All semi-automatic rifles with detachable magazines would be banned, all guns would be registered and no ammunition could be bought without a special permit in California under a sweeping list of bills rolled out Thursday by state Senate Democrats. The 10-bill package constitutes the single largest gun control push in decades in the Golden State, which already boasts some of the nation's strictest gun laws. It joins equally controversial proposals from Assembly Democrats that would regulate and tax ammunition sales and consider taking the state's 166,000 registered assault weapons from their owners. This first unified California plan comes less than...

Imagine if President George W. Bush or senior members of his administration asserted that they had the power to assassinate any person, including American citizens on American soil, because they merely suspected them of being involved in a terrorist plot. Now, imagine that they went a step further and claimed that this broad new power was not subject to any oversight by Congress or the judiciary or international law. A lot of left-wingers would be apoplectic. And they would be right. Sadly, a Democratic president, Barack Obama, and senior national security officials in his administration appear to be wielding just...

National Public Radio is so biased isn’t not even funny anymore. Consider the spin on this story by WDET, the Detroit-area affiliate of NPR: Wayne State Univesrity’s [sic] faculty union is hoping to protect its members from the impact of Michigan’s right-to-work law, which takes effect in the spring. The union wants the university to lock dues into its next contract for 10 years, to shield members from the law banning mandatory membership and fees as a condition of employment. Gee, how thoughtful. The union is trying to “protect” its members from making a choice. And the union is going...

When a group of farmers handed out free fruit and veg in front of the Ministry of Agriculture in Athens Wednesday, they couldn't have predicted the ensuing chaos. In just two hours hoardes of hungry Greeks scrabbled to get their share of 50 tons of hand-outs, which led to skirmishes in the streets and comparisons with Nazi occupied Greece in the World War II. Families and the unemployed queued up to catch rations given out from vans. "Look", an old man gestured on local TV, "they're pulling supplies out of the trucks. It's like war time." Remember Julia, the mythical moocher created by the Obama campaign to show the joys of government dependency? As illustrated by this Ramirez cartoon, Julia symbolizes the entitlement mentality. Unfortunately, there are many real-life Julias.I wrote a couple of years ago about Olga, a Greek woman who petulantly believed that government was responsible for her empty life. But we don’t know any details about Olga other than her desire to mooch, so the best real-world examples of Julia may be from England. WASHINGTON -- The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released a gloomy report this week about the government's debt and the ailing economy. And it's worse than the Obama administration has led us to believe. The first graph in the CBO's "Budget and Economic Outlook" tells us what most economists already knew, but that the White House refuses to acknowledge: "Economic growth will remain slow this year ..." By "slow," Congress' nonpartisan forecasting agency means the economy will grow by "just 1.4 percent," which means it's barely moving, stuck in a paralytic trance where relatively few jobs are created and our country...

American women have been cleared for combat, but the generals at the Pentagon only think they are the very model of the modern major general. Women have been locked in combat since Adam and Eve were thrown out of the Garden of Eden. Men and women have been fighting the unending war between the sexes since, giving no quarter, but happily taking each other prisoner. Today the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force unveiled a "comprehensive set of policy principles designed to reduce gun violence while respecting the 2nd Amendment Rights of law-abiding Americans." What is the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force? A bunch of Democrats appointed by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and led by Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.) with the assistance of 11 (!) "vice chairs." Their mission: to "reduce and prevent gun violence while also protecting the rights of law-abiding individuals without a history of dangerous mental illness to own legitimate firearms for legitimate purposes." Are the 12 chairs of...

United States --(Ammoland.com)- Yesterday, California politicians held a press conference to introduce the most draconian gun control civilian disarmament bill seen to date in this country. Seeking to exploit the tragedy of Newtown to achieve a political end, lawmakers introduced a bill that is completely filled with unconstitutional and extreme measures aimed at nothing other than the disarmament of law abiding Americans. The list includes placing extreme financial burdens on gun owners by requiring them to pay what are essentially “poll taxes” on firearms and ammunition purchases as well as requiring liability insurance, annual certifications, and licensing of gun ownership....

When someone says “First Amendment” you immediately think about your right to free speech, or perhaps freedom of religion. The First Amendment actually goes beyond that. For those of you who attended government schools, it’s time for a refresher. Here’s the actual wording: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” Most people have a handle on the free speech, freedom of religion...

Tests on Findus beef lasagne have revealed that some of the ready meals were made entirely from horsemeat. Findus analysed 18 of its beef lasagne products and found 11 meals contained between 60% and 100% horsemeat, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said. There is no evidence to suggest the horsemeat found in the Findus beef lasagne is a food safety risk, the FSA said. However, the agency has ordered urgent tests on the lasagne for the veterinary drug phenylbutazone. Meat from animals treated with "bute" is not allowed to enter the food chain in Britain as it may pose a...

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) says Karl Rove and American Crossroads are out to get him and his supporters should pony up to stop them. Keying off a quote from Crossroads President Steven Law in Sunday’s New York Times, the likely Iowa Senate candidate sent an email to supporters Thursday seeking cash for a potential campaign. “I have not made a decision on this matter, but already Karl Rove and his army have launched a crusade against me,” King writes. Polls show that King would enter the race as the clear frontrunner in the GOP primary, but that he would trail...

Critics of photo ID and other laws cracking down on voter fraud claim they’re unnecessary because fraud is nonexistent. Brennan Center attorneys Michael Waldman and Justin Levitt claimed last year: “A person casting two votes risks jail time and a fine for minimal gain. Proven voter fraud, statistically, happens about as often as death by lightning strike.” Well, lightning is suddenly all over Cincinnati, Ohio. The Hamilton County Board of Elections is investigating 19 possible cases of alleged voter fraud that occurred when Ohio was a focal point of the 2012 presidential election. A total of 19 voters and nine...
