  • How Gays and Women Get In Their Own Way

Gays can be leaders. Women can be leaders. Without realizing it, I think gays and women inadvertently work against their own objective of equality when they force private organizations to support gay and female leaders. As I wrote here, gays and women are already equal before the Constitution, which defines us by our humanity, not by our sexuality, and is silent on most personal matters like marriage. Furthermore, the more the federal government defines our rights, the less free, equal and human we all become. Here is what generally happens when minority groups confuse social acceptance with equality and push...
  • Trilateral peace talks in Britain to send clear message to the Taliban

Afghan President Hamid Karzai and his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari held peace talks with British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday which for the first time featured top spy chiefs. The summit at Cameron’s Chequers country retreat near London is aimed at boosting cooperation between Afghanistan and Pakistan, amid growing fears that a civil war could erupt when international troops leave Afghanistan in 2014. “This trilateral process sends a very clear message to the Taliban -- now is the time for everyone to participate in a peaceful political process in Afghanistan,” a British government spokeswoman said. snip The president...

It could happen--Barack Obama and John Roberts in an epic clash. For institutional, ideological, and personal reasons, the two charismatic heavyweights may be on a collision course. Obama is a fierce competitor who climbed the ranks from local Chicago pol to president in just 6 years. He envisions a different American society--more liberal and redistributive, with a government powerful enough to make it happen. His ambitious Second Inaugural prompted even the New York Times to fit into print “Obama offers liberal vision.” From preserving every inch of turf held by our overdrawn entitlement society, to game-changing action on guns, global...

Here's a story that will leave you scratching your head. A Christian church and affiliated school in Florida held a fundraising drive to help the Wounded Warrior Project. Children in the school were excited about the task, but later were crushed when the funds were turned down, because the organization is "religious in nature." As reported by Todd Starnes at Fox Radio, the pastor of Liberty Baptist Church and Academy, Wallace Cooley, said that "they had already paid a $100 registration fee to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project and were about to launch the campaign when they received...

Ahmadinejad says he is ready to be first Iranian in space Reuters – 1 hr 31 mins ago DUBAI (Reuters) - President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Monday he was ready to be the first human sent into orbit by Iran's fledgling space program, Iranian media reported. Iran declared last week that it had successfully launched a monkey into space and retrieved it alive, which officials hailed as a major step towards their goal of sending humans into space. The launch added to Western concerns about Iran's space program because the same rocket technology could potentially be used to deliver a...

A man accused of brandishing knives outside Buckingham Palace has been charged after being Tasered by police. Police used the stun gun on Talhat Rehman, 54, when he was seen ranting when challenged outside the palace gates on Sunday morning. Mr Rehman, of Lindsay Drive, Harrow, will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court later charged with possessing a bladed weapon in public and affray. The Queen and Prince Philip were at Sandringham at the time. Two knives and a pair of trainers were left inside a police cordon set up around the area. The incident happened at about 11:50 GMT during...

I am going to let my subscription to Sports Illustrated lapse when it runs out this year. I hope lots of other people will do the same. Like too many other publications, the magazine has become dishonest, dishonorable and even occasionally despicable in its conformist, lockstep left-wing bias. Republican politicians and conservative positions are routinely insulted in articles having nothing to do with either. Yawn-inducing left wing predictability is brought to the discussion of every issue. No SI writer is allowed to disagree with leftism ever. Despite its great photographs and occasionally good athlete profiles, the magazine has remade itself...

Last August, I wrote an article for The Diplomat that discussed some of the issues Japan is facing in relation to population decline. As I noted, the population has dropped for three years in a row. Recently, the Japanese government announced that the population decrease for 2012 is expected to be 212,000—a new record—while the number of births is expected to have fallen by 18,000 to 1,033,000—also a record low.

(Editor’s Note: Barack Obama will not make an appearance in this column.)Dear Coach, Now that the Superbowl is over, it’s not too late to begin thinking about “next” year. So, pursuant with the terms of my plea bargain agreement and by order of the court, “Number 81®” hereby submits this apology to you, to the patrons of Danny’s All Night Café and to the fine ladies of the Buddy’s Airport Lounge and Go-Go Barn (home of the $12.99 T-bone-lap-dance combo). While the words have been crafted on the advice of Number 81®’s attorney, the sincerity is 110 percent mine. I...

Canadians worried US president won’t honor Nebraska governor’s decision The Canadian government has suddenly turned edgy about hopes of seeing TransCanada’s Keystone XL pipeline clearing its final regulatory hurdle and spreading fresh optimism among Alberta oil sands and Bakken producers. Now that Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman has sent a letter to President Barack Obama endorsing TransCanada’s proposed rerouting of the pipeline to avoid the state’s ecologically sensitive Sandhills region, the final verdict rests with the U.S. State Department which must issue a Presidential Permit for any pipeline crossing the Canada-U.S. border. At the same time a letter signed by 53...
  • French tanker with 17 aboard likely hijacked by pirates off Ivory Coast

A French-owned oil tanker missing off Ivory Coast with 17 sailors on board likely has been hijacked, an official with an international piracy watchdog said Monday, in what may be the latest attack by criminal gangs targeting the ships to steal their valuable cargo. Details remained scarce Monday about the fate of the ship, flagged in Luxembourg. The ship had been reported missing Sunday and officials believe it fell victim to the same pirates operating throughout the Gulf of Guinea, said Noel Choong, a spokesman for the International Maritime Bureau in Malaysia. ... • Why is government stockpiling guns, ammo?(Video at Link)

Is the U.S. government getting ready for a war we don’t know about? And, if that’s why Washington is stockpiling massive amounts of ammunition (hollow points, by the way), why is Homeland Security doing the buying instead of the Defense Department? I have some theories. Many of you will remember a story I broke a long time ago – about presidential candidate Barack Obama’s little-noticed announcement that, if elected in 2008, he wanted to create a “civilian national security force” as big, as strong and as well-funded as the Defense Department. Here’s what he actually said at a campaign stop...
  • Beer will help power Alaska brewery

    Anchorage Daily News ^ | February 3, 2013 | JOSHUA BERLINGER
The Alaskan Brewing Co. is going green, but instead of looking to solar and wind energy, it has turned to a very familiar source: beer. The Juneau-based beer maker has installed a unique boiler system in order to cut its fuel costs. It purchased a $1.8 million furnace that burns the company's spent grain - the waste accumulated from the brewing process - into steam which powers the majority of the brewery's operations. Company officials now joke they are now serving "beer-powered beer." What to do with spent grain was seemingly solved decades ago by breweries operating in the Lower...
  • APNewsBreak: Government says warming climate threatens survival of snow-loving wolverine

    02/04/2013 5:30:19 AM PST · by SoFloFreeper · 16 replies
The tenacious wolverine, a snow-loving carnivore sometimes called the “mountain devil,” could soon join the list of species threatened by climate change —a dubious distinction putting it in the ranks of the polar bear and several other animals the government says will lose crucial habitat as temperatures rise. Federal wildlife officials Friday proposed Endangered Species Act protections for the wolverine in the Lower 48 states. That’s a step twice denied under the Bush administration, then delayed in 2010 when the Obama administration said other imperiled species had priority. It likely means an end to trapping the animals for their fur...

(CNN) -- On Thursday, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced the Defense Department would lift the ban on women serving in combat, marking another significant milestone for equality in our nation. Taking this critical step forward to include women in combat strengthens our military by reducing the burden of the disproportionate number of soldiers who are making sacrifices. I sincerely hope that this will spark a national debate about who is fighting our wars and whether all of America can say that we're sharing the sacrifice. Since January 2003, at the height of the debate on the possible unilateral strike against...
  • Slamming 'Certifiable' Cucinelli, Scarborough Contradicts Himself On Conservative Candidates

The regularity with which Joe Scarborough speaks about having won his congressional races has become a matter of mirth on Morning Joe. When Joe did so yet again this morning, he wound up contradicting himself on the issue of the electability of conservative candidates. Scarborough was criticizing candidates who are supposedly too conservative to win, citing Republican Senate candidate Ken Cuccinelli of Virginia, whom he called "certifiable" on some issues. But—unable to resist a boast—Scarborough then contradicted himself, recalling that when he ran for Congress from Florida, "Newt Gingrich and the the Republican establishment worked against me, because they thought...

Sen. Barry Loudermilk, R-Cassville, introduced a bill Jan. 30 that would allow 18- to 21-year-olds to apply for a Georgia weapons carry license so long as they have had military training. The current law only allows those older than 21 to apply for a license. Senate Bill 74 would wave that requirement for any Georgia resident between the ages of 18 and 20 who has graduated basic military training with any branch of the U.S. military or the Coast Guard and allow them to acquire a carry license. For Loudermilk, the bill is another way to help veterans returning to...

Silver appeared on ESPN's First Take to explain how he arrived at his prediction. Most of the segment was devoted to the choice of Seattle as the NFC representative.

A former Egyptian presidential candidate told Al Arabiya TV in an interview on Sunday that the brutal dragging and beating of a naked man near the presidential palace last week was previously planned by the interior ministry in an effort to terrorize the public. Ahmed Shafiq, who lost the presidential race to Islamist President Mohammed Morsi last year, said the widely circulated video of 50-year-old Hamada Saber was intended to send a message of fear to those protesting in the streets against the brutal reign of the Muslim Brotherhood. The torture is a “new style of exaggerated terrorism used against...
  • Nate Silver Predicts The 49ers Will Win The Super Bowl Today

    SF Chronicle ^ | 2/4/13 | Kevin Smith
Nate Silver is betting on the 49ers to win today's big game. The statistician and blogger has combed through data from previous Super Bowl games and noticed a trend where teams with the best defense ultimately over teams with better offense. "The reasons that exceptional defenses fare so much better in the Super Bowl are still somewhat murky, but this factor bodes well for this year’s 49ers, whose defense belongs in the elite group," writes Silver.
