He told reporters before a Wednesday meeting with gun violence victims and gun control groups that Obama will not let Republican resistance prevent action. "The president is going to act. There are executives orders, there's executive action that can be taken," Biden said. "We haven't decided what that is...

CHAPIN, SC (WIS) - At least one parent calls the actions of a Chapin High School English teacher disrespectful and unpatriotic. When Michael Copeland overheard his teenager talking about what her honors II English teacher did with the flag in their classroom, he pressed for details. "He drew a couple of symbols, like one of them was a cross, and he said, 'What does this represent,' and everybody said, 'Christianity,'" said Copeland. "Then he proceeds to...

The White House just realized it had to at least pretend to listen to America’s 100 million gun owners. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. invited a representative from the National Rifle Association (NRA) to attend a White House meeting with anti-gun groups scheduled to take place Thursday. Up to now, gun owners have been left out of President Obama's task force seeking “solutions” to gun violence by the end of the month. The simultaneous high-profile media blitz is meant to ready the public for radical limits on the Second Amendment. New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg appears to...

( - The gun control policies of the post-Gaddafi government in Libya delayed the arming of bodyguards for U.S. diplomats in that country and left the local guard force hired to watch over the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi unarmed, according to internal State Department memos and written testimony by the State Department officer who was in charge of the department’s security in Libya until six weeks before the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attacks. “Our long term security plan in Libya was to recruit and deploy an armed, locally hired Libyan bodyguard unit,” State Department Regional Security Officer Eric Nordstrom...

  • How to stop school shootings right now: Abolish pretend “gun-free zones”

Real gun-free zones (enforced by metal detectors backed up by armed security guards) are fine for certain buildings. Pretend gun-free zones (bans on gun carrying by licensed people, but no procedures to keep out criminal gun carriers, and exacerbated by the absence of armed security) are magnets for mass killers. There is a reason why mass killers frequently attack schools, movie theaters, or shopping malls which are pretend gun-free zones. My article Pretend “Gun-free” School Zones: A Deadly Legal Fiction, 42 Connecticut Law Review 515 (2009), examines the policy arguments. The article details some (but far from all) of the...

One of the greatest beneficiaries of the unrest in Egypt has been the Muslim Brotherhood. Banned but tolerated for decades by successive Egyptian regimes, the Islamist movement is now emerging as a central player in the country’s resurgent opposition. On Tuesday, two Brotherhood representatives participated in an opposition delegation that met with Vice President Omar Suleiman for the first set of talks over implementing political reforms. Elections have consequences. One of them is continuing US support for the European Project and the process of ‘ever closer union’, following Barack Obama’s re-election last November. Had Mitt Romney won, there would have been a very different approach towards the EU, with a far greater emphasis upon advancing ties with nation states in Europe as opposed to currying favour with Brussels. Romney’s approach was distinctly Eurosceptic, with frequent warnings against America ending up like Europe, with its big government, high tax approach. As David Blair has reported, Philip Gordon, the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian...

Sheriff Scott Berry, of Oconee County, Georgia, may or may not be affiliated with the Oath Keepers (active duty and retired military and law enforcement personnel who have taken an oath to disobey unconstitutional orders, with orders to disarm the American people listed first). Whether officially a member of Oath Keepers or not, a recent decision of his makes it clear that he embodies the same noble principles that drive that group. Sheriff Berry, upon discovering that a local supplier of firearms and law enforcement gear would no longer sell semi-automatic rifles to non-law enforcement personnel, announced that his department...
