  • Faking It in Art and Politics

Here's a resolution for one and all as we slide down the fiscal cliff (or not): Beware of fakery in popular places. Fakery, particularly in the culture both high and low, bubbles up from the media, affecting the way we see everything -- even, for example, politics. Roger Scruton, the public philosopher and conservative commentator, writes in Aeon magazine, a provocative digital magazine of ideas and culture, how fake ideas, fake criticism and fake emotions have come to dominate public conversation and marginalize thoughtful appreciation of beauty, truth and honest debate. His initial concern is about the collusion of critics...

By Mr. Curmudgeon:Dr. H. Wayne Carver, a Connecticut medical examiner, asked University of Connecticut geneticists to examine the DNA of Adam Lanza, the alleged shooter in the Sandy Hill Elementary School massacre. According to ABC News, scientists "not directly involved in the study said they are likely looking at Lanza's DNA to detect a mutation or abnormality that could increase the risk of aggressive or violent behavior. They could analyze Lanza's entire genome in great detail and try to find unexpected mutations."The implication, of course, is that abnormalities found in Lanza's DNA may provide genetic red flags for nanny-state planners...

A 'gentle, well-respected' organist has died after being subjected to a brutal attack that left him with horrific head injuries. Grandfather Alan Greaves, 68, was on his way to Midnight Mass at St Saviour's CoE church in High Green, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, on Christmas Eve when he was set upon. He was found by a pizza delivery worker collapsed on the pavement outside a primary school just 300 metres from the church. He was rushed to hospital with severe head injuries and underwent a four-hour emergency operation but has since passed away. 'He was a good man and this was...

Exclusive: Phil Elmore insists gun-hating liberals 'want to murder you' The war has begun. The cultural war, the roiling but barely concealed “cold” war in which you have been enmeshed for years, has exploded into a full-fledged conflict. Where once the libs, the leftists, the Democrats in the United States were content to try to marginalize you – to define you through flawed “studies” and junk “science” as stupid, as uninformed, as less compassionate, as inferior – they are no longer satisfied with this cowardly tactic. People who say racial violence is “random” either do not know what the word means, or they are not telling the truth. The latest “random” attack – that wasn’t random – happened earlier this month in downtown Wilmington, N.C. Four black people decided they needed some money for marijuana and travel, so they decided to look for a “white person in a good neighborhood (because) they’re bound to have money lying around,” said one of the suspected killers to the Wilmington Star News. They tried to break into a home but ran away after they discovered someone was there. So...

Organization often played legal hardball against accusers in molestation cases, say attorneys and families. When a lawsuit alleged that two young brothers in Michigan had been molested “hundreds of times” by a troop leader, the Boy Scouts denied responsibility and pointed the finger at someone else — the boys' recently widowed mother. The Scouts faulted the woman “for her failure to provide adequate parental supervision,” suggesting in court papers that she was responsible for any harm to her sons. One of the boys' lawyers called that argument excessive. “The day their dad died, the perpetrator began to befriend the boys,”...

The reason President Obama and Republicans can't come to an agreement on the fiscal cliff negotiations is that they don't share the same goals. This is also the key to understanding why President Obama appears far less worried about going over the cliff. Republicans are focused on restoring the nation's financial health by promoting economic growth and reducing our horrendous deficits and debt. President Obama's primary aim is to complete his project of fundamentally transforming America. I ask you loyal Democrats to please consider these things. President Obama's decision to nominate Senator John Kerry as his next secretary of state will prove to be a disaster for Israel. The choice of the American Jewish establishment to vehemently protest the expected nomination of former Senator Chuck Hagel while granting Kerry a free pass for his anti-Israel behavior follows a longtime pattern. Hagel is a Republican who has a history of marking foolish remarks regarding Israel and has long been seen as an independent thinker on Middle East policy with a non-interventionist outlook. It was “like I was a dog with a collar on,” Aubrey Ireland, a 21-year-old student at the University of Cincinnati, told an Oct. 9 court hearing, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. According to a judge’s ruling this month, Julie and David Ireland must stay at least 150 metres from their daughter at all times and could face criminal charges if they have any contact with...

Government By Fiat: Quietly, on Christmas Eve while no one was looking, President Obama unveiled his regulatory plans for the coming year. Why all the secrecy? What's he got to hide? Plenty, it seems. By law, Obama was supposed to issue his regulatory plans last April. But, as with so many other things, he simply ignores the laws he finds inconvenient. Who's to stop him? Even the Associated Press has noticed: "Since the election, the Obama administration has quietly reopened the regulations pipeline" on everything from "workplace safety to a crackdown on Wall Street," the news service wrote last week....

There is good news and bad news about climate. The good news is that science evidence has made it quite clear that the human contribution to a possible global warming is minor; in fact it cannot even be... --snip-- Important news: The Chinese Academy of Sciences has translated these NIPCC reports for publication in 2013 -- the first national academy to do so. The other good news is that the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which has been slowly dying since the UN conference in Copenhagen in Dec. 2009, is finally going to be officially buried this month, in December 2012. --snip--...

Cuba's drive to slash state payrolls and spur private-sector growth picked up surprising steam in 2012 as President Raul Castro moved ahead with reforms to the Soviet-style economy, according to figures unveiled recently with little hoopla. The number of private or "non state" workers rose 23 percent in 2012, while state sector employment dropped 5.7 percent, according to a report from (Economy) Minister Adel Yzquierdo Rodriguez. The unemployment rate grew to a record 3.8 percent, not including Cubans who did not seek work. [snip] Just a few years ago, the state employed more than 85 percent of Cuba's labor force,...
  • Ordinary folks losing faith in stocks

Andrew Neitlich is the last person you’d expect to be rattled by the stock market. He once worked as a financial analyst picking stocks for a mutual fund. He has huddled with dozens of CEOs in his current career as an executive coach. During the dot-com crash 12 years ago, he kept his wits and did not sell. But he’s selling now. “You have to trust your government. You have to trust other governments. You have to trust Wall Street,” says Neitlich, 47. “And I don’t trust any of these.” Defying decades of investment history, ordinary Americans are selling stocks...

Is life like a pizza, where if some people have too many slices, other people have to eat the pizza box? Given that hypocrisy is an important part of diplomacy, and diplomacy is necessary to foreign policy, allow me to congratulate you on winning a second term. I wish I could also congratulate you on your conduct of international affairs. I do thank you for killing Osama bin Laden. It was a creditable action for which you deserve some of the credit you've been given. Of course the intelligence was gathered, and the mission was undertaken, by men and women...

Two Arizona sheriffs have ideas on how to protect schools, and their plans are far from the same. Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio wants to use his posse. Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu wants to arm willing principals. Sheriff Arpaio said his plan is similar to the posse he started in 1993 to patrol area malls. Arpaio said his posse members have more than 100 hours of firearms training and will probably carry Glock handguns.

The U.S. Treasury Department will begin taking steps on Friday to delay hitting the government's $16.4 trillion borrowing limit on Dec. 31. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said in a letter Wednesday to congressional leaders that the department will use accounting measures to save approximately $200 billion. That could keep the government from reaching the limit for about two months. … For now, Treasury will take several steps to delay reaching the limit. Geithner said it will stop selling Treasury securities used by state and local governments to support their own sales of tax-exempt bonds. That will keep the department from...

The leading U.S. pro-gun group, the National Rifle Association, has vowed to fight a draft international treaty to regulate the $70 billion global arms trade and dismissed suggestions that a recent U.S. school shooting bolstered the case for such a pact. The U.N. General Assembly voted on Monday to restart negotiations in mid-March on the first international treaty to regulate conventional arms trade after a drafting conference in July collapsed because the U.S. and other nations wanted more time. Washington supported Monday's U.N. vote. U.S. President Barack Obama has come under intense pressure to tighten domestic gun control laws after...
