French fighter jets struck deep inside Islamist strongholds in northern Mali on Sunday, shoving aside months of international hesitation about storming the region after every other effort by the United States and its allies to thwart the extremists had failed. For years, the United States tried to stem the spread of Islamic militancy in the region by conducting its most ambitious counterterrorism program ever across these vast, turbulent stretches of the Sahara. But as insurgents swept through the desert last year, commanders of this nation’s elite army units, the fruit of years of careful American training, defected when they were...

Iran successfully has built a nuclear bomb with the help of Russia and North Korea and has enough weapons-grade uranium and plutonium for more, according to a source in the Revolutionary Guards intelligence unit. The source, who has access to Iran’s nuclear program, said the Islamic regime is working out of seven nuclear sites, most unknown to the IAEA, and that its nuclear bomb program is complete. North Korea has provided the regime with plutonium for nuclear warheads, the source verified, and the last obstacle to overcome is arming missiles with those warheads. …

An Arizona county is considering a plan to remove the metal detector at its administration building and allow people to freely carry guns at the location as they carry out government business. Mohave County added the walk-through metal detector and gun lockers a few years ago, subjecting people to security and forcing them to stow their guns before entering the building. But the county is now exploring an idea to let people carry guns in the building.

Kenya's president rejected on Saturday plans by members of parliament to triple their end-of-term bonuses and award themselves diplomatic passports, bodyguards for life and state funerals. In their last act before parliament closed for March 4 elections, Kenyan lawmakers, already among the best paid in the world, tried for a second time in a few months to increase their end-term bonus to 9.3 million shillings ($107,200) each. President Mwai Kibaki struck down their first attempt last October and, amid public outrage at what one newspaper called the lawmakers' "eccentric greed", he again declined to sign the bill, saying it was...

Colin Powell is NOT a Republican. If a chicken calls itself a cow, is the chicken a cow? Of course not. Powell appeared on “Meet the Press” with David Gregory on Sunday and sounded like he just attended the Nancy Pelosi Summit of Anti-Conservative Talking Points and Race Baiting. Powell referenced Sarah Palin and John Sununu, two conservative patriots, as being racist. He said Palin’s use of the phrase “shuckin’ and jivin” is racist. He said Sununu’s description of the President as “lazy” is racist. I am half-tempted to check out my local library to see if it has a...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Air Force leaders will cut flying hours by nearly 20 percent and prepare for a possible end to all noncombat or noncritical flights from late July through September if Congress can't agree on a budget and billions of dollars in automatic cuts are triggered.
-
Washington – The Pentagon will begin taking steps to freeze civilian hiring, delay some contract awards and curtail some maintenance to prepare for drastic budget cuts if Congress can't reach an agreement on a final spending plan, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday.

Could Sweden or Finland be the scene of the next European financial crisis? It is actually far likelier than most people realize. While the world has been laser-focused on the woes of the heavily-indebted PIIGS nations for the last couple of years, property markets in Northern and Western European countries have been bubbling up to dizzying new heights in a repeat performance of the very property bubbles that caused the global financial crisis in the first place.
-
The announcement that the Pentagon would scale back defense contracting amid massive budget cuts was unsettling but expected news for some contractors who have already left the industry amid the uncertainty that has loomed over them for nearly 18 months.

Rock legend and gun-rights activist Ted Nugent took the Obama administration to task Sunday evening for pledging to make gun control a priority, telling a radio host the president’s plans are practically “psychotic.” “A person who lives by logic and studies history and tries to implement the lessons learned by history cannot begin to rationally explain the conduct of this president or his attorney general or this administration,” Nugent said. “It is psychotic, it is crazy, it is illogical.” Nugent was speaking to Aaron Klein of New York WABC Radio’s “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio.” Nugent explained that many people have...

Chuck Hagel hates Jews. Or should I say, he hates Jews who think that Jews have rights and that their rights should be defended, in Israel by the government and the IDF, in America by Israel's supporters. As I mentioned before, it is not at all surprising that Obama appointed Hagel, and I see little chance that the Senate will reject his appointment. Israel and its American friends however can take heart that Israel will not be Hagel's chief concern. Hagel -- and Obama -- have bigger fish to fry than Israel. They are looking to take on the US...

Britain cannot possibly afford its welfare state for much longer. Most people do not realize that state handouts (Ł207 billion [$334 billion] a year) mop up every penny we pay in income tax (Ł155 billion [$250 billion] a year). Everything else, the NHS, schools, transport, police, defense, interest on the debt (nearly Ł50 billion [$80.7 billion] a year, by the way) must be paid for by other taxes, including the vast sums raked in by so-called “National Insurance”, or by more borrowing. As we are more or less bankrupt as a country, such generosity is not noble, but plain idiotic. Yet...

Their father is a Harris County Precinct 1 deputy constable, and the boy knew what he had to do to keep himself and his sister alive. Around 2:30 PM, two men tried to break in, with one going through the front door and the other in the back. The boy grabbed the AR-15 and shot at them. The two later showed up at a Tomball hospital. The adult was hit three times and...

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is convening an emergency meeting Monday of his cabinet and others from the Supreme National Security Council over WND’s revelation of the Islamic regime’s secret nuclear facility. The exclusive WND report on Jan. 7 said the secret facility is in Khondab near the city of Arak in central Iran. According to a source in the Revolutionary Guards intelligence unit with access to Iran’s nuclear program, Iran is scrambling to find out who leaked the information. In 1991, a man named George Hennard drove his truck through the front of a Luby's Cafateria in Killeen, Texas. It wasn't an accident. He hadn't lost control of his vehicle but instead was there to kill. After crashing into the restaurant, Hennard jumped out and started killing as many people as he could. Thank goodness government is getting more involved in health care so we can finally put a stop to sick and injured people using too many painkillers. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced this week that the city is going to sharply restrict supplies of painkillers at the city’s emergency rooms to combat a rampant addiction problem. At the time of his suicide, Aaron Swartz was preparing for a crucial hearing in his federal criminal case, likely his best chance to thwart federal prosecutors who had developed solid evidence against the Internet activist who was facing an April trial on a 13-count felony indictment. The 26-year-old Swartz, who killed himself Friday in his Brooklyn apartment, was scheduled for a January 25 evidentiary hearing in U.S. District Court in Boston, Massachusetts. Lawyers for Swartz were seeking to suppress material gathered in connection with Swartz’s breach of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology computer network. The January 2011 incursion netted...

Citi Reveals The Most Likely Debt Ceiling Endgame, And Why It's Bad News For The US Dollar Joe WeisenthalJanuary 13, 2013CitiFX guru Steven Englander has a new note out this evening titled: No coin + temporary debt ceiling extension + sequester = USD negative. In it he notes that the rejection of the trillion dollar coin idea to avert the debt ceiling is not alone a market moving event, but that the hard language taken by the White House that the choices boil down to clean lift or default raises the odds of a debt ceiling breach. His take: So...

Anyone who uses the term "fair share" when writing or talking about government revenues should be required to take a physical. We need to discover if they are indeed alive. One can see them figuratively as zombies shuffling down the street, driven by an unquenchable appetite to eat the rich. Instead of growling, they keep repeating "fair share, fair share." Their brains are no longer alive, but they are automated nevertheless by a virus spread by political demagogues who gain power by creating social class enmity and propagating greed. The ironies inherent in the "fair share" demagogues are delicious, if...

Hundreds of thousands of Iranians with serious illnesses have been put at imminent risk by the international sanctions, due to dire shortages of life-saving medicines such as chemotherapy drugs for cancer and bloodclotting agents for haemophiliacs. Western governments have built waivers into the sanctions regime in an effort to ensure that essential medicines get through, but those waivers conflict with blanket restrictions on banking, as well as bans on "dual-use" chemicals which might have a military application. "Sometimes companies agree to sell us drugs but we have no way of paying them. On one occasion, our money was in the...

WASHINGTON -- Retired Gen. Colin Powell offered a vigorous defense of Chuck Hagel’s nomination as the next Defense secretary, even as the top Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee added questions about Hagel’s temperament to lawmakers’ other concerns about the nominee, particularly his position on Israel. Powell, former secretary of State to President George W. Bush and a widely respected member of the GOP, had voiced strong support for Hagel shortly after President Obama named the former Nebraska senator as his choice to replace Leon E. Panetta. On Sunday, Powell spelled out further why he regards Hagel as “superbly...

Two ventures aiming to break the logjam facing Western Canadian producers seeking new markets for their crude oil face crucial tests in January. Vancouver-based Generating for Seven Generations, or G7G, is expecting to know whether it will get C$40 million in financing to study the feasibility of its plan to build a rail line from Alberta to Alaska to connect with the Valdez Marine Terminal, while a coalition of railroads and producers is scheduled to decide whether it will conduct an experimental shipment of 2 million barrels of crude this summer through the Hudson Bay port at Churchill, Manitoba, to...

Nate Silver, the New York Times’ FiveThirtyEight blogger and statistician who rose to prominence accurately predicting sports and elections, has run the numbers and has come to a conclusion: The Seahawks, he predicts, will play in the Super Bowl. There, they’ll take on the New England Patriots, Silver thinks. And while the Seahawks may not be the second-best team in the NFL — Silver says that’s probably the Denver Broncos — they may just be the best team in the NFC. “There’s always uncertainty with any metric,” Silver told ESPN’s “First Take.” “I do think with a Seattle team that...

On gun control, immigration, and Hagel, the president's biggest roadblocks are Democrats. The White House’s ambitious agenda on gun control, immigration reform, and, perhaps, even climate change is a sign that President Obama believes he locked up precious political capital with his reelection and intends to spend it quickly. But that isn’t welcome news to many of the Democrats who need him the most in the short term--the seven Democratic senators in conservative states facing tough reelection bids. Just one week into the new year, Obama has already hit some unpleasant stumbling blocks with his own party. On gun control,...

We’ve spent plenty of time covering the litany of complaints being raised against Chuck Hagel’s nomination for SecDef based on various policy positions he’s taken or past comments he’s made. But now a different and less discussed – though already well known – aspect of his past is bubbling back to the surface. During the round of Sunday morning shows, Senator Bob Corker weighed in, asking whether Hagel has the proper temperament for an upper level management position. Raising concerns about former Sen. Chuck Hagel’s nomination as defense secretary, Sen. Bob Corker said Sunday the former Nebraska senator’s temperament should...

A controversial gun sale caused a traffic jam on the Berlin Turnpike in Newington well before 9 a.m. as people stood in line outside Hoffman's Gun Shop hoping to get their hands on a semi-automatic rifle value bundle. Hoffman's Gun Center & Indoor Shooting Range was selling only 100 of the Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport value packs, and that had people lined up in droves. The gun itself has been the target of a lot of controversy, and many lawmakers are looking to ban it and other semi-automatic rifles. But it's what came in addition to the rifle that...

WASHINGTON - The prospect of the American economy careening off a cliff overshadowed a tax increase that takes effect immediately, rich or not. Even with the deal on Capitol Hill, the so-called payroll tax is scheduled to bounce back up to 6.2 percent from 4.2 percent in 2011 and 2012. In practical terms, this amounts to a $1,000 tax increase for someone earning $50,000 a year and a $2,200 tax increase for someone earning $150,000. Even workers taking home less than $20,000 annually will be impacted, paying roughly $100 more. "I think it will have a negative effect," says Neil...

Conservatives simply have no one in the media that has any credibility with the ill-informed masses. It does not have Ronald Reagan waiting in the winds to blast these frauds and hypocrites for the outrages against decent, hard-working Americans. How many times have you tried to have a serious conversation about current events only to have your listeners say, "I'm not interested in politics"? These are the low-info voters that the Republicans have never been able to communicate with but the Democrats know exactly how to reach them. That is why they concentrate their connections in the mainstream media and...

Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan has been sacked after the newspaper conceded photos of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi were fake. The internet has literally been littered with news reports about a new propaganda campaign being waged by the head of the Council on American Islamic Relations’ (CAIR) Chicago director. The man’s name is Ahmed Rehab and his methodology has been to run advertising on buses to change the public perception of the word “Jihad.” Rehab has chosen two of the most liberal cities in America in which to conduct his campaign so far: Chicago and San Francisco. The name of the campaign is “MyJihad” and it aims to convince Americans that Jihad only means “to struggle” or, more specifically, an...

Views on Gay People Shift in Singapore By Megan Gannon Americans' views about gay people have shifted dramatically in the past few decades. For instance, a Gallup poll last month showed that support for same-sex marriage in the United States stands at 53 percent — still a polarizing figure, but about double what it was in 1996. New research shows that positive attitudes toward homosexuals are becoming more common in other countries, too, like Singapore, where the increasing visibility of gay people seems to be helping to move the needle. A nationally representative survey in the Southeast Asian city-state found...

In the so-called Gunshine State, home to the most gun permits in the country, firearm violence has fallen to the lowest point on record. As state and national legislators consider gun control laws in the wake of last month's Connecticut school shooting, Florida finds itself in a gun violence depression. The Firearm-involved violent crime rate has dropped 33 percent between 2007 and 2011, while the number of issued concealed weapons permits rose nearly 90 percent during that time, state records show. "We're happy to have facts and statistics put into these debates, because every time they do, we win," said...
