, President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder will still push to allow immigrants to purchase firearms more easily. Normally, the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) requires legal aliens to live in a state for 90 days before buying a gun. The ATF does this through a rule attached to the Gun Control Act of 1968. In June, Holder’s DOJ proposed to eliminate that 90-day residency requirement rule. “This rule would finalize the interim final rule published on...

That´s not to say it´s excusable, just that the appalling neglect of 38 patients at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch is the logical result of the NHS´s untenable management structure. Imagine if everything at Tesco´s was free but rationed, and subject to delivery delays of several months. Then throw in the fact that there are no other free alternatives. Yet, there are those who argue that benefits of shale gas could be maximized if we restricted gas exports, mainly as liquefied natural gas (LNG). This would, it’s argued, keep prices low for U.S. consumers and manufacturers, contributing powerfully to the revival of American industry. Sounds convincing. The 62-year-old convicted felon had apparently set a trap, firing on the first responders from atop an earthen berm....

How About Banning Bullets? The Constitution Doesn't Say Anything About Those... Henry BlodgetDecember 24, 2012, 1:56 PM It's Time We Saw The Idea That Everyone Should Carry An Assault Weapon For What It Is: Nuts One of the arguments invoked by those who think we should keep assault weapons freely available in this country is that the Constitution says we have a right to own and buy them. The Constitution actually doesn't say anything of the sort. All the Constitution says is that we have the right to "bear arms." And that "right to bear arms" is actually supposed to...

Vatican newspaper compares marriage equality to communism Vatican City • Faced with recent setbacks in the United States and Europe, the Roman Catholic Church has intensified its increasingly uphill battle against gay marriage. The latest salvo came this week, with a front-page article in the Vatican’s semiofficial newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano. Historian Lucetta Scaraffia compared proponents of gay marriage, with their championing of “marriage equality,” to 20th-century communists who wooed millions with their promise of perfect social and economical equality. Scaraffia, a 64-year-old former feminist activist who later became a fervent Catholic, has often written in the Vatican newspaper on the...

United States firearm sales have sky-rocketed since the Newtown school massacre, as debate over gun control rages and enthusiasts fear certain assault weapons and high-capacity magazines could be banned. President Barack Obama basically has put gun enthusiasts on warning, Larry Hyatt, owner of a gun shop in Charlotte, North Carolina, told AFP, referring to efforts to outlaw certain weapons in the wake of the Newtown shooting. A semi-automatic Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifle was used in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in which a disturbed local young man shot dead 20 young children, six adults and his mother before taking...

Piers Morgan lashed out on Twitter today after a petition on the White House’s official website demanding his deportation blew past the 25,000 signature mark necessary to require an official response. The petition, now over 45,000 signatures, asks the White House to deport Morgan, a CNN host, for what it calls an attack on the second amendment. Morgan, who is British, has been an outspoken advocate for gun control in the aftermath of the Newtown shootings earlier this month. The petition calls his advocacy a “hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution,” and demands that he “be deported immediately for his...

Jewish Home chairman Naftali Bennett responded Monday night to the uproar created by comments he made last week regarding the expulsion of Jews from their homes. Referring to Netanyahu's campaign, Bennett told Channel 2 that "a national camp does not attack a national camp. It is completely unnecessary to play in the internal field. We have to take votes away from Livni." "This policy debate is fine," said Bennett, "but to get up in the morning and see a flood of anonymous personal negative ads is not right." "Netanyahu prefers to surround himself with weak parties who have no influence...

[. . .] Nationwide, at least 23,000 schools — about one-third of all public schools — already had armed security on staff as of the most recent data, for the 2009-10 school year, and a number of states and districts that do not use them have begun discussing the idea in recent days. . . Plus the NRA plan was much more comprehensive than just armed guards.

Every Christmas eve, you can count on several foreign correspondents in Israel to produce their annual bash-Israel-for-Christmas articles. These propaganda pieces usually focus on the plight of Palestinian Christians in Bethlehem, laying the blame on Israel for the dramatic decline (from perhaps 70 percent to under 25%) in the number of Christians in that city. Earlier this year, in April, CBS’s Bob Simon produced a masterpiece of mistruth on “60 Minutes” in which he indicted Israel's “occupation” and its security fence for the decline of the Christian population in the entire West Bank. Yesterday, the slam-Israel doozy of the year...

Gaza militants violated laws of war by launching hundreds of rockets at Israeli civilians during last month’s fighting, Human Rights Watch said in a release Monday. … “Palestinian armed groups made clear in their statements that harming civilians was their aim,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at the New York-based rights group. “There is simply no legal justification for launching rockets at populated areas.” …
