  • ‘Degrading’ virginity tests on women must stop, Quebec doctors’ group urges

Montreal — The Quebec college of physicians has issued a warning to doctors to stop performing virginity tests, a practice linked to bridal purity and family honour. Gynecological exams for virginity certificates contravene the profession’s code of ethics on several grounds, including breaching patient confidentiality, said Charles Bernard, president of the Collège des médecins, in an interview. The practise is outrageous, repugnant, irrelevant and unacceptable, he said. “Imagine a doctor who does a gynecological examination with the sole purpose of … it goes beyond the imagination. And it’s degrading to women,” Dr. Bernard said. The College was responding to a...

In its first 11 days of operation, Oct. 1 through Friday, HealthSource RI fielded 62,000 unique website visits. Of these visitors, about 5,500 started accounts (created a username and password) and 1,698 completed their applications and selected a health insurance plan. These numbers were released Saturday by Christine C. Ferguson, director of the agency. HealthSource RI is not saying how many of the 1,698 who completed applications are small businesses (a key focus of the exchange) nor how many qualified for Medicaid.

A novel device that uses only sunlight and wastewater to produce hydrogen gas could provide a sustainable energy source while improving the efficiency of wastewater treatment. A research team led by Yat Li, assoc. prof. of chemistry at the Univ. of California, Santa Cruz, developed the solar-microbial device and reported their results in ACS Nano. The hybrid device combines a microbial fuel cell (MFC) and a type of solar cell called a photoelectrochemical cell (PEC). In the MFC component, bacteria degrade organic matter in the wastewater, generating electricity in the process. The biologically generated electricity is delivered to the PEC...

When the blind victim gets to the suspect, the unidentified man strikes him and knocks him to the ground, then proceeds to kick and stomp on him, causing injuries to his face and head as he lay helpless on the ground, police said. After the assault, the suspect picked up a dark-colored backpack and walked away south on Wayne. The surveillance video shows one person standing on...

My heart is just sick over this. The Pentagon just admitted that those heart-rending “arrival ceremonies” at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii, wherein an honor guard carries off a cargo plane the flag-draped coffins supposedly containing the remains of soldiers killed in battle ARE ALL STAGED. The coffins are empty. We are constantly told that the Constitution’s First Amendment mandates “a separation of church and state,” on the basis of which prayers are forbidden in public schools, and the Ten Commandments removed from court houses across America. So why is it that an agency of the United States federal government — the Department of the Interior’s National Park Service — has produced a series of videos defending and extolling the Islamic religion? ______________________ Note: The words “separation of church and state” are not in the First Amendment, but are words from the phrase, “wall of separation between church and state,”...

BEAT LAMAR is announcing our 10-10-10 plan that will result in Joe Carr's victory over Lamar Alexander in the August 2014 Republican Senate primary. Herman Cain had his 9-9-9 plan. BEAT LAMAR has our 10-10-10 plan. 750,000 votes will be cast in the primary. That means we need 375,001 votes cast for Joe Carr to beat Lamar. Here's how we get those votes: 10 BEAT LAMAR Regional Coordinators on our paid staff will each bring at least 37,500 voters to the polls for Joe Carr. Each Regional Coordinator will work with-- 10 BEAT LAMAR Volunteer Leaders in their region, each...

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), who has been rumored as being considered to replace Janet Napolitano to head the Department of Homeland Security, used some very strange language earlier this week to characterize a sentiment for a clean resolution to end the government shutdown. She labeled it a form of “martial law.” Yes, we have heard Ms. Lee say some whimsical and ridiculous things in her time in office, which I’m sure embarrass her fellow Texans, but this has to be one of the most ridiculous ones to date. She pushed that the measure was bi-partisan, including Democrats and...

.........If Dowd thinks Cruz a radical for taking to the Senate floor with his legitimate grievances about ObamaCare and the underhanded manner in which it was imposed upon the American people,I wonder what she might say about Virginian Patrick Henry's response to the Stamp Act of 1765,which whipped American colonists into an anti-British fervor? Britain, trying to raise tax revenue to pay for the French and Indian War,from which the American colonies benefited, issued an edict requiring a government stamp on newspapers, legal documents, and other items. According to historian H.W. Crocker III, Patrick Henry:... used the Stamp Act to declare that as Caesar...

Last week I wrote a column accusing the president of having a vindictive streak — of deliberately trying to make the lives of average Americans worse just so he could score ideological and political points. We already knew from how he handled the budget sequester that Obama liked this approach. He ordered Cabinet secretaries not to do their jobs — i.e., to manage as best they could under spending restraints — but instead to find ways to make the cuts needlessly painful for innocents caught in the Beltway crossfire. They dusted off the same playbook for the shutdown. As one...

.....The Maryland Health Connection enrolled just more than 1,120 people in the first 10 days — compared with more than 9,000 in Kentucky, which has fewer uninsured, and tens of thousands in California and New York. Other states have had similar problems, and the federal site, which serves 36 states, has been bogged down. But Maryland is now being targeted for criticism by conservatives on Capitol Hill and publications such as the Weekly Standard, which highlighted the fact that consumers could not search Maryland Health Connection to see if their doctors participate in the program. Some Obamacare supporters are also...

Heads up, Freepers. Phony news organizations are pushing a brand new narrative, hot off the press from OFA no doubt. They are pushing bogus push polls conducted in Utah and Texas to give the impression that Cruz and Lee are losing support in their home states, and that Texans and Utahns want their senators to 'compromise more'. This is evidently BS, and is an attempt to give a leg up to Karl Rove and his lackeys who want Obamacare forever, and want to discourage Republicans from standing with Ted and Mike. I would encourage everyone, regardless of which state they...

The federal health-care exchange that opened a dozen days ago is marred by snags beyond the widely publicized computer gridlock that has thwarted Americans trying to buy a health plan. Even when consumers have been able to sign up, insurers sometimes can’t tell who their new customers are because of a separate set of computer defects. The problems stem from a feature of the online marketplace’s computer system that is designed to send each insurer a daily report listing people who have just enrolled. According to several insurance industry officials, the reports are sometimes confusing and duplicative. In some cases,...

It’s highway robbery! City hacks now have to shell out 6 cents per fare so they can pay for tutorials on ObamaCare, The Post has learned. “Nobody’s happy about it,” said Charbel Sfeir, a yellow-cab driver since 1984. “It’s not fair. The money’s going to go to paperwork for ObamaCare. I don’t need to pay them do to paperwork.” The hack tax, mandated by the city Taxi and Limousine Commission, went into effect Oct. 1 and requires that drivers pay for “disability insurance and health-care navigation services.” The TLC has placed the Taxi Workers Alliance, a drivers union, in charge of...

The White House and the Senate are working to squeeze House Republicans into accepting a bipartisan compromise from the upper chamber to reopen the government and raise the debt ceiling. Any emerging deal, however, will leave ObamaCare largely intact, angering conservatives who have demanded defunding or delaying President Obama’s signature achievement. House Republicans are fuming over the prospect that Senate Democrats and Republicans are working on a plan to jam them with a last-minute deal they would have to accept or risk triggering a federal default. “They are trying to jam us with the Senate and we are not going...

Beijing (AFP) - While US politicians grapple with how to reopen their shuttered government and avoid a potentially disastrous default on their debt, the world should consider 'de-Americanising', a commentary on China's official news agency said Sunday. "As US politicians of both political parties (fail to find a) viable deal to bring normality to the body politic they brag about, it is perhaps a good time for the befuddled world to start considering building a de-Americanised world," the commentary on state news agency Xinhua said.

A program intended to help educate uninsured people in Western Pennsylvania about Obamacare started sluggishly because “navigators” are not trained, and several positions remain vacant nearly two weeks after online insurance marketplaces went live. “This is a new program, and there are going to be some glitches,” said Larry Klinger, who oversees a navigator program at Allegheny Intermediate Unit, where two such workers are in place. “You work through the glitches, and you make the best you can.” The intermediate unit is one of several organizations statewide hiring and training navigators, a category of workers established under the federal Patient...
