Washington (CNN) -- The Pentagon has begun laying off 46,000 contract and temporary civilian employees in an effort to cut back on military spending, the No. 2 Pentagon official said on Friday. Full time civilian employees, which number in the hundreds of thousands, also will be furloughed for one day a week for 22 weeks, Deputy Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in an interview with wire service reporters. His comments were confirmed by a Pentagon spokesman.
  • A gun show without guns? Essentially (Chicago)

There was an 1854 Lefaucheux pinfire pistol carbine on display, as well as an 1876 .22-caliber derringer in a glass box. But neither was for sale. It wouldn't have mattered if they were. The gun enthusiasts who showed up in Rosemont on Friday for what was billed as the first-ever Chicagoland Gun Show didn't seem interested in gawking at antique pistols. Some wanted to buy high-powered rifles, semi-automatic handguns and high-capacity magazines. But there wasn't a single gun dealer at the show, only a Chicago collector who said he was there to show off his collection. "I've been to a...

Biases upfront: I'm a 46 year-old health nut obsessed with exercise and eating right. I don’t smoke or drink, and there are supermodels who worry less about their weight. However, I do admire those who don't live like that; who might not live as long as I do, but will probably enjoy their overall quality of life more than my somewhat Spartan one. Oh, and I also realize that this is America. And if people want to pursue happiness through a double cheeseburger and a pack of Newports, any joyless, left-wing bossy-pants who has a problem with that can go...

A muslim who raped a 13-year-old girl he groomed on Facebook has been spared a prison sentence after a judge heard he went to an Islamic faith school where he was taught that women are worthless. Adil Rashid, 18, claimed he was not aware that it was illegal for him to have sex with the girl because his education left him ignorant of British law. Yesterday Judge Michael Stokes handed Rashid a suspended sentence, saying: ‘Although chronologically 18, it is quite clear from the reports that you are very naive and immature when it comes to sexual matters.’ Earlier Nottingham...

PRAYER Dear Lord.... As we offer You thanks and praise, we realize how important it is to stay prepared for all the surprises in life. Daily, so many things catch us off guard, though they seem to happen over and over again. Would life be easier if we could begin the day with, "This is a drill. This is a drill"? Would we be any more prepared if there were drills for the many personal challenges we respond to daily? Besides a "general quarters" for missile hits, we'd prepare to take hits for all the...

In Sarah Palin’s first interview since parting ways with Fox News, the former Alaska governor said she doesn’t want to “just preach to the choir" and that she is looking to take her message to a "larger audience." Palin told Breitbart News there needs to be “more truth-telling in the media” and called for fellow conservatives to follow her lead and expand their audience. “I encourage others to step out in faith, jump out of the comfort zone, and broaden our reach as believers in American exceptionalism,” she told the conservative news site in a short Q&A. “That means broadening...

This is the first day of the gun show since the City of Austin discussed possibly banning from the Travis County Expo Center. State law, however, prevailed because the move would have proved illegal in Texas... “It took 20 minutes to park the truck and about an hour waiting in line,” Another group, One Million Moms for Gun Control marched at the Texas Capitol... The group expected over 100 participants to join in the Austin event.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said Thursday that he was working on a bill with Senate colleagues and the National Rifle Association (NRA) that would implement universal background checks, a major component of President Obama's proposed gun-control reforms. Manchin, a member of the NRA, had not previously endorsed any specific measures to address gun violence. "I’m working on a bill right now with other senators — Democrats and Republicans — we’re trying to get it, and looking at a background check that basically says that if you’re going to be a gun owner, you should be able to pass a background...

After Likud Beytenu’s Pyrrhic victory in the Israeli elections, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu will most likely be confronted with the formidable task of piecing together a new coalition. Given the diverse group of potential partners, this will be no easy task. First and foremost in this cast of characters is Yesh Atid, led by popular TV personality Yair Lapid, who surprised everyone by becoming the second largest party in the incoming Knesset. It now seems clear that the key to the new coalition is in its hands. Defining his party as Center rather than Left, Lapid has been quite clear...

Veteran programmer Rob Barnett recently attended a breakfast meeting of television executives where the talk turned, as it almost always does these days, to “disruption,” the industry buzzword for the way new technology is upsetting the TV applecart. From somewhere down the table, he heard a question: “Has anybody here cut the cord?” — that is, dropped cable service in favor of just watching TV through the Internet? Barnett shrugged and raised his hand. “Mine was the only one,” he recalls. “But when it went up, I saw beads of sweat break out on the foreheads of some of the...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michelle Obama has a new look, both in person and online, and with the president's re-election, she has four more years as first lady, too. That's got many people wondering: What will she do with them? Take on a new cause? Travel more? Trace the path of another first lady and keep the Obama political brand alive by running for office? The answers are to be determined. The first lady is trying to figure out what comes next for this self-described "mom in chief" who also is a champion of healthier eating, an advocate for military families,...

It’s safe to say Feinstein, Obama and the rest of the gun control gang face an uphill battle when it comes to limiting any Second Amendment rights. According to a Fox News poll, most Americans—both Republicans and Democrats—would defy any new laws that would take away their guns. But on to Question 47, addressed to those with a gun in their home: "If the government passed a law to take your guns, would you give up your guns or defy the law and keep your guns?" The response: 65 percent reported they would "defy the law." That incudes 70 percent...
  • New York Gun Owners Flip the Bird to "Assault Weapons" Registration Law

New York Governor Cuomo the Junior may have rushed through his new gun control law with such speed that police will avoid its restrictions only through the blessed miracle of selective enforcement, but he may have a little trouble getting the state's firearms owners to attend his party. The new law requires owners of those scary-looking rifles known as "assault weapons" to register their property (amidst assurances that, oh no, the registration lists will never be used for confiscation), but gun rights activists are actively urging gun owners to defy the new mandate.

Forty years after Roe v. Wade, a powerful shift is taking place within Big Abortion. What abortion advocates could not win through choice, they intend to impose through coercion. Even Time magazine recently acknowledged on their cover that, for those so inclined to celebrate Roe’s anniversary, the rejoicing over abortion on demand should be tinged with concern.  On January 14th Time asked “What Choice?” and then answered their own question:  “40 years ago, abortion rights activists won an epic victory with Roe v. Wade,” the cover noted and then concluded: “They’ve been losing ever since.” When viewed through the lens...

Coincidentally, our agriculture minister came from Rockefeller Foundation America's foreign policy has always been about maximizing its economic interests at all costs. That America shouldn't be mistaken as a softer, a kinder, and a gentler empire — notwithstanding its display of internal freedom and democracy — wasn't in doubt. And that was demonstrated by the speed with which it went about consolidating and maximizing control of global power upon taking it from Britain, as never seen since the time of Alexander the Great. The actions within its elite foreign policy circles demonstrated that. And this was clearly confirmed in a...

The Biggest Losers Of The Past 5 Years Joe WeisenthalJanuary 26, 2013, 9:42 AMYou could argue that economic policy makers have done a disappointing job over the past five years, trying to get advanced economies back on their feet. Growth is still slow in the US, and job creation is subpar. But in a sense, the past five years have been a huge vindication for mainstream economic approaches, as these huge experiments in recovery have not had the nasty effects that so many people would have predicted. Consider all of the people who have spent the last few years talking...

MK-elect Moshe Feiglin (Likud) has come out against the attempt by Minister Benny Begin (Likud) to pass a highly contested pro-Bedouin decision in the cabinet session Sunday. "Former Minister Benny Begin does not respect the democratic decision that he will not be a minister," accused Feiglin, "and in a desperate last-minute move he is trying to carry out a grab, and get the cabinet to adopt a decision in the serious matter of Bedouin settlement in the Negev." "In his proposal, Begin abandons the Jewish settlement enterprise in the Negev and proves that the rule of law and court decisions...
