  • Obama Administration Offers Direct Talks with Iran

On Saturday, the Obama administration’s efforts to maintain the fantasy that diplomatic efforts will get Iran to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons was again on display for all the world to see, courtesy of Vice President Joe Biden. During a speech at the Munich Security Conference, Biden contended that the United States “would be prepared to meet bilaterally with the Iranian leadership.” ”There has to be an agenda that they are prepared to speak to,” Biden added. “We are not just prepared to do it for the exercise.” The Iranians, meanwhile, are hailing the new approach the Obama administration...

In 1998, Chuck Hagel attempted to block the appointment of James Hormel as ambassador to Luxemburg on the grounds that Hormel was “openly and aggressively gay.” Fourteen years later, on the heels of his own political appointment as Department of Defense (DOD) chief, Hagel issued an apology to Hormel calling his remarks “insensitive” and not reflective of his current views on LGBT issues. Of course the timing of Hagel’s “apology” was impeccable. One could even say expedient and likely done not on his own initiative but at the behest of the White House. But Hagel’s sudden reversal on gay issues...

Whether playing the race card, the class card, or the sexism card, any and every means is invoked to demonize the opposition. By creating a climate of fear, ordinary Americans are...

Energy: The former Golden State is floating in debt, even as it sits on two-thirds of America's shale oil reserves locked in a formation four times the size of the one that sparked North Dakota's economic boom. North Dakota is now the largest oil producer in the country after Texas with a monthly oil output of about 20 million barrels. North Dakota's oil boom accounts for 11% of U.S. oil production, and it is the impetus behind the state's $3.8 billion surplus and an unemployment rate of just 3.2%, the lowest in the nation. Kids who are ten years old today should be able to work until the age of 80. In return, they won’t need to work more than 25 hours per week when they become adults,” Vaupel told Science Nordic. “In the 20th century we had a redistribution of wealth. I believe that in...

Obamacare outlawed underwriting by health insurance companies. In other words, if we are diagnosed with cancer, run 10Ks, have diabetes or a family history of heart attacks, we all pay the same price. Fine. But there is one big exception. Smokers, who can be charged a huge insurance surcharge for their unhealthy habit. **SNIP** This financial stick is entirely political. Notice we never hear experts wanting to “punish” the promiscuous for the cost burden they inflict on the health care system. Yet people who sleep around, like smokers and the obese, cost the rest of us plenty–what with promiscuity leading...

Charlottesville, Va., has become the first city in the United States to formally pass an anti-drone resolution. The resolution, passed Monday, "calls on the United States Congress and the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Virginia to adopt legislation prohibiting information obtained from the domestic use of drones from being introduced into a Federal or State court," and "pledges to abstain from similar uses with city-owned, leased, or borrowed drones." The resolution passed by a 3-2 vote and was brought to the city council by activist David Swanson and the Rutherford Institute, a progressive civil liberties group based ACA premium...

“I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” —Thomas Jefferson Free speech is under attack in the West, and it’s under attack from abroad. For years radical Islamists have targeted embassies abroad and individuals at home for “insulting” the Prophet Muhammad. And now diplomats and heads of state from Islamist countries are using international oganizations to pressure the West to criminalize blasphemy and are even lobbying for a global censorship regime. The most recent assault began in Cairo on September 11, 2012, when a deranged mob attacked the...
  • Cerabino: Florida sheriffs edge closer to law interpreting than law enforcing

I know it’s illegal to impersonate a law-enforcement officer. But what happens when a law-enforcement officer impersonates a judge? I’m talking about the recent proclamation from the Florida Sheriff’s Association announcing that its members “will not not assist, support, or condone any unconstitutional infringement” of the Second Amendment’s right to bear arms. The timing of the proclamation coincided with efforts by President Barack Obama and some members of Congress to advocate for gun regulations that ban the sale of military-style assault weapons, limit rounds of ammunition in clips, and eliminate loopholes in background checks for gun sales. If those measures,...

A Philadelphia woman was arrested today along with 12 others in what federal authorities call "one of the largest" credit card fraud schemes ever. --snip-- Essentially, the enterprise worked like this, according to the complaint: Members of the group would create false identities through a series of documents, then create a false profile for the major credit bureaus. Next, the group would, "pump up" the credit by providing false information to the credit bureaus from fake companies. The sham companies existed only to make it appear that the fictional people had excellent credit. Finally, members of the group would run...
  • Why a Permanent Democratic Majority Is Not a Demographic Inevitability (Part One: Antecedents)

Following Barack Obama’s victory over Mitt Romney a certain argument became ubiquitous: the argument from demographic inevitability. That the Republican Party, absent deep-seated changes that are all but unimaginable, is in for a generation or more of electoral doom. Indeed the argument was being made long before the votes were even cast. Here was Jonathan Chait in New York magazine, etching the argument sharply almost a year ago: The modern GOP—the party of Nixon, Reagan and both Bushes—is staring down its own demographic extinction. Right-wing warnings of impending tyranny express, in hyperbolic form, well-grounded dread: that conservative America will soon...

Any immigration package in which current illegal immigrants are made eligible for ObamaCare — in the form of either exchanges or Medicaid — could increase costs to the federal government by between $120 billion to $200 billion in its first decade, according to internal calculations by the Republican side of the Senate Budget Committee that were obtained exclusively by The Daily Caller. GOP Senate Budget Committee staffers explained to TheDC that the estimates assume that the law’s provision capping total spending on exchange subsidies, which is set to begin in 2019, is enforced. However, should the provision fall by the...

A former Boy Scout leader has been charged with sodomizing a boy in his troop who was under the age of 13. The abuse took place in 2005, according to court documents, but the victim, now an adult, waited several years before coming forward, reported WHSV-TV in Harrisonburg, Va. The BSA’s Stonewall Jackson Area Council released a prepared statement after the arrest. “The abuse of anyone, especially a child, is intolerable and our thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who may be a victim of this type of behavior,” the statement said. ‘The behavior included in these allegations runs...

Nobel Prize winning “economist” Paul Krugman spoke at Sixth & I Historic Synagogue in Washington, D.C. last week. During the Q&A session following the lecture, an audience member asked him about the rising national debt. Earlier in the evening, Krugman had already vocalized his satisfaction at President Obama’s apparent lack of concern over the exploding cumulative deficit. However, in a moment of brutal honesty, the esteemed Princeton professor revealed his long term prognosis. According to the professor: Eventually we do have a problem. That the population is getting older, health care costs are rising…there is this question of how we’re...
