ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) - Police say a serial burglar, who has been arrested 37 times, was shot by a homeowner in northwest Albuquerque Sunday morning. Authorities say the homeowner heard a loud bang and then his alarm go off. After arming himself with a gun the homeowner says he saw the burglar at the top of his stairs and shot at him twice, hitting him once. Police say the burglar will survive his wounds. That burglar has been identified as Richard Garcia, 43, a man with a very long history of home and vehicle burglaries. Court records show he's been prosecuted...

Newark Mayor Cory Booker made a statement on HBO's Real Time Friday that should please gun rights advocates across the fruited plain. Despite being for stronger gun laws, Booker said, "Legal gun buyers are not causing murders in Newark and Chicago and other places" … CORY BOOKER, NEWARK MAYOR (D-N.J.): To me, the data should drive our decision making. So I know, I’m not afraid of people having guns who are law abiding citizens. In the analysis of gun murders and shootings in my city, I could only find one in the entire time I’ve been mayor...The guns that are...

The home of two Wright State students was invaded Monday evening in Fairborn, ending with one of the alleged intruders dying from a gunshot wound. According to a Dayton Daily News article published Monday and updated Tuesday afternoon, “Police said Tuesday that it is still a bit unclear what prompted the five individuals, ages 19 to 23, to force their way into the Victoria Avenue home while brandishing a fake plastic gun.” The article continues, “Two Wright State students were home when the intruders entered. Trent Seitz, 21, reportedly struggled with the men and was ordered to the floor. He...

What's Up With That? The week in Gore:February 2, 2013 Al Gore has been running the interview circuit this week, and it seems since his sale of CURRENT TV to Al Jazeerra he has gone from golden boy to goblin boy in the eyes of the media. He’s pushing his usual set of tabloid climatology claims in the process, but all they want to know about is why he sold out to “big oil”. Below are a few excerpts from headlines and some interviews. My favorite is from my radio commentator friend Lars Larson in Portland, who had so much fun...
  • Psst! Harbaugh Brothers and Family (and Ravens' Owner) Are Devoted Catholics

A Google News search ths morning on "Harbaugh brothers Catholic" (not in quotes, sorted by date, with duplicates and originally omitted items), returned 24 items. A broader search at the Associated Press's national site on "Harbaugh Catholic" (not in quotes) came up empty. This is disappointing, given that both brothers are by all accounts very active in and devoted to the Catholic Church. The stories found at Google News were predominantly from Catholic-oriented publications, with the most notable exception being one by Matthew Barrows at the Sacramento Bee, whose story comprised 15 of those 24 listed results. Excerpts from that...

Schumer came with Democratic Sens. Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Richard J. Durbin of Illinois. Graham and McCain brought fellow Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah. It was clear to the senators that one voice could prove crucial to their hope to sell a plan to conservatives: Sen. Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican and Cuban American with conservative credentials, who could become a champion untainted by past scars over immigration. Soon after that meeting, Durbin was in the Senate gym and spotted Rubio pedaling a stationary bike. "Marco, you got to be there," Durbin said. "I want you there...

CNN must be so proud! On Sunday, the self-described most trusted name in news aired a thirteen minute interview with Global Warmingist-in-Chief Al Gore, and although the subject of the sale of Current TV was raised, host Fareed Zakaria didn't ask him one question about al Jazeera's connection to oil (video follows with transcript and commentary): What a Joke! Zakaria Doesn't Ask Gore About Al Jazeera's Connection To Oil! FAREED ZAKARIA: Current TV, a great business deal, but you started it because you wanted to create a greater, well, another liberal voice, a stronger one, an independent voice. Is this...

In addition to granting conditional release to Rick and Ryin Reese, the two remaining members of a New Mexico gun dealer family still behind bars after 18 months incarceration, Judge Robert C. Brack of the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico has also granted a motion for a new trial, a Memorandum and Opinion Order filed today mandates. “This matter came before the Court on Defendants’ Motion for a New Trial … and Motion for Release on Conditions Pending Sentencing,” the order states. “On January 28, 2013, the Court held a hearing on these motions. Shane L. Windmeyer, a prominent LGBT activist and leader, "nervously" revealed to the public that he developed a friendship with Dan Cathy, the president and chief operating officer of Chick-fil-A, despite their strongly opposing views on same-sex marriage. "I spent New Year's Eve at the red-blooded, all-American epicenter of college football: at the Chick-fil-A Bowl, next to Dan Cathy, as his personal guest. It was among the most unexpected moments of my life," Windmeyer begins in a blog for The Huffington Post published earlier this week. Windmeyer, the co-founder and executive director of Campus Pride, a leading national organization for...

WASHINGTON — On the Saturday morning after 7 in 10 Latino voters helped return President Obama to the White House and deliver a crushing defeat to Mitt Romney, Charles E. Schumer, the Democratic senator from New York, scanned his daily list of phone messages and saw that Lindsey Graham, the Republican senator from South Carolina, had called. Schumer dialed his number. "I saw your name on my call list, and my heart skipped a beat," he said. "We're getting the band back together," Graham replied. "Let's do immigration." [...] It was clear to the senators that one voice could prove...

Despite two orders from an obviously irked New Mexico U.S. District Court judge that the Reese family will be given a new trial and that father Rick and son Reese are to be released on bond, the pair remain behind bars this weekend because monitoring devices required by the order are not on hand, sources close to the case have confirmed to Gun Rights Examiner. “Yes, bail money is good for now,” the source reveled, explaining “relatives, good friends and well-wishers have donated to the defense fund. “They are waiting for the ankle monitors to get in for the release....

Mark Kelly, husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords, spoke to Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday this week, reiterating his support for universal background checks and responding to the NRA’s anti-gun control arguments. Simply put, Kelly said, less people would die due to gun violence if the legislation were put in place. Wallace looked to the example of Jared Loughner, the gunman who opened fire in Arizona, killing and injuring many, including Giffords. He passed a background check, Wallace noted. Loughner clearly was mentally ill, Kelly said — and if his condition was entered into the background check system, presumably...

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says it would “really be a shameful and irresponsible act” for Congress to allow sequestration to happen. “We have to prepare for it, because, you know, there are members up on the Capitol Hill that are saying, ‘Oh no, we're gonna stand back and let sequester happen,’” Panetta said in an interview aired Sunday on NBC’s "Meet the Press." “Let me tell you: If sequester happens, it is gonna badly damage the readiness of the United States of America. We have the most powerful military force on the face of the earth right now.” If sequester...

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman on Sunday once again perfectly illustrated the intolerance of America's liberal media. Appearing on ABC's This Week, he said the National Rifle Association is - and I quote! - "an insane organization" (video follows with transcript and commentary): Krugman: NRA Is 'An Insane Organization' PAUL KRUGMAN, NEW YORK TIMES: But what really strikes me -- I don't know how this plays, you know, what will happen. What strikes me is we've actually gotten a glimpse into the mindset, though, of the pro-gun people and we've seen certainly Wayne LaPierre and some of these others....

When Hillary Clinton took office, much of the world had been alienated from the United States by the policies of the Bush administration. Expectations were high that President Obama's team would change the tone, and Clinton delivered. She put a glamorous, smart, politically astute face on American policy. Yet Clinton produced no diplomatic breakthroughs nor any new strategic doctrine. And when it comes to issues of war and peace - in the Mideast, South Asia, and North Asia - she leaves a minimal legacy. In large part, that's because policy-making was tightly controlled by the White House. It's hard to know...

(Reuters) - French warplanes pounded Islamist rebel camps in the far north of Mali on Sunday, military sources said, a day after French President Francois Hollande was hailed as a savior during a visit to the West African country. Thierry Burkhard, spokesman for the French army in Paris, said the overnight raids targeted logistics bases and training camps used by the al Qaeda-linked rebels near the town of Tessalit, close to the Algerian border. ... France says the rebels are also holding hostage in these mountains seven of its citizens, seized in recent years in the Sahara region. Malian military...

Foetuses are being aborted for minor and treatable imperfections such as cleft lip and palate or club foot every year in the UK. New research suggests that dozens of abortions are carried out but the reasons are not being officially recorded. Health bosses have admitted there may be 'discrepancies' in their records after European monitoring group Eurocat found the number of abortions for minor abnormalities could be up to three times as high as official statistics show. According to Eurocat, 157 foetuses were aborted in England and Wales between 2006 and 2010 for cleft lip and palate. However, the Sunday...

--snip-- It's the biggest privacy breach in our time, and it's legal and no one knows it's going on," one critic, who runs an employment-background firm, told Sullivan. "It's like a secret CIA." As a frequent critic of the credit-reporting system, I'm heartened when others are shocked at disclosures about the industry's practices. But here's the truly scary thing: If you ask some of the lawyers and privacy advocates who pay even closer attention, the Equifax disclosures don't seem so shocking. "If people are outraged by this, they should be outraged by the whole idea of credit reporting and background...
