  • Napolitano: These sequester cuts will make it tougher to secure the border and fight terrorism

    02/26/2013 7:38:44 PM PST · by chessplayer · 64 replies
And there it is: The ultimate panic-inducing cherry on top of the sequester-scaremongering sundae. Apart from the devastating, eviscerating, meat-cleaving threats of flight delays, park closures, and whooping cough, the existential threat that is the dreaded sequesteration is going to make it much more difficult for the Department of Homeland Security to perform one of its primary functions: Thwarting terrorism. Via WaPo: Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano warned Monday that her agency would be forced to furlough 5,000 border control agents under mandatory spending cuts, likely allowing more illegal immigrants into the country and potentially compromising national security. Napolitano said...

Liberals may often accuse conservatives of being racist for making particular criticisms of Obama, but at least one liberal group appears to be more than willing to delve into actual racism when it comes to opposing a prominent Republican. The hitch? They’re not attacking the politician himself in this case. They’re attacking his wife. The politician in question is Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who happens to be married to former Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao. Chao, who is ethnically Chinese, but was born in Thaiwan, has been a fairly quiet figure relative to McConnell and hasn’t been known...

PHOENIX - A bill in front of the city council would change the non-discrimination law in Phoenix, protecting Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgender people. Essentially, the proposal prohibits discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations, such as restaurants and hotels. But, opponents have dubbed it, the "Bathroom Bill", because, if approved, a man could follow a woman into the bathroom by claiming to be transgender. Supporters say they despise the nickname, claiming it's a fear-mongering lie created by critics of the bill. “They can swing this, that's why they do this because they know if they can get people to...

Hunger is a force to be reckoned with; it is a motion that cannot be stopped unless it is quenched. But once hunger is sated, it comes again, often more urgently than before. This applies to hunger, in the typical sense, but also the hunger for life, money, faith and power. Once a taste is in your mouth, more is needed to fulfill you the following round. Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, has such a hunger. He has a complex need for power that doesn’t ever seem to be sated. This power hunger has reared it’s ugly head...

A Christian pastor was recently slaughtered in the Muslim-majority African nation of Tanzania. While butchering Christian minorities is becoming increasingly common in that part of the Muslim world, the context for this latest slaughter is somewhat different than the usual forms of Christian persecution under Islam—such as allegations of “blaspheming” the name of Muslim prophet Muhammad. And yet, as in most forms of modern-day Muslim attacks on Christians, it too fits patterns and precedents. The "national conversation" Americans demanded after the Dec. 14 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre is fast turning into a diatribe hinged — in some instances unhinged — on government "doing something," no matter how meaningless or expensive. Increasingly, proponents of stricter gun laws and "mental-health reform" claim their demands are rooted in "common sense," a strategy that attempts to pre-empt reasoned debate that surely would unmask them as counterproductive, unaffordable, unenforceable or useless. When the cost of their proposals is challenged, the do-something crowd quickly deploys its "if-it-saves-one-life" excuse and demonizes its critics as enablers of future mass shootings. Still,...

It’s official. Former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel is our new Secretary of Defense. What challenges does he face as he takes over the Defense Department? Here's the truth: a broken Pentagon is in desperate need of an overhaul. Let’s start with the draconian budget reductions facing DoD as the “sequester” looms. If the sequester happens this week it will, for better or worse, have a direct impact on a full spectrum of Pentagon operations. For starters, the sequester will cut about $1 trillion dollars out of the Pentagon budget. That money will disappear without any considerations regarding either national security...

OK, go ahead and get the "Where's my global warming?" jokes out of your system. With the U.S. Midwest trudging through its second blizzard in a week, we understand. But while it may seem contradictory at first, scientists say bigger blizzards fit the pattern they expect to see from a changing climate. The immediate meteorological cause of the back-to-back snowstorms is a colder-than-normal mass of air that's been hovering over the central United States, combined with an amped-up jet stream that's been dipping south from Canada. That makes conditions ripe for major snowstorms after a warmer-than-normal January for most of...

The weapons began reaching rebels in December via shipments shuttled through Jordan, officials said, and have been a factor in the rebels’ small tactical gains this winter against the army and militias loyal to Mr. Assad. Washington’s role in the shipments, if any, is not clear. Officials in Europe and the...

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have released “several hundred” immigrants from deportation centers across the country, saying the move is an effort to cut costs ahead of budget cuts due to hit later this week. Announcing the news Tuesday, ICE officials said that the immigrants were released under supervision and continue to face deportation. After reviewing hundreds of cases, those released were considered low-risk and “noncriminal,” officials said. The releases took place over the last week and were an effort “to ensure detention levels stay within ICE's current budget,” said ICE spokeswoman Gillian Christiansen, citing uncertainty caused by a budget...

National Black Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Harry C. Alford told The Daily Caller that he ”ignored” President Obama’s “spread the wealth” comment in 2008 and “had hopes” for him “because he was black.” “I don’t really support him too well and he knows it and that’s a badge of honor. He’s bad. He’s bad and I supported him. I voted for him the first time around. I had hopes because he was black. Shame on me,” Alford told TheDC at the National Press Club after an anti-gun control news conference. “Then when he started doing all these executive...

President Barack Obama said Tuesday that the nation will now have the defense secretary it needs. "With the bipartisan confirmation of Chuck Hagel as our next Secretary of Defense, we will have the defense secretary our nation needs and the leader our troops deserve," he said in a statement. "From the moment he volunteered for military service in Vietnam, Chuck has devoted his life to keeping America secure and our armed forces strong. An American patriot who fought and bled for our country, he understands our sacred obligations to our service members, military families and veterans.

President Obama took his campaign to warn about looming spending cuts on the road Tuesday, using a Virginia shipyard as a backdrop to his message that Congress' failure to act will cost jobs. But back in Washington, Republicans said the president's theatrics aren't doing any good -- and that the American people would be better served if Obama worked with Congress on a viable alternative. "The spending cuts are going to happen and the option now for the president is, do you want to work for a different way for these savings to be achieved?" Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., said....

WASHINGTON -- US Vice President Joe Biden will address the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's annual conference opening this weekend, according to AIPAC officials. Biden will be the highest-ranking representative of the government to participate in the three-day convention, but several other legislative leaders are also slated to address the gathering, including House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who is still working on forming a governing coalition and will be receiving US President Barack Obama in Israel later in the month, will not be in attendance. But he will address the...

WASHINGTON — Kentucky Senator Rand Paul said his support for a filibuster against Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel never meant that he would vote against Hagel's confirmation. "I voted no because I wanted more information and I think that part of what the Senate does is try to get information about the nominees," Paul told reporters in the basement of the Capitol after Hagel's confirmation Tuesday. "I've said all along that I give the president some prerogative in choosing his political appointees." "There are many things I disagree with Chuck Hagel on, there are many things I disagree with John Kerry...

'What does Hollywood have against the British? Once again on Oscar night, Tinsel Town gave warmly to us with one hand — while cynically taking away with the other. The good news is that at least nine Britons will fly back across the Atlantic with coveted golden statues. But the bad news is that Argo — the movie that won Best Film — is yet another piece of Hollywood’s Brit-bashing junk history that casts us in a poor light.'

'When the world was first introduced to Wonky the puppy earlier this month, she cut a pitiful figure. The little Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross was given the unusual name because of severe problems with her malformed front legs, which failed to develop after she was separated from her mother. But now, after intense physiotherapy, the 12-week-old has quickly made a fantastic recovery. Where once she walked awkwardly on bent joints, she can now bound along normally, her tail wagging as she goes.'
