A US soldier accused of killing 16 civilians - nine of them children - in southern Afghanistan in March should face the death penalty, military prosecutors say. Several soldiers told the preliminary hearing that Sgt Robert Bales returned to their base covered in blood. Sgt Bales' lawyer says there is not enough evidence for him to stand trial. The lead investigator in the case will make a recommendation on whether a full court martial ought to proceed. Col Lee Deneke will make his recommendation to a senior general by the end of this week, who will then make a decision...

California's Uncounted Mail-In Ballots Reach Thousands November 13, 2012 SACRAMENTO (KABC) -- There are plenty of vote-by-mail ballots in California that won't count in the final November tally, largely because of postmarks and signatures. There's a group out to change some of those ballot rules, hoping to boost voter turnout. Thousands of vote-by-mail ballots throughout California are sitting in county registrar offices right now and will never be counted. Some signatures on ballot envelopes don't match the one on the voter registration card. Other ballots are from previous elections. But the most common reason a ballot doesn't get counted: it...

The catch-up boom in China, India, Brazil is largely over and will be followed by a drastic slowdown over the next decade, according to a grim report by America’s top forecasting body. Europe's prognosis is even worse, with France trapped in depression with near zero growth as far as 2025 and Britain struggling to raise its speed limit to 1pc over the next three Parliaments. The US Conference Board’s global economic outlook calls into question the "BRICs" miracle (Brazil, Russia, India, China), arguing that the low-hanging fruit from cheap labour and imported technology has already been picked. While in Tripoli, he personally questioned the CIA station chief and other CIA personnel who were in Benghazi on Sept. 11 when the attack occurred. Athens’ successful bond auction cheered traders, despite warnings that Greece may have to hold another emergency auction to raise the final €1bn needed to redeem the €5bn bond due on Friday. That’s their story and they’re stickin’ to it, I suppose. During the White House briefing today, Press Secretary Jay Carney affirmed the president’s confidence in Gen. Carney also emphasized the president’s eagerness to focus on his current number-one priority, a.k.a. jobs, the economy, and the fiscal cliff (which, I’m sure, is perfectly true — no good lingering on security concerns that bring any more attention to that Benghazi disaster, is it?).

The idea was considered so radical that in 2009, when President Barack Obama tried to pass a bill on global warming, that he instead opted for the more moderate approach of capping power plant emissions and trading credits that allowed utilities to pollute more. That idea, after passing the House, stalled in the Senate in 2010 and has been considered dead since.

The United States on Tuesday recognized the newly formed coalition of Syrian rebel groups as the “legitimate representative” of the Syrian people. Speaking to reporters, State Department deputy spokesperson Mark Toner told reporters that as far as the U.S. was concerned, the rebel coalition group “does reflect the Syrian people... that diverse group of Syrian people. We now have a structure in place that can prepare for a political transition, but... we're looking for it to still establish the types of technical committees that will allow us to make sure our assistance gets to the right places.” With that, Toner...

While members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee were tight-lipped about a classified briefing on the deadly terrorist attacks in Benghazi, Libya, many made it clear they still had unanswered questions about what happened. Committee member Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) told reporters following the mid-afternoon briefing that he was pushing to hear from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has so far been absent from the hill following the Sept. 11 attacks. “I think ultimately we need to hear from Secretary Clinton,” Rubio said. “I think she’s willing to come in and talk about it, I know she’s traveling, but hopefully...

During a press conference following a wreath laying ceremony at Punchbowl National Cemetery in Hawaii, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta responded to a reporter’s question regarding the whole issue of sequestration. "Sequestration" is a fiscal policy procedure adopted by Congress to deal with the federal budget deficit. It first appeared in the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings Deficit Reduction Act of 1985. Simply put, sequestration is the cancellation of budgetary resources - an "automatic" form of spending cutback. ---------- And, you know, as you know from my own history dealing with budget deficits, in order to do it on a fair and effective...

Members of the House on Tuesday reiterated their call for the Obama administration to answer their questions about the September attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead, and pressed for former CIA Director David Petraeus to testify on the matter. "Congress still doesn't know why our people in Libya were left vulnerable," Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) said on the House floor. "We still don't know why the U.S. military was not sent to their defense. "It is of the highest importance that General Petraeus, who led the CIA at the time, be brought before...

GILBERT, AZ - A Mesa woman was arrested Saturday after she allegedly chased her husband around a Gilbert parking lot in an SUV during an argument over the presidential election. The woman finally ran over her husband, leaving him with critical injuries. According to a Gilbert police report, the argument started over her husband's lack of voter participation in the recent election. Holly Solomon, 28, apparently believed her family was going to face hardship as a result of President Barack Obama's re-election. Solomon's husband, Daniel Solomon, told police his wife "just hated Obama" and was very angry he was re-elected...

In an interview with POLITICO, Paul said he’ll return to Congress this week pushing measures long avoided by his party. He wants to work with liberal Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy and Republicans to eliminate mandatory minimum sentences for pot possession. He wants to carve a compromise immigration plan with an “eventual path” to citizenship for illegal immigrants, a proposal he believes could be palatable to conservatives. And he believes his ideas — along with pushing for less U.S. military intervention in conflicts overseas — could help the GOP broaden its tent and appeal to crucial voting blocs that handed Democrats...

The budget deficit rose in October, the first month of fiscal year 2013, as looming negotiations over expiring tax cuts and imminent spending reductions dominated the post-election political landscape. The Treasury said on Tuesday the October deficit was $120 billion, larger than economist forecasts for a $114 billion gap and up from $98 billion in October of 2011. Growth in expenditures outpaced rising receipts, deepening the deficit. Outlays grew to $304 billion from around $262 billion in the same month last year while receipts rose to $184 billion from $163 billion.

The California Chamber of Commerce sued the state today in a last-minute protest against the historic "cap and trade" greenhouse gas auction set for Wednesday. In a suit filed in Sacramento Superior Court, the chamber said the auction is really "an unconstitutional tax" on businesses that are affected by the state's global warming act, AB 32.

Colorado Springs, Colo. (November 12, 2012) – On Election Day, at an enthusiastic gathering of Obama supporters in Fountain, Colorado; Dave Phillips, a reporter for the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph, had just finished an interview with Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar about his controversial policies for managing America’s wild horse populations. Just after Secretary Salazar answered final questions about the future safety of wild horses and he turned to leave the interview, he unexpectedly approached Phillips and told him, “If you set me up like this again, I’ll punch you out.” Standing nearby was Ginger Kathrens, Executive Director of...
