An armed guard at a Georgia middle school disarmed a student who had opened fire, wounding one person. A student opened fire at his middle school Thursday afternoon, wounding a 14-year-old in the neck before an armed officer working at the school was able to get the gun away, police said. Multiple shots were fired in the courtyard of Price Middle School just south of downtown about 1:50 p.m. and the one boy was hit, Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said. In the aftermath, a teacher received minor cuts, he said. The wounded boy was taken "alert, conscious and breathing"...

In a meeting Thursday, the board voted to request the town to add full time uniformed school resource officers to its four elementary school s for the next fiscal year was approved this evening. • Bursting the Washington Bubble: The Outlook for 2013

Yes, it’s that time of year again. It’s time to hold our nose and check the diaper that we have all come to know as Obamanomics. While rightly this review should have been completed closer to the first of the year, there were too many events in the offing that were likely to impact the economy to take a stab at the broad outlines of an economic outlook nearer New Year’s Eve.But now that congress and the president have agreed to get the tax increase off the table that they didn’t dare pass while campaigning, clear the children from the...

The number of Americans not in the labor force grew by 169,000 in January, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest jobs report. BLS labels people who are unemployed and no longer looking for work as “not in the labor force,” including people who have retired on schedule, taken early retirement, or simply given up looking for work. There were 89 million of them last month.

This is the day John Forbes “Liveshot” Kerry stops being our senator. The governor, who was born in Illinois, is replacing the senator who was born in Colorado with an interim senator who was born in North Carolina who will serve on Capitol Hill with the “senior” senator who was born in Oklahoma." The state’s embattled welfare chief was forced to step down yesterday in the wake of a shocking internal report that found that a staggering 47,000 families receiving taxpayer-funded benefits are unaccounted for — and nearly $30 million in food stamp money went to recipients who were not eligible.

Sure, Chuck Hagel might have been a bumbling, stumbling mess at his confirmation hearing yesterday. But the real story was how awful were the Republicans who questioned him. That was the collective judgment of today's Morning Joe panel. For example, so contemptuous was Joe Scarborough of Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, that the Morning Joe host announced that he would not even mention him by name. "Clown show" was the panel's operative phrase for the Republican performance. Andrea Mitchell, Mika Brzezinski, Mike Barnicle et al. joined in the Republican roasting. View the video here.

A retired Los Angeles cardinal accused of mismanaging a child sex abuse crisis has been stripped of all administrative and public duties by his successor. Retired Cardinal Roger Mahony, 76, has apologised for his "failure", Archbishop Jose Gomez said on Thursday. The Los Angeles archdiocese, the largest in the US, has released thousands of pages of files on priests accused of child molestation. Cardinal Mahony retired in 2011, having run the archdiocese for 25 years. In 2007 Los Angeles paid $660m (£415m) to alleged victims of abuse, the largest sex abuse payout on record. Cardinal Mahony has publicly apologised for...
  • The Abortionist Saints of Sundance

Robert Redford's Sundance Film Festival featured a documentary celebrating four "amazing" abortionists who evacuate wombs in the third trimester of pregnancy. The critics in attendance loved it. The Philadelphia Inquirer boasted it drew "two standing ovations -- one for the doctors." Sundance attendees in Utah were greeted by police and armed sheriffs in green jumpsuits that made a show of force outside the theater. They had to have their bags searched and were inspected with handheld metal detectors. After the movie was shown, two police officers stood at the front of the auditorium as the directors and the four abortionists...

Where’s the senator? A day after allegations swirled that he cavorted with underage hookers in the Dominican Republic, Sen. Robert Menendez played a cat-and-mouse game with reporters. The camera crews parked outside the New Jersey Democrat’s office Thursday never got a glimpse of him. The usually accessible senator managed to avoid reporters almost all day, even as he cast six Senate votes and attended a lunch with Vice President Biden and other Democrats to talk about gun control. The Daily News finally caught up with Menendez as he ducked into an out-of-the-way Capitol elevator with visitors from New Jersey. But...

The launch of a Russian rocket carrying an American communications satellite ended in disaster today after it plunged into the sea 40 seconds after blast-off. Grainy footage of the launch being streamed online was cut shortly after 6.56am GMT when the space-bound vessel got into trouble. The Swiss-based Sea Launch company sent up their Zenit-3SL rocket from the Odyssey Launch Platform in the Pacific Ocean on Friday. However, the vessel – along with its Intelsat 27 telecommunications satellite inside - suffered a failure during the first stage of its flight. It is claimed the rocket’s engines shut off stopped automatically...

As he begins his second term, President Obama is barreling toward what one Bay Area activist predicts could be "all out warfare" with environmentalists who want him to stop the Keystone XL Pipeline, the transcontinental conduit for tar sands fuel from Canada that many scientists say could expedite climate change. Obama's political dilemma lies in the pipeline's potential upside: The State Department projects that it could deliver 6,000 temporary jobs to the U.S., where 12.2 million people are unemployed. Bay Area liberals leading the Keystone opposition say Obama has only one choice. "If he doesn't reject it," said Piedmont attorney...

Clyde, N.Y. - Two Amish men from Wayne County are accused of killing a litter of healthy puppies and their mother. “This is simply a case of animal cruelty,” says Wayne County District Attorney Rick Healy who intends to charge the pair. The nine dead dogs were discovered in a compost pile and reported to police January 17th. Merlin Schumacher who owns the dogs says he was trying to breed Australian Red Heelers, but when he couldn’t sell the dogs and they became “too big” he asked an employee to shoot them. Jonathan Eicher agreed to put the dogs down....
  • How The South Will Rise To Power Again

    02/01/2013 6:14:22 AM PST · by BO Stinkss · 44 replies ^ | 01/31/2013 | Joel Kotkin
The common media view of the South is as a regressive region, full of overweight, prejudiced, exploited and undereducated numbskulls. This meme was perfectly captured in this Bill Maher-commissioned video from Alexandra Pelosi, the New York-based daughter of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Given the level of imbecility, maybe we’d be better off if the former Confederate states exiled themselves into their own redneck empire. Travel writer Chuck Thompson recently suggested this approach in a new book. Right now, however, Northeners can content themselves with the largely total isolation of Southerners from the corridors of executive power. Yet even as...

Conservatives are always told they don't do enough to reach across the aisle. We're divisive, obstructionist and hostile to bipartisanship. So in the spirit of unity and comity, I'm announcing the formation of a new social justice group: Ladies Against Senator Sleaze-Bob. Now all I need are some principled Democratic ladies and liberal media lionesses to step up to the plate with me to protest the vulgar, sexist behavior of Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J. Surely, Nancy Pelosi, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Cher, Sandra Fluke, Eva Longoria and I can all agree that when a powerful Washington politician abuses his power to...

After decades of statist policies, ostensibly to make us "safer" (offensively misnamed "Patriot Act," anyone?), the United States is far less the beacon of liberty than it once was. And yet, given the sad state of much of the rest of the world, the U.S. is still about the best place in the world for a freedom loving individual. Gun-hating Americans are working hard to change that, with U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) going so far as trying to sell the public on her forcible citizen disarmament agenda by pointing out that tyrannical countries would respect us more if...

Edward I. Koch, the master showman of City Hall, who parlayed shrewd political instincts and plenty of chutzpah into three tumultuous terms as mayor of New York with all the tenacity, zest and combativeness that personified his city of golden dreams, died Friday morning at age 88. Mr. Koch’s spokesman, George Arzt, said the former mayor died at 2 a.m. from congestive heart failure. He was being treated at New York-Presbyterian Columbia Hospital.

. A bipartisan push intensified Thursday for answers from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives about a flawed storefront sting in Milwaukee. A Journal Sentinel investigation this week exposed a 10-month federal operation marred by a series of mistakes and failures, including an agent's machine gun being stolen and burglars ripping off $35,000 in merchandise from the agency's phony store. Milwaukee police and ATF are still looking for that stolen machine gun, officials said Thursday. "Suffice to say, ATF and the police department both have a keen interest in trying to get that firearm back," said Milwaukee...
