As reported by Rusty Weiss for FreedomWorks, the Commonwealth Fund is sponsoring a two-day symposium, hosted by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) entitled “The Business of Health Care” at Reuters headquarters in New York City. The symposium will “offer specialized education in health care reporting” and “boost knowledge of the Affordable Care Act.” “The goal over two days will be to introduce fellows to...

A Navy veteran can be barred from owning a gun because of a 1968 misdemeanor conviction over a fistfight, a federal appeals court ruled. A three-judge panel in Washington upheld a lower-court ruling “which found ‘no constitutional impediment’ to including common-law misdemeanants” within the federal firearms ban. The lower court observed that “the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited,” U.S. Circuit Judge David Tatel wrote in Friday’s opinion. The federal ban applies to several categories of people, including fugitives, undocumented aliens, those who are judged mentally incompetent or those who have been convicted of felonies or certain...

The President has held two news conferences in three days commenting on the coming wave of gun control initiatives. His presentation has been emotional and properly reflects the anguish that we all feel for the victims of gun crime. It also has been a dazzling display of sophistry. I say that because the President is smart. And if he were not smart, I would say that, so far as his gun ban proposals, his comments were a profound display of ignorance. Responding to the run on guns precipitated by the preliminary proposals floated by his team, the President said that...

Young Europeans in countries hit hardest by the Continent's economic crisis are finding it difficult to move out of their parents' home. Data shows that over 50 percent of those aged 25 to 34 in some countries have yet to move out. Most young adults are eager to leave home to start independent lives. But in those European countries where the economic crisis has hit hardest -- particularly in southern and eastern EU member states -- that appears to be a difficult move to make. In 2011, more that 50 percent of the 25- to 34-year-olds in Greece, Bulgaria, Slovakia...

Hacktivist group Anonymous has now spoken out against President Barack Obama’s intentions to enact wider gun control in the U.S. In a 15-minute YouTube video, which first appeared on the social network two weeks ago, Anonymous criticized the Obama administration’s leveraging of violent gun crime to achieve its goal to control guns. “Throughout history, authoritarian governments have used gun violence as an excuse to take people’s firearms and control their population,” said Anonymous. “This is exactly what Adolf Hitler did to disarm the German people and look at the atrocities his administration did. Sixty percent of high school and college students say they plan on owning guns at a later stage in life, an academic study from American University revealed on Monday. According to the study, about 40 percent of the American students surveyed said they definitely planned to own firearms once they had established their own households. Another 20 percent said they were “contemplating” owning guns. Those findings were part of a broader study conducted by American University professor Jennifer L. Lawless and Loyola...

Germany’s central bank will repatriate gold reserves held at the New York Fed and the Banque de France. Bundesbank officials acknowledged the move is “preemptive” in case a “currency crisis” hits the European Monetary Union. While the Bundesbank tried to minimize the importance of the move, repatriating gold is a clear indication of public loss of confidence on foreign central banks and the integrity of the monetary union. Over the past few years, Venezuela, Libya, and Iran have also repatriated their gold holdings. “No, we have no intention to sell gold,” a Bundesbank spokesman said on the phone Wednesday, “[the...

It’s hard to find much inflation in the US economy right now. As measured by the Labor Department’s consumer price index, prices increased by just 1.7% in 2012. The core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, rose by 1.9%.Nor can much inflation be found in an alternate measure, the Commerce Department’s personal consumption expenditures prices index. It rose 1.45% for the twelve months ending last September. Excluding food and energy, it rose 1.58%. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke prefers the PCE price index because he believes it better reflects changes in consumer purchasing habits. But some skeptics say those...

When reporting about guns, I'm often asked whether I've fired one myself. "Just once," I'd reply, not elaborating to say I found my trip to a Virginia shooting range terrifying. So when I was sent to see how gun shops and shooting ranges around Philadelphia were faring amid the debate over firearms, I was prepared for the same question. But I wondered: Would shooting again change my ambivalence about guns? A Gallup poll found 47 percent of U.S. adults say they have a gun in their home or property.

Announcing anti-gun measures in front of a theatrical backdrop of children, itself a tactic associated with troubling historical precedents, President Barack Obama yesterday proposed specific legislative efforts related to guns for Congress to pass, and also outlined 23 measures he says can be implemented under executive authority. To set the stage for using children, the White House, along with a complicit anti-gun media, made a point of sharing letters from children, particularly those that resonate with the childish emotions of those who don’t know enough about guns to know they’re being manipulated. Case in point is the message from an...

JERUSALEM (AP) – Israel's prime minister on Wednesday dismissed President Barack Obama's reported displeasure with his hardline policies toward the Palestinians, a sign that the two could be headed for a showdown. Polls suggest Benjamin Netanyahu is poised to win Israel's elections next week and continue in office. This week an American columnist with close ties to the White House described Obama's disdain for Netanyahu, warning that Israel's all-important relationship with the U.S. could suffer in unprecedented ways if the Israeli government doesn't change its policies. Such a clash would come at a tense time when regional developments appear to...

Gun control is back. President Obama on Wednesday unveiled a series of feel-good measures designed to play on the emotions of Americans saddened by the horrific shooting of 20 students at Sandy Hook Elementary School last month. Almost nothing he proposes to do would make anyone safer. Surrounding himself with children, Mr. Obama said, “This will be difficult. There will be pundits and politicians and special-interest lobbyists publicly warning of a tyrannical, all-out assault on liberty — not because that’s true, but because they want to gin up fear or higher ratings or revenue for themselves.” The president said that...

Last night Gov. Deval Patrick declared war on the taxpayers of Massachusetts, proposing the largest tax hike in state history — nearly $2 billion. Today it’s time for voters to demand that their elected representatives choose up sides. They can give in to this lame duck governor intent on bringing taxpayers to their knees and economic growth to a standstill, or they can side with their hard-pressed constituents. The worst part is that this is a “crisis” of the governor’s own making. MBTA debt and deferred maintenance on it and state highways would be manageable with some reforms and a...

Pipeline flows from PADD 2 to PADD 3 will increase over the next two years as several major pipeline projects, starting with the Seaway Pipeline's current capacity expansion, are completed. As PADD 2...

To judge from his surly demeanor and defiant words at his press conference Monday, Barack Obama begins his second term with a strategy to defeat and humiliate Republicans rather than a strategy to govern.-SNIP-The push for gun control is more a symbolic gesture than a serious attempt at governing.Something better can be said about Obama's call for immigration law changes. The need for some change is clear. That was also true in Obama's first two years, when he did nothing to advance legislation on the subject when Democrats had a solid majorities in Congress. The question is whether Obama wants legislation or...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The number of Americans seeking unemployment aid plummeted to a five-year low last week, a hopeful sign the job market may be improving. But much of the decline reflects seasonal volatility in the data.

Weekly unemployment benefit applications fell 37,000 to a seasonally adjusted 335,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's the lowest level since January 2008, just after the recession began. The four-week average, a less volatile measure, fell to 359,250.

President Barack Obama is featuring eight Americans as "citizen co-chairs" of his inauguration, a new role created to highlight his first-term accomplishments with examples of lives that have either been improved by his actions or inspired his presidency. Inaugural planners say the honorees include a woman with a brain tumor who no longer is denied health care for a pre-existing condition; an autoworker who got her job back after the General Motors bailout; and a gay pilot-in-training kicked out of the Air Force before the president repealed the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. Inauguration officials said Wednesday that the...

Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead! But is Presidente Hugo Chavez of Venezuela still alive? In what might be a case of life imitating art, could the vice-president of Venezuela be attempting to replicate "Weekend At Bernie's?" To refresh your memory of that entertaining comedy movie, two young insurance executives are desperate to maintain the fiction that their boss, Bernie, is still alive at his beach house. The Venezuelan vice-president, Nicolas Maduro, is now ruling Venezuela in Hugo Chavez's absence especially since he was given the blessing as El Commandante's successor in December when we knew for sure that Chavez...

Iranian warships will be deployed to the Mediterranean sea, the Red Sea and other regional waterways, Tehran’s navy said on Wednesday. The move will put Iranian firepower at Israel’s doorstep, and likely raise tensions in the already skittish region. … The Iranian navy has steadily expanded its international presence since 2008, when it began patrolling in the Gulf of Aden to protect commercial vessels owned or leased by Iran against piracy. Last year, two Iranian warships for the first time in decades traveled through the Suez Canal, extending Iran’s naval reach to the Mediterranean Sea. …

The Obama Economy: Americans are drawing down their 401(k)s for nonretirement needs in record numbers, just as Social Security goes bust. This portends poverty for millions as the White House fiddles. Cat food, anyone? One out of four U.S. workers with 401(k) retirement savings accounts has been forced to cash them out or borrow from them at high costs just to stay solvent. The Washington Post, citing a report from financial advisory firm HelloWallet, said the withdrawals have drained $70 billion, or an astonishing near-quarter of the total $293 billion, in America's retirement accounts "undermining already shaky retirement security for...
