Aides to former Democratic Vice President Al Gore have failed to respond to a recent Al-Jazeera TV broadcast, in which a top imam affirmed the death penalty for anyone who quits Islam. Gore sold his Current TV network to Al-Jazeera, which now plans to extend its broadcast into the United States this summer, according to Ashok Sinha, vice president of corporate communications at Current TV/Al-Jazeera America.

What started as a condescending “cautionary tale” about Sarah Palin’s mixing of celebrity and politics quickly became a cautionary tale about mixing contempt for Sarah Palin with desperation for the traffic her name will generate. Suzi Parker of the Washington Post‘s She the People blog reported Tuesday that Palin, in an attempt to “stay relevant,” would join the Al Jazeera America network, to “reach millions of devoutly religious people.” The only problem is the report comes from “The Daily Currant,” a parody site whose lead story today is “Catholic Church considering Jerry Sandusky for Pope.” A sampling of the original...
  • Women of The Wall, Silverman's Sister Arrested at Kotel

Ten women participating in a women's prayer service at the Western Wall were arrested for wearing prayer shawls. Among those arrested Monday morning as they prayed with hundreds of worshipers and supporters were Israeli-American Rabbi Susan Silverman, sister of the comedian Sarah Silverman, and her 17-year-old daughter, Hallel Abramovitz; Anat Hoffman, chairwoman of the Women of the Wall, who has been arrested several times in recent months; and two U.S. rabbis, Debra Cantor of B'nai Tikvoh-Sholom in Bloomfield, Conn., and Robin Fryer Bodzin of the Israel Center of Conservative Judaism in New York City. The women had gathered at the...

Mr. Nugent, who said last year that Mr. Obamas re-election would destroy America, was invited to the annual address to Congress by Rep. Steve Stockman (R., Texas), who said Mr. Nugent would have a lot to say after the speech. Mr. Nugent will be sharing the gallery with hundreds of other guests, including some two dozen people who have been shot or lost relatives to gun violence and are rooting for Mr. Obama to follow through on a gun-control agenda. I will remain respectful in the decorum department, but I know what self-evident truths are and I know what the...
  • 'Femen' activists go topless [in Paris's Notre Dame] to hail pope's resignation

Eight feminists flashed their breasts in the heart of Paris's Notre Dame cathedral on Tuesday to celebrate Pope Benedict XVI's shock resignation announcement. The members of the Femen movement entered the Gothic cathedral dressed in long coats which they whipped off inside while ringing three bells near the altar. "Pope no more!" they cried. "No more homophobe" and "Bye bye Benedict!" Scandalised visitors voiced their disapproval. "This is a sacred place, you can't strip here," said a Frenchwoman....

Even former Philadelphia Police Lt. Jonathan Josey called the video "disturbing." The video of him swinging at and decking a woman at a Fairhill street party after last year's Puerto Rican Day parade was enough to end his decorated 19-year police career and get him charged with simple assault. But after a three-hour nonjury trial Tuesday, in which Josey testified that he accidentally hit Aida Guzman while trying to knock a beer bottle from her hand, a troubled-looking Municipal Court Judge Patrick F. Dugan seemed uncertain. Saying he "needed more time to digest this," Dugan said he would announce his...

According to a threat posted on Anonymous information website Anon, the loosely banded hacker collective will attempt to disrupt the State of the Union address Tuesday by preventing it from being broadcast online. **SNIP** The post cites a litany of offenses as motive for the threatened attack, from "tyrannical" legislation to the treatment of Internet heroes like Aaron Swartz and Bradley Manning. It goes on to state that hackers will "form a virtual blockade between Capitol Hill and the Internet," although onlookers may be skeptical of the group's ability to do this. A recent campaign against Israel during...

President Barack Obama will pledge that the new proposals in his State of the Union address Tuesday aimed at boosting still-struggling middle class Americans will not expand the deficit. Nothing Im proposing tonight should increase our deficit by a single dime, Obama will say, according to advance excerpts of the speech provided by the White House, which offered no details of the proposals. Its not a bigger government we need, but a smarter government that sets priorities and invests in broad-based growth. The White House has previously said the speech will include new initiatives in manufacturing, infrastructure, education...

With less than three weeks to go before automatic governmentwide budget cuts, the entire leadership team at the Pentagon on Tuesday implored the Senate Armed Services Committee to cancel sequestration and adjust the continuing resolution set to run out March 27. In an emotional hearing that prompted lawmakers to criticize their own and blast President Obamas leadership, members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and top civilian officials laid out details of the harm across-the-board budget cuts would inflict on the nations military readiness and long-term effectiveness. Military readiness is in jeopardy due to the convergence of unprecedented budget...

Two hospice care centers are struggling to make ends meet, and Obamacares cuts to Medicare are to blame. Hospiceshealth care facilities for the terminally illalong with other Medicare providers are facing Medicare pay cuts. Of the $716 billion in payment reductions, hospice care was hit by a $17 billion payment cut from 2013 to 2022. Now, contrary to all of the misleading claims, this effect is already beginning. San Diego Hospice recently laid off 260 workers, closed a 24-bed hospital, and has recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. San Diego Hospices financial condition is attributed mainly to reduced Medicare reimbursement,...

  • Cyprus "Radical Rescue" Proposal Proves Greece Not Unique

Cyprus is about to prove what anyone with common sense already knew, that Greece will not be the only country requiring haircuts on sovereign bonds. Today the Financial Times posted news of a Radical rescue proposal for Cyprus A radical new option for the financial rescue of Cyprus would force losses on uninsured depositors in Cypriot banks, as well as investors in the countrys sovereign bonds, according to a confidential memorandum prepared ahead of Mondays meeting of eurozone finance ministers. The proposal for a bail-in of investors and depositors, and drastic shrinking of the Cypriot banking sector, is one of...

Silence golden for market economy ^ | February 11, 2013 | By Donald J. Boudreaux
One of the market economy's greatest flaws is the silence it maintains when it is working relatively flawlessly. When the market stumbles, though or when it's tripped up by unwise government interventions a great clamor is heard. Unemployment rises, stock prices and exchange rates plummet, and tales abound of this hardship and that lost dream. Pundits proclaim loudly that the unreliable market must be corrected or tamed by the wisdom and prudence of politicians. But when the market works smoothly as it typically does hardly anyone notices. We take its successes for granted. That's the...

Senator Marco Rubio appeared on Fox News show to discuss gun control. Toward the end of the segment, he made a very aggressive statement about the Lefts view of the Second Amendment. I think that the President is not a believer in the Second Amendment, although he states that he is, said Rubio. ... The prospect of four more years of Barack Obama in the White House has caused several conservative voices (among them, The Wall Street Journals Daniel Henninger, Fox News commentator Charles Krauthammer, and noted Ronald Reagan scholar Paul Kengor) to opine that President Obamas second term portends the passing of the Reagan era, the reversal of his pro-growth policies and the attempted burial of Reagans credo, government is the problem. None of this is news. It is a given that Obama and his fellow progressives reject Reagans values and philosophy. They will continue to try to expand government. There is, however,...

When a reporter once asked Mark Twain about the rumor of his death, or if Twain was on his deathbed, Twain famously responded “the report of my death has been greatly exaggerated.”  Well, the same can be said about Uncle Sam’s U.S. dollar.  Just when the last shovel of dirt was to be thrown on the greenback’s grave, a hand is raised and a few faint sounds are heard that say “not so fast.”  In 2009, the Head of the Central Bank of China called for the U.S. dollar to be replaced.  Just think about it for a moment, the...
