  • Obama vows to 'vigorously pursue' gun control, prepares to release proposals

President Obama says he plans to make public later this week the details of his plan to tighten firearms laws based on the findings of a White House task force he commissioned in the aftermath of the fatal Connecticut school shooting. The task force was led by Vice President Joe Biden and held its final White House meeting Monday, talking with members of the House Democratic Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. Obama said Monday he planned to meet with Biden to review the findings and will “vigorously pursue” the recommendations in the next few days.

A US senator has accused the Obama administration and the Justice Department for not being “adequately forthcoming” with information on the targeting and potential killing of Americans suspected of terrorism. Ron Wyden, the Democratic senator from Oregon and a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, wrote an open letter to John Brennan, the frontrunner for the post of Director of the CIA, asking Brennan to provide Congress with the secret legal opinions defining the government’s capacity to pursue and kill US citizens suspected of involvement in terrorist activities. Republicans, and many Democrats, are upset by the prospect of so-called sequestration cuts to the nation's defense budget. Pentagon chief Leon Panetta is so alarmed that the day before the Senate took up what became the "fiscal cliff" agreement, he called a key Republican lawmaker, Sen. Lindsey Graham, to express deep concern that the cuts might go into effect. As it turned out, Congress put them off for two months. Sequestration would force the government to reduce discretionary spending by about $1.2 trillion over the next decade. Roughly half of that, or $600 billion, would come from defense --...

ALBANY (CBSNewYork) – The New York State Legislature was poised Monday night to pass the first gun control measure following the Newtown school massacre. This as the vice president was set to unveil federal proposals to end gun violence on Tuesday. Albany lawmakers have reportedly ironed out the kinks, allowing them to enact new gun control measures in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting. Assuming the new bill passes — it was sent to both house of the Legislature on Monday night — it will turn into the toughest set of gun control laws in the...

We have once again reached the debt limit and most legislators want to blast right through as usual. Obama says he doesn’t even want to discuss it. Those who want some spending cuts are threatening to block continued spending unless there are real cuts. That brings us to two ploys that are being considered by the big spenders. First, some are saying the President doesn’t need Congress for spending authority. They say the 14th Amendment would allow Obama to spend without regard to the limit, even though the constitutions says all spending must be authorized by Congress. Second, some say...

Where is Mali? It’s in West Africa, at the crossroads between the harsh Sahara desert and the more fertile lands to the south. The northern half of the country is bleak and arid terrain, dotted with several oasis towns, including the fabled town of Timbuktu. What is its geopolitical significance? Until recently, Mali seemed to have little geopolitical value. But its north has emerged as a haven for Islamist radicals who originally crossed the border from Algeria and then became a kidnapping threat in West Africa. One radical group, affiliated with al-Qaeda, became financially powerful from kidnappings and trafficking operations....

On Saturday, the Minister Louis Farrakhan began a 52-week sermon series entitled, “The Time and What Must Be Done.” Originally announced in early January, the lecture series will air every Saturday at 6 p.m. CT. Intended to educate African Americans about building a better future and taking control of their destiny, it also has some seriously-apocalyptic undertones. For example — and like past sermons — Farrakhan’s introductory message had no shortage of anti-American sentiment, calling U.S. citizens “a savage people” while dismissing the country’s current culture as “wild, untamed, uncivilized, uncultured [and] unrefined.” America, he claimed, is referred to in...

With the NRA’s call for an armed police officer in every school, a debate has erupted over cost of such a strategy, but there is a much more efficient and inexpensive path to secure schools. For some reason the teachers’ unions, politicians, and school administrators think that teachers are somehow less responsible, less capable, and less trainable than those who choose a career in law enforcement, and that having anyone with access to a gun in school besides a uniformed police officer would interfere with children’s ability to learn. The renewed debate over gun rights that has followed the massacre of elementary schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., has included scrutiny over why gun advocates believe they need a right to bear arms. If government goes too far, the argument goes, Americans have the right to revolt by force. Is that argument correct? Or does it belong to fringe gun enthusiasts?

Judge Recio sentenced them to time served but they are now facing deportation. The group makes up a total of 16 Albanian immigrants caught in Brownsville since late December. Border Patrol statistics show only 38 immigrants from the southeast European nation were arrested along the entire southwest border in 2011.

A friend of mine from Pennsylvania called me today to tell me of her visit to a local WalMart, where she patronizes a bank located within this Walmart. It was Woodforest Bank. She slowly got incensed having to watch Candy Crowley on the omnipresent CNN,while waiting in line, and decided to do something about it. She started a conversation, which went on quite a while, with a trucker standing in front of her who as it turned out was a classic Low Information Voter, and kept trying to defend Obama, who he knew not surprisingly anything about. This got her more...

Real estate developer Rodney Lockwood Jr. agrees with Detroit politicians that Belle Isle is a jewel. A tarnished jewel he likes so much that he wants to put together an investor group to buy it for $1 billion, which is more than $1 million an acre for the 982-acre park in the middle of the Detroit River. And then he wants to polish it up with $20 billion in construction projects on the island, which would lead to another $20 billion in construction projects off the island and tens of thousands of temporary construction jobs and tens of thousands of...
  • Shale Gas Will Fuel a U.S. Manufacturing Boom

Chemical producers abandoned the U.S. in droves. Cheap natural gas is luring them back. People predicting a manufacturing renaissance in the United States usually imagine whirring robots or advanced factories turning out wind turbines and solar panels. The real American edge might be in something entirely more mundane: cheap starting materials for plastic bottles and plastic bags. The plummeting price of natural gas, which can be used to make a vast number of products, including tires, carpet, antifreeze, lubricants, cloth, and many types of plastic, is luring key industries to the United States. Just five years ago, natural gas prices...

List of IRS Forms that 1040 filers can begin filing in late February or early March 2013January 11, 2013 Late on January 1, 2013, Congress passed HR 8 (Tax Relief Extension Act) which extended almost all of the Federal tax provisions that had expired at the end of 2011 and 2012. The IRS announced on January 9th that they will not accept electronic or paper returns before January 30, 2013, a delay from the original January 22nd beginning date. This is necessary to allow them time to reprogram their systems to comply with the changes included in the Tax Relief...

There is no question that liberals do an impressive job of expressing concern for blacks. But do the intentions expressed in their words match the actual consequences of their deeds? San Francisco is a classic example of a city unexcelled in its liberalism. But the black population of San Francisco today is less than half of what it was back in 1970, even though the city's total population has grown. Severe restrictions on building housing in San Francisco have driven rents and home prices so high that blacks and other people with low or moderate incomes have been driven out...

The sane reaction to the Sandy Hook shooting might have been to look at the country’s mental illness infrastructure. The shooter in the case was clearly sick, and mental illness is the common denominator among these mass shootings, after all, from Newtown to Tucson to Aurora to Virginia Tech and beyond. Instead, look at what we’re doing. The White House and many in Congress have targeted legal gun owners and guns; at least one lawmaker in Iowa has openly called for confiscation of guns from law-abiding citizens; and several media outlets have even run maps showing the homes, addresses and...

  • New pay-per-mile scheme would boost taxes 250 percent

An on-again, off-again move by the Obama administration to scrap the federal gas tax in favor of a pay-per-mile fee would boost the tab to Americans as high as 250 percent, raising their current tax of 18.4 cents a gallon to as high as 46 cents, according to a new government study. But without a tax increase, said the Government Accountability Office study, the government's highway fund is going to go dry. One reason the fund is going broke: President Obama's push for fuel efficient cars has resulted in better mileage, and fewer stops at the pump. The GAO study...
