  • Obama urges short-term budget fix, but GOP balks at more revenue

[snip] But Obama’s proposal would only postpone the $85 billion in automatic cuts, scheduled to take effect March 1, by a few months until a larger deal could be reached. [snip] The CBO projects, absent changes in spending and/or taxes, that federal debt held by the public will reach levels akin to 76 percent of the total economy, the largest percentage since 1950. It would tick up to 77 percent by the end of the decade and rise even further in years beyond that. Obama did not offer a specific proposal or release any new plans Tuesday. But he said...

In honor of President Reagan's 102nd birthday, a record number of governors declare "Ronald Reagan Day" in their states. Each year the Ronald Reagan Legacy Project asks governors from all 50 states to issue a proclamation declaring Feb. 6 "Ronald Reagan Day" in their respective states. Today, the Ronald Reagan Legacy Project proudly commends the 40 governors -- Republicans and Democrats alike -- who have chosen to honor President Reagan's 102nd birthday. "Ronald Reagan led America forward to defeat the threats to our prosperity of high taxes, inflation, and recession at home and a surging Soviet Empire abroad. He left...

Yes, the Dow and S&P500 hit new highs. But the rally’s hiding huge risks: “GDP turns negative as U.S. economic recovery stalls,” screams one headline. Another hears a “Ticking Time Bomb.” World’s central bankers at Davos warn cheap money’s blowing a new asset bubble. Dr. Doom, Marc Faber, “loves the high odds of a ‘big-time’ market crash.” Another, Nouriel Roubini, says “prepare for a perfect storm,” while Bond King Bill Gross sees a “credit supernova” dead ahead. Rally? Bubble? Crash? Global? Is the economy “peaking?” Are we on a long, slow-growth downhill slide to a 1% GDP? Is our banking...

Experts manufacture whatever facts an activist, politician, or bureaucrat needs."Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts," the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.) famously quipped. But when it comes to social and environmental problems nowadays, nearly everyone thinks he is entitled to his own facts, and an army of experts is on hand to manufacture and promote the carefully curated truths they require. The Progressive Era dream of empowering nonpartisan experts to solve social, economic, and environmental problems has failed spectacularly. What happened?Breakthrough Institute founders Ted Nordhaus and Michael Shellenberger grapple with this question in...

Referring to seriously ill patients as "tube people", Aso said he would feel bad knowing his life was draining the country's economy. Washington (CNN) -- As President Obama continues to push for new gun control measures, new FBI data shows that January was the second-highest month on record for gun background checks. FBI figures posted Tuesday show there were 2,495,400 background checks done through the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, known as NICS. The number was more than 1 million higher than any previous January. Also in January, 8,980 of the background checks resulted in gun purchase denials. U.S. law requires background checks for all people who try to buy firearms from federally licensed dealers.

In January, the New York State Legislature passed the Orwellian-sounding "SAFE" (Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement) Act. The act was debated in closed session without committee hearings, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed it into law within an hour of its passage -- after waiving the required three-day public comment period. Cuomo bragged that New York now has the "toughest assault weapons ban" in the country but claimed that the law respects the Second Amendment and preserves the rights of "hunters and sportsmen." The former is true; the latter is a bald-faced lie. Even if you do not live in New...

The path from believing in radical Islamist political ideology to plotting attacks in the homeland can be triggered by a number of factors, a new Congressional Research Service report finds. The report focuses on homegrown Islamic terrorism, which in itself is remarkable given the reluctance many in Washington have had to clearly naming a leading source of the terrorist threat. The title, "American Jihadist Terrorism: Combating a Complex Threat," uses the kind of language all-but-banned by the executive branch since 2008. Cabinet officials in the Obama administration have strained to avoid references to jihadist violence. But the Congressional Research Service...

Here was Jonathan Chait in New York magazine, etching the argument sharply almost a year ago: The modern GOP—the party of Nixon, Reagan and both Bushes—is staring down its own demographic extinction. New research shows that college loan debt is dramatically rising and becoming riskier than in past years.FICO (NYSE:FICO), a company that provides analytics including credit scores, recently conducted a study to examine changes in student loans since 2005. To little surprise, the results were quite sobering. The sky-rocketing costs of college have been outpacing inflation for years. As a result, more consumers are taking out student loans to pay for their education. FICO finds that approximately 12 million Americans had two or more open student...

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor attempted to project a softer Republican tone on immigration during a speech at the American Enterprise Institute on Tuesday, but indicated there is a ways to go until Republicans and Democrats agree on an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws. Cantor, the second-ranking House Republican, endorsed a path to citizenship for DREAMers, the undocumented young people brought to the United States as children.

LONDON — The House of Commons voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to approve a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in Britain, indicating that the bill is assured of passage as it moves through further legislative stages. But in a major setback for Prime Minister David Cameron, who championed the bill, it appeared that more than half of the lawmakers in his Conservative Party voted against the measure or abstained. After a six-hour debate, the Commons vote was 400 to 175 for the bill. It will have to pass in the House of Lords, where delaying tactics by opponents are possible, but Mr....

The Falklands Islands will be under Argentinian control within 20 years, the South American country's foreign minister, Héctor Timerman, has said in an interview with the Guardian. Visiting London for the first time, he ruled out a military solution to the 130-year-old sovereignty dispute but claimed the world increasingly recognised that the islands were a product of colonialism. He accused the British government of being motivated by a fanatical desire to hold on to the islands and claimed "the United Kingdom has never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity to find a solution for the Malvinas". He said: "I...

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House is declining to explain its criteria for directing drone attacks against American citizens working abroad with terrorists. A newly disclosed Justice Department memo says the administration doesn't need evidence of a pending attack. The document says only that the target must be involved in ongoing plotting against the United States. White House spokesman Jay Carney wouldn't discuss the memo in detail. He said President Barack Obama takes seriously his responsibility to protect the United States and its citizens. Carney said drone strikes are legal and that great care is taken to avoid the loss...

President Obama's health care law will push 7 million people out of their job-based insurance coverage — nearly twice the previous estimate, according to the latest estimates from the Congressional Budget Office released Tuesday. CBO said that this year's tax cuts have changed the incentives for businesses and made it less attractive to pay for insurance, meaning fewer will decide to do so. Instead, they'll choose to pay a penalty to the government, totaling $13 billion in higher fees over the next decade. But the non-partisan agency also expects fewer people to have to pay individual penalties to the IRS...

(Newser) – The NYPD detained the equivalent of 8.6% of all New Yorkers as part of its controversial "stop and frisk" program in 2011, and almost all of them were minorities, according to a statistical breakdown the department released last night. All told, police stopped a record 685,724 people, and nearly 90% of them were either black or Hispanic, the New York Post reports. Only 9% were white and 4% Asian. In many places, the racial disparity was even worse. In the two precincts that saw the most stops, Brooklyn's 75th and 73rd, 97% and 98% of cases, respectively, involved...
