  • Brennan defends drone strikes, even on Americans

CIA Director-designate John Brennan strongly defended anti-terror attacks by unmanned drones Thursday under close questioning at a protest-disrupted confirmation hearing. On a second controversial topic, he said that after years of reading classified intelligence reports he still does not know if waterboarding has yielded useful information. Despite what he called a public misimpression, Brennan told the Senate Intelligence Committee that drone strikes are used only against targets planning to carry out attacks against the United States, never as retribution for an earlier one. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” he declared. Referring to one American citizen killed by a...

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley wants state lawmakers to consider passing legislation that would require residents to obtain a license before purchasing a handgun. Such a law would be an impediment to a constitutional guarantee for which there is no such requirement. I find it interesting that liberals attack the requirement that a person needs to show identification in order to vote, but they will put multiple restrictions on people who have a right to keep and bear arms as set down in the Constitution.Unlike the Second Amendment, there is no absolute right to vote. Consider the 26th Amendment that was...

As we’ve reported several times before, one of the leading proponents of the teacher/political activist model is Bob Peterson, president of the Milwaukee Teachers' Education Association. The outspoken union leader recently laid out his educational strategy during remarks to a gathering of the British Columbia Teacher Federation. His words are plain and his intentions are frighteningly clear. He wants schools to stop teaching kids how to think and start teaching them what to think. “We do care about people,” Peterson told his audience near the end if his presentation. “We wouldn’t have gone into teaching if we didn’t care about...

SPRINGFIELD, ILL. Gov. Pat Quinn is renewing his call for an assault weapons ban in Illinois. The Chicago Democrat promoted the idea during his annual State of the State address on Wednesday. He asked lawmakers to move forward with strong public safety legislation. He says Illinois must prohibit the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines. Smack in the middle of where a D.C. developer hopes to build apartments on the Forest Hills-Chalfant border stands a small brick building adorned with a towering steel orb. The four-story weathered object, which resembles a giant light bulb, is the genesis of the Westinghouse Electric Corp.'s foray into nuclear power — a 1937 van de Graaff particle accelerator, the world's first industrial atom smasher. “Westinghouse was really in the vanguard of nuclear power,” said Cynthia Kelly, president of the Washington-based Atomic Heritage Foundation. “It's great that they kept (the accelerator.) What's with Barney Frank and his odd obsession with a Henny Youngman line that—had virtually any other politician used it—would result in him being accused of the worst kind of misogyny? Back in 2011, I noted that, appearing on Morning Joe, Frank had quoted the hoary Henny line: "How's your wife? Compared to what?" Yet there was Barney again this evening, this time on Al Sharpton's MSNBC show, breaking out the identical line. Really: what gives? And imagine the feminist outrage if, say, Mitt Romney had dared used the line during his presidential campaign. View the video here.

The drag to Gross Domestic Product caused by cuts in defense spending in the fourth quarter of 2012 could be just the beginning of a long, painful process, according to economic experts. GDP fell by 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter, the first such negative growth since 2009 and an economic wet blanket after a 3.1 percent increase in the previous quarter. A 22 percent drop in government defense spending was blamed for much of the decline. The fourth-quarter drop came as those in the Pentagon waited to see if Congress would reach a deal to avoid sequestration by the...

Is your three-year-old preschooler chanting ‘union power’ these days? She might, if author Innosanto Nagara has his way. Nagara wrote A is for Activist, a book supposedly geared for the children of the “99 percent.” In other words, a new vehicle has been developed for leftists to begin indoctrinating children. “It’s pretty awesome to hear a three-year-old saying ‘union power,’” Nagara said in a YES! magazine interview. The Justice Department memo makes a case for the legality of drone strikes to kill Americans abroad who pose an “imminent threat of violent attack.” This is a reference to “self-defense.” Brennan was the first administration official to publicly acknowledge drone strikes in a speech last year, calling them “consistent with the inherent right of self-defense.” The “inherent right of self-defense” is another clear reference to moral reasoning on war as represented by Just War theory. The problem is, the Justice Department memo doesn’t limit the legality argument to what would be commonly understood as “imminent threat” and thus the...

An Egyptian Salafi preacher said raping and sexually harassing women protesters in Cairo’s Tahrir Square is justified, calling them “crusaders” who “have no shame, no fear and not even feminism.” In an online video posted Wednesday, Ahmad Mahmoud Abdullah, known as “Abu Islam” and owner of the private television channel of “al-Ummah,” said these women are no red line. “They tell you women are a red line. They tell you that naked women -- who are going to Tahrir Square because they want to be raped -- are a red line! And they ask Mursi and the Brotherhood to leave...

(CNSNews.com) - Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, issued a statement on Thursday signaling to the Obama Administration that the bishops will not make a separate deal to exempt Catholic institutions from an Obamacare mandate that requires health-care plans to cover sterilizations, contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs that leaves lay Catholic business owners and individual employees still subject to the mandate. “In obedience to our Judeo-Christian heritage, we have consistently taught our people to live their lives during the week to reflect the same beliefs that they proclaim on the Sabbath,” said Cardinal...

NASA may have found the man they are looking for. And he is Canadian. Chris Hadfield, retired Royal Canadian Air Force colonel and current Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut, has been busy. Since last December, he has been orbiting the Earth aboard the International Space Station’s (ISS), in company with American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts. In March, he will be the first Canadian to take command. Hadfield has been engaged in high-tech experiments and research. But he’s been doing a lot more than that: Taking stunning photos of the Earth, tweeting about life in space and getting chummy via Twitter...

LAS VEGAS -- One month and one day after the elementary-school massacre that threatens to change the American gun industry, a group based where that atrocity took place mixed defiance with discretion Tuesday in opening the doors to the world's largest gun show. More than 60,000 gun dealers, retailers and apparel makers are in Las Vegas this week for the annual Shooting Hunting Outdoor Trade convention, hosted by the National Shooting Sports Foundation of Newtown. The four-day "SHOT Show" is not for the public -- it's for those who sell to the public.
  • GOP: MENENDEZ SPENDING 87% OF WEALTH TO PAY FOR FLIGHTS RAISES QUESTIONS

Republican National Committee spokesman Sean Spicer told Breitbart News that the facts don't all add up in New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez’s story when it comes to his reimbursement of flights aboard a Democratic mega-donor's private jet. Spicer specifically questions the issues surrounding how Menendez paid such a huge chunk out of his pocket for the flights. “The notion that anyone would have spent such a massive percent of their assets on previously unreported flights until it was discovered begs countless questions,” Spicer said in an email. On Tuesday, the National Journal reported that Menendez spent up to 87...

(CNSNews.com) - Retired Army Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin--formerly commander of U.S. Special Forces Command and deputy undersecretary of defense for intelligence—told CNSNews.com that, if it had been asked, the Defense Department could have sent a plane to Libya on Sept. 11, 2012, to transport a rescue team of U.S. security personnel that instead ended up taking a chartered private plane from Tripoli to Benghazi that night. “There is no question that we could have moved an airplane in there and we could have also put boots on the ground at the embassy,” Gen. Boykin told CNSNews.com. “State should have...

It is easy to understand why Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (AZ) made a speech in support of gun control. She remembers that a deranged individual used a firearm to cripple her for life, but she also needs to remember that there were two gun-wielding individuals involved in the incident. The second gunman, Joseph Zamudio, wrote Giffords and Jared Lee Loughner's other victims a blank check on the spot for any amount up to and including his life. Even though Zamudio had a permit to carry a concealed weapon, he had no legal obligation whatsoever to walk into a situation that involved...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – In 2013, no one expects to see a man dressed in a Ku Klux Clan robe mid-morning in Center City, Philadelphia. “I think that’s nonsense,” said one woman on the street. “He needs to be committed to the jail system,” said another onlooker. The man, who stood on the corner of 13th and Filbert on Tuesday, is not out to lynch or kill black people. In fact, he is black. Thirty-five-year-old Sixx King says he’s using the offensive symbol to highlight a serious problem: black on black crime. “We’re bringing awareness to the black hypocrisy, complacency and...
