  • An MIT researcher says we should trash all our recyclable plastic, and he's probably right

Recycling plastic uses up a lot of resources, and after all the hauling around, sorting, and processing of bottles and containers, it often ends up getting thrown away or burned. MIT business researcher Andrew McAfee says we'd be better off putting our plastic waste into well-managed landfills. He argues we should spend our "mental budget for thinking about the Earth on more high-impact changes," like carbon taxes on major polluters and nuclear energy.

A high school in Ohio has promised to do away with the titles of homecoming king and queen after two girls were voted by their peers to win the "popularity contest." At Friday night's football game, Milford High School named two female students "homecoming royalty," according to a press release shared on the district's Facebook page. While the school has typically named a male student "king" and a female student "queen" at their homecoming events, Milford Exempted Village School District will now use the term "homecoming royalty" following the groundbreaking results. The choice to describe the two students who received the most votes from the student body...
  • Republicans Vs. Screaming Anchors

    10/09/2019 4:18:04 PM PDT · by Kaslin · 11 replies ^ | October 9, 2019 | Brent Bozell and Tim Graham
Politico posted a curious headline by senior media reporter Michael Calderone the other day: "News anchors fight back against GOP senators' refusal to condemn Trump." At this point, is it really news that "news anchors" are fighting the GOP? Calderone in this case refers to CNN's Jake Tapper and NBC's Chuck Todd. Let's address them separately. "Tapper proclaimed on Sunday that no Republican Senate or House leaders would appear on his show 'State of the Union' to defend Trump," Calderone wrote. Tapper told Calderone that "he doesn't think it should be controversial to say 'using your political office to push...
  • Maria Bartiromo: IG Report on FISA “Will Be Released October 18th – As Thick as Telephone Book”…

    10/09/2019 4:02:47 PM PDT · by bitt · 67 replies
Against new information that U.S. Attorney John Durham has lengthened the time-frame for this investigative inquiry into the DOJ and FBI activity around the 2016 election, earlier today Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo revealed (and President Trump tweeted) the FISA report by Michael Horowitz will be released on Friday October 18th. If that time-frame for the IG report is accurate, that means the classification review has been completed; any remaining classified information not specifically authorized in the inspector general report, a decision granted to AG Bill Barr, would be placed in a classified appendix that is not available to the...

  • COSCO Tankers Go Dark

    10/09/2019 3:38:22 PM PDT · by ameribbean expat · 43 replies
About a third of the tankers owned by COSCO Shipping Tanker (Dalian) have shut off their AIS systems after the U.S. imposed sanctions on the company for allegedly shipping Iranian crude, reports Reuters. Ship tracking data from Refinitiv Eikon indicates that in the week ending October 7, 14 tankers, including nine VLCCs, have gone dark. The U.S. imposed sanctions on the company on September 25. At the time, the U.S. Department of State said the company, along with five others, knowingly engaging in a significant transaction for the transport of oil from Iran in defiance of sanctions set in place...

Iranian women will be allowed to enter a football stadium this week for the first time in nearly 40 years after pressure from soccer’s governing body FIFA forced Iran to lift its male-only policy, according to FIFA and state-run media. FIFA ordered Iran to end its ban on letting women enter stadiums during an inspection visit last month. The organization said the ban breaches international soccer statutes prohibiting discrimination.
  • Armed Conspiracy Group will defend Republicans at Minneapolis Trump Rally

No one’s expecting Donald Trump’s Thursday rally in Minneapolis to go seamlessly. Some 20,000 mostly out-of-towners will descend on the Target Center. An even larger crowd of locals will be frothing outside. It's a recipe that makes collisions inevitable. So Republicans will be escorted to and from their cars. That duty will fall to Oath Keepers, a “patriot” group whose members fancy themselves as “guardians of the republic.” Or as the Southern Poverty Law Center calls them, “one of the largest radical anti-government groups in the U.S. today.” They are not the kind of people you want entering your city....
  • What Democ-rats Today Really Want

Daniel Patrick Moynihan was an American public servant with characteristics all too rare today -- integrity, intelligence, wisdom. Moynihan was a Democrat who would find a hard time being at home in today's Democratic Party. He was a policy adviser in Democratic -- Kennedy -- and Republican -- Nixon -- administrations and went on to serve four terms as a Democratic senator of New York. Here are two of Moynihan's many famous observations that are particularly relevant in today's chaotic times: "The central conservative truth is that it is culture, not politics, that determines the success of a society. The...
  • India’s Visa Worker Lobby: Democrat Sen. Dick Durbin Echoes Racial Segregationists

The Indian visa workers who helped Sen. Mike Lee come close to passing his Indian green card giveaway bill are now portraying Democrat Sen. Dick Durbin as a racist for blocking the bill. “Senator Durbin’s argument against the bill is no different from the arguments presented by those against removing segregation and discrimination,” said an October 2 message by the group, titled Immigration Voice (IV). [...] The bill would put roughly 300,000 Indian workers and 300,000 family members at the head of the line for green cards by discarding the decades-old, pro-diversity “country caps” rule. The large population of Indians...

  • What the Supreme Court and a Funeral Home Can Teach Us About Civics

    10/09/2019 2:50:23 PM PDT · by Kaslin · 10 replies ^ | october 9, 2019 | James Gottry
On Tuesday, the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes, Inc. v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The case arose when Harris Funeral Homes, a fifth generation family business, was sued by the EEOC because of its sex-specific dress code. The question before the Court is whether the word “sex” in Title VII and other civil rights laws includes “transgender status.” There is much at stake. A change in the law could force organizations to open women’s shelters to biological men. It could throw open the doors of locker rooms, restrooms and showers to the opposite...

He was put in charge of the fake House impeachment inquiry perhaps because of his penchant for lying about anything at any time and making good on the reputation yet again, here is Democrat Adam Schiff caught engaged in another fabrication. Schiff claimed the Ukraine whistleblower has been receiving “death threats.” Really? How is that possible given no-one is supposed to know who the fake whistleblower even is!??? If Schiff represents the best of the 2019 version of the Democrat Party, that’s a party in some serious trouble. He shouldn’t be trusted to fill a coffee order let alone chair...
  • Californians not giving up trucks, SUVs — setting state up for failure on climate goals

    10/09/2019 2:46:08 PM PDT · by matt04 · 30 replies
California is not on track to meet its greenhouse gas emission goals, in part because Californians just aren’t ready to give up their trucks and SUVs. A new study by nonprofit group Next 10 and Beacon Economics found Californians in late 2018 owned more gas-guzzling pickups, mini-vans and SUVs than they did five years ago. Those vehicles made up 57.3 percent of new vehicle registrations in 2018, compared to 39.3 percent in 2013. ... “Assuming the same rate of reduction from 2016 to 2017, California will reach its 2030 and 2050 goals in 2061 and 2157, respectively — representing a...
  • Trump backers rally at City Hall against Mayor Jacob Frey

Supporters of President Donald Trump protested Wednesday outside the City Hall office of Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who has been in a public spat with the Trump campaign over the $530,000 security bill for Thursday’s Target Center rally. Chants of “We support our police, Frey do you?” and “Trump, Trump, Trump!” rang out for about a half-hour as the crowd of about two dozen people mobilized outside of Frey’s office. The mayor was not present, in observance of Yom Kippur. Plans for the rally first surfaced late Tuesday afternoon when the national coordinator of Bikers for Trump posted a Facebook...
  • Graham Tells Pelosi GOP Senators Won’t Remove Trump Over Ukraine Call: ‘She Can Stop Now’

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Wednesday said he will send a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) indicating that Senate Republicans will not impeach President Trump over a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, saying “she can stop now.” Speaking to Fox News, Graham, who is the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he will ask other Senate Republicans to sign a letter to Pelosi that said they “do not believe the transcript of the phone call between the president and Ukraine is an impeachable offense.” “They’re about to destroy the nation for no good reason,” Graham...
  • Americans under 30 more likely to resent the ultra-rich and support violence against the wealthy

    10/09/2019 2:14:18 PM PDT · by rktman · 26 replies ^ | 10/9/2019 | unknown
Among Americans under 30, 52% say that ‘most’ rich people in the United States got rich ‘by taking advantage of other people.’ In contrast, a strong 72% majority of seniors over 65 say that most wealthy people in America ‘earned their wealth’ without exploiting people. Americans under 30 were also much more ambivalent toward capitalism and supportive of socialism. The survey found support for capitalism and socialism nearly evenly split among young Americans, with 49% saying they are favorable toward capitalism, and 50% saying they are favorable toward socialism.

Weather forecasters expect the wildland fire danger in some areas of California to be extreme Tuesday night and into Thursday. Strong north to northeast winds accompanied by low humidity has triggered Red Flag Warnings putting land managers on edge. PG&E is so worried it is proactively turning off the electrical power to 600,000 addresses in nearly 30 northern, central, coastal, and Bay Area counties. We consulted a fairly new fire danger forecasting tool to see how it analyzed what firefighters will be faced with for the next few days. The Hot-Dry-Windy Index (HDW) is described as being very simple and...
  • Joe Biden's Family Has Been Getting Rich off His Political Career for Decades

On Wednesday, The Intercept published a lengthy and detailed exposé on how Joe Biden's family has financially benefited from his career in politics. While Democrats pursue impeachment of Trump for defeating Hillary in 2016, the Democrats are ignoring a huge problem: when Hunter Biden’s career is scrutinized, it clearly shows "that he, along with Joe Biden’s brother James, has been trading on their family name for decades, cashing in on the implication — and sometimes the explicit argument — that giving money to a member of Joe Biden’s family wins the favor of Joe Biden." In 1973, one year after...

Baltimore: “Homeschooling Starts in Public School.” ??? by Scott Woodruff • October 4, 2019 The city of Baltimore has once again created conflict by unlawfully demanding that homeschool families enroll in public school. I addressed this issue less than two months ago and believed it was resolved. It was disappointing to see it surface again. A family moved to Maryland from another state and decided to homeschool their children in Baltimore. They filed a proper notice of intent, but a local official told them: “You need to enroll your children first in the local public school, and then un-enroll them...
