Yesterday we reported on only two Republican state Senators here in New York having the courage to stand up against Governor Cuomo's political gun grab legislation. One of those Senators, Kathy Marchione, had started a petition on her website in an attempt to demonstrate "strong public support for preserving our Constitutional freedoms". The support is indeed strong, with reports indicating that signatures are being placed on the petition at a clip of over 1,300 per hour. Since yesterday, the petition - found here - has received over 40,000 signatures in total. Marchione posted this on Facebook earlier this afternoon: "40,402....

SHOULD the secretary-general of the United Nations, Ban ki-Moon, get his way, a newcomer will appear in the skies over eastern Congo. He has asked the Security Council to approve unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, for use in the troubled region. Supporters of their use, including the UN's head of peacekeeping operations, Hervé Ladsous, face a diplomatic battle to get their hands on any drones. China and Russia are reluctant to back their deployment. Rwanda, which has one of the rotating seats on the Security Council, and is accused of meddling in Congo, has also opposed their...

A Mormon linebacker who led his Catholic school's football program back to glory, Te'o was whipsawed between personal tragedies along the way. In the span of six hours in September, as Sports Illustrated told it, Te'o learned first of the death of his grandmother, Annette Santiago, and then of the death of his girlfriend, Lennay Kekua. Kekua, 22 years old, had been in a serious car accident in California, and then had been diagnosed with leukemia. SI's Pete Thamel described how Te'o would phone her in...

New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof is facing criticism after retweeting a controversial message that referred to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and the National Rifle Association as “the 2 most pig like lobbies” in America. Longtime Israel critic M.J. Rosenberg, who was dumped by the liberal Media Matters for America for his use of borderline anti-Semitic language, authored the controversial tweet Wednesday afternoon. As thousands of young Indians thronged New Delhi’s streets to protest a brutal gang rape last month, 25-year-old Pooja Patil said, many of her friends in this seaside metropolis held candlelight marches instead of new year’s parties. Others replaced their Facebook profile pictures with a single black dot as a symbol of mourning. They were part of what news media reports heralded as an Indian middle class jolted into action by the shocking assault that led to the young woman’s death. Yet the same demographic group is also at the heart of an illegal practice that experts say contributes to...
