President Barack Obama said there is “no doubt” the government needs new revenue from closing tax “loopholes” and limiting deductions, along with enacting spending cuts, to reduce the federal deficit, Bloomberg reported. Revenue could be raised through an overhaul of the tax code, he said, “and we can do it in a gradual way so that it doesn’t have a huge impact.” “There is no doubt we need additional revenue, coupled with smart spending reductions in order to bring down our deficit,” he said.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentina announced a two-month price freeze on supermarket products Monday in an effort to break spiraling inflation. The price freeze applies to every product in all of the nation's largest supermarkets — a group including Walmart, Carrefour, Coto, Jumbo, Disco and other large chains. The companies' trade group, representing 70 percent of the Argentine market, reached the accord with Commerce Secretary Guillermo Moreno, the government's news agency Telam reported. The commerce ministry wants consumers to keep receipts and complain to a hotline about any price hikes they see before April 1. Polls show Argentines worry...

On her MSNBC show today, Andrea Mitchell claimed that recent weather events including Superstorm Sandy have "taught us if nothing else, that we have a real climate problem and that we have to deal with this here even if the rest of the world isn't going to deal with it in China and elsewhere." The Civil Authority and the IDF has cleared out 20,000 cubic tons of trash from an illegal Arab dump in Samaria, after ongoing appeals from an environmental organization. The Yarok Achshav (“Green Now”) group expressed its satisfaction at the resolution of the issue, preventing further damage to the environment by Arabs in the area. The site of the dump, near the Arab village of Kafr Duma, was situated right atop a well that tapped directly in into the large aquifer that runs under Samaria. As such, there was a strong danger that the groundwater throughout the entire region would have...
  • Chilling Video: Thousands of Nazis March through Athens

videoTens of thousands of neo-Nazis rallied in Athens in support of Greece's far-right Golden Dawn party, in the movement's largest demonstration of support since its rise to power in last June’s general election. Men dressed in military uniforms, holding torches, donning swastikas and chanting anti-immigrant slogans, marched through central Athens in what was reportedly a memorial event paying tribute to the party’s “fallen soldiers,” The International Business Times reported. "This is a day of remembrance. It's a day to remember that Golden Dawn is here to stay. And so long as it does, there will be hope for the country,"...

From Cashill's novel 2006: the Chautauqua Rising, which was published in the year 2000, New York State officials exploit a school shooting to strip state citizens of their constitutional rights. (snip) The gun people came first. By noon, thousands of them were on their way. From all over the East, hell, from all over America, Canada too, they converged on Western New York in pick-ups and SUVs and RVs and who knows what else, many of them bearing the banner, Chautauqua or Bust.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor apparently wants his Republican colleagues to pursue a “government can be good” approach to their politics rather than focusing so much on the size and voracious spending appetite of Washington. … Citing an unidentified congressional aide as its source, the (Wall Street) Journal said Cantor plans to touch on a host of existing policies and initiatives, from school choice to tax reform, to show how families nationwide would benefit more from Republican ideas rather than those offered by Democrats. …

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that he is willing to be the first Iranian sent into space on behalf of the nation’s space program. "I am ready to be the first human to be sent to space by Iranian scientists," Ahmadinejad said on Monday, adding that he is willing to sacrifice his life for the country’s space program. "Sending living things into space is the result of Iranian efforts and the dedication of thousands of Iranian scientists," he said, according to the Mehr news agency. Spain offers Eurofighters to Peru Spain's government has tendered a proposal to its Peruvian counterpart covering the possible sale of 18 Tranche 1 Eurofighter combat aircraft currently in service with its air force. Reportedly valued at €45 million ($61 million) per aircraft, the proposal was submitted at the request of the Peruvian defence ministry. If negotiations go forward, the intention would be to transfer all of the fighters to Peru within one year of a contract signature. The airframes have flown an average of around 600h each, sources suggest. Faced with a looming shortfall in its air defence capabilities, the...

The Gripen Proposition for the Dutch Air Force (Source: Saab’s Gripen blog; posted Feb. 3, 2013) 2013 will be an exciting year for the Dutch Air Force and for Dutch politics. The reason: there is a decision to be taken on the new fighter to replace the outdated F-16s, says a report in Een Vandaag. In a report that looks at the various options that are on offer, Kimo Demoed of Een Vandaag says that while the U.S. F-35 was the dream candidate for the Dutch Air Force for years, the JSF project is anything but smooth: "The costs are...

The Washington Post reports that the White House has released a photo of President Obama firing a weapon in what it claims is an exercise in skeet shooting that took place at Camp David sometime in August. Some of the president's supporters are making fun of people who have cast doubt that Obama likes to blast away at clay pigeons, an exercise that hitherto has never been revealed. One should not, according to these supporters, be suspicious of photos that show the president using fire arms in the middle of a debate about gun control. But the president and his...

The vice president then told a story to illustrate the "competence and capability" of the French military. "I often tell the story -- I’ve been in and out of Afghanistan and Iraq an awful lot, several dozen times; and I remember the first time I was in a forward operating base up in the hills above the Kunar Valley, the mountains. And I asked early on in the campaign, before I was Vice President -- I asked my -- the six Americans who I was standing with who they enjoyed standing most together with," said Biden. Within hours of the Jan. 8, 2011, mass shooting in Tucson that killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the local sheriff blamed the state’s lenient gun laws. “I have never been a proponent of letting everybody in the state carry weapons under any circumstances that they want -- and that's almost where we are,” complained Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik. “I think we’re the Tombstone of the United States of America.” Dupnik would prove to have a knack for intemperate remarks, and this one was historically inaccurate, but the frustration of law enforcement officials...
