Time Magazine has just named President Obama as their Person of the Year. This has been, of course, controversial, and for the usual reasons: much like with the President’s Nobel Peace Prize, one has to wonder what he actually did to deserve it. Surely getting reelected is important, but beside the point; what matters is what you do in office, and I just don’t see much in the way of achievement by the President this year, in which he spent most of it either campaigning or doing nothing to avoid rocking the boat before the election. But Person of the...
  • UK “faces 50/50 risk of suffering triple-dip recession” say economists as they warn of eurozone risk

    Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 19:50 EST, 31 December 2012 | Hugo Duncan
There is a 50/50 chance that Britain will slide into a devastating triple-dip recession this year, leading economists warn today. Output “probably” fell in the final three months of 2012 and could do so again in the first three months of 2013, said the Center for Economics and Business Research. Another two quarters of decline in a row would mean the third recession in five years and set the scene for another bleak year. The think-tank singled out the crisis in the eurozone as “a major challenge for the UK economy”, given it is Britain’s biggest trading partner. …

Several Republicans took to the House floor Tuesday afternoon to slam the Senate-brokered "fiscal cliff" bill that was passed earlier in the morning, calling it a rush job that raises taxes and delays most of the spending cuts planned for this year. "So we find ourselves again with a bill that reflects not financial wisdom, but the seductive spirit that pervades this town," Rep. Scott Rigell (R-Va.) said. "Leaders in Washington continue to over-promise. They're likes salespeople who tell their customer they can have an $30,000 car but only pay $18,000 for it. Who doesn't like that deal?" Rep. Louie...
  • Britain should be offered “second class” membership of the EU

Britain should cease to be a full member of the European Union under a new deal that would focus on trade, according to senior Brussels politicians. An umbrella group of 20 organizations campaigning for a federal Europe suggested Britain should be offered “associate membership” of the EU to prevent the country leaving altogether.David Cameron is seen as the “continual impediment” to a closer integration of eurozone states, according to the Union of European Federalists. The plan would see the UK lose all its MEPs, its commissioner in Brussels and its right to veto decisions in the European Council, but remain...

Say Yes to the Mess 12:15 PM, JAN 1, 2013 • BY WILLIAM KRISTOL The fiscal cliff deal that the Senate passed early this morning is ridiculous in too many ways to count. There seem to be no figures from the Congressional Budget Office and only "very preliminary" figures from the Joint Tax Committee about the real spending and revenue implications. The two month delay of the sequester will make actual governance even more difficult (how is the Pentagon supposed to plan for the rest of the year?). The sequester delay is funded by a gimmick with retirement savings tax...

  • Fracking Fiction - Promised Land pulls a fast one on moviegoers.

A word of warning: It’s impossible to review Promised Land, the new movie written by Matt Damon and John Krasinski and directed by Gus Van Sant, without giving away its twist ending. Though the plot turn is fumbling in its execution, it is the slyest tactic in the movie’s clumsy crusade against fracking, the process of injecting high-pressure chemicals, water, and sand into the ground to access vast quantities of otherwise inaccessible natural gas. Here’s the premise: Steve Butler (Damon) is a corporate salesman who draws on his rural roots to persuade farmers to sell their land to a fracking...

Rita Levi-Montalcini, a biologist who conducted underground research in defiance of Fascist persecution and went on to win a Nobel Prize for helping unlock the mysteries of the cell, died at her home in Rome on Sunday, Dec. 30. She was 103 and had worked well into her final years. Rome Mayor Gianni Alemanno, announcing her death in a statement, called it a great loss "for all of humanity." He praised her as someone who represented "civic conscience, culture and the spirit of research of our time." Italy's so-called "Lady of the Cells," a Jew who lived through anti-Semitic discrimination...
  • Here come the crazies (Cuomo, Obama, to release more mental patients)

The Cuomo administration is preparing to shove thousands of mentally ill New Yorkers out of supervised settings — where they can be forced to take their medication — into far less restrictive, far more dangerous “community housing.” Albany, under pressure from the Obama administration, recently ordered psychiatric facilities not to place any discharged patients in adult homes, where staff can ensure they take their meds. Instead, they’ll be placed in “community housing,” without full-time supervision. This is part of the state’s plan to essentially empty adult homes into community-based “supportive” apartments, leaving up to 6,000 people — including those with...

The White House issued a "fact sheet" statement Tuesday declaring the fiscal cliff agreement a victory, though the House has yet to vote on the measure. "At this make or break moment for the middle class, the President achieved a bipartisan solution that keeps income taxes low for the middle class and grows the economy," the statement says. "For the first time in 20 years, Congress will have acted on a bipartisan basis to vote for significant new revenue.

It's hard to rundown all the spending/tax hike ramifications since they passed the damn thing at 2am on New Years Day but the politics of the deal are quite clear. WH tells colleague Ed Henry Obama broke R's tax pledge. Calls it "1 of the most consequential policy achievements of the last couple decades And what did the GOP get for this? Nothing. I doubt the House GOP has the stones to decline this invitation to sign their own death warrant. But don't worry guys...we'll get those spending cuts in the debt ceiling deal! This was the key surrender that...

Apparently we are making up for last years lack of snow. Today we had a record snowfall of 2.2 inches which puts us at 10.6 inches for December. After our big storm Wednesday and our snowfall this morning we’ve already seen more snow than we did last year. This morning accumulations varied with a few spots in Mercer county picking up five additional inches while most locations saw about 2 to 3 inches. Here’s a look at Live Doppler 2HD’s snowfall accumulation. Official National Weather Service amounts can be found by clicking here.

David Daniel, an east Texas landowner, was so determined to block the Keystone XL pipeline from coming through his forest that he built an elaborate network of treehouses eight stories above the ground. It popped into my head a long time ago, actually," says 45-year-old David Daniel. "If I had to climb my butt on top of a tree and sit there, I would. It started with that." ...Staging A Tree-sit For 80 days, a couple dozen protesters took turns living up in Daniel's treehouses. Some wore masks to hide their identities. What's this? Joe Biden in weekend conversation with Mitch McConnell over how to step back from the fiscal cliff? Isn't Biden the man in charge of solving The Gun Problem? How does he have the time or energy -- not least the ideas -- to launch another rescue mission? Apparently he had none of these. Not much came, reportedly, of the Biden-McConnell negotiations. One is struck anyway by an infinitely larger question -- how did we as a society, as a nation, get to this point: wrapped in suspense while the government of the United States works out, or tries...

There’s no official agreement, so everything you read here may turn out to be nonsense, but it appears that the misfits in Washington have reached a deal on the fiscal cliff. It seems as though my prediction about the outcome was correct. Not that this makes me happy.First, the good news.………Oh, wait, there isn’t any.Now for the bad news. The top tax rate will increase to 39.6 percent for entrepreneurs, investors, small business owners, and other “rich” taxpayers making more than $400,000 ($450,000 for married couples). This is Obama’s big victory. He gets his class-warfare trophy. The double tax on dividends and...

After an election year in which legislative business practically ground to a halt, Congress is poised to make up for lost time in 2013. The new Congress will begin its next session with an agenda expected to focus largely on issues that re-emerged over the past several weeks and months, with gun legislation and immigration reform near the top. Though fiscal issues will remain a priority, how much work lawmakers put into them depends on whether, or to what extent, President Obama and congressional Republicans resolve the fiscal crisis in the closing days of this session. A basic deal to...
