Consumer confidence rose to a four-and-a-half-year high in November as consumers became more optimistic about the outlook for the economy, according to a private sector report released on Tuesday. The Conference Board, an industry group, said its index of consumer attitudes rose to 73.7 up from an upwardly revised 73.1 the month before, its highest since February 2008. Economists had expected a reading of 73.0, according to a Reuters poll. A convicted felon was found with a stolen revolver and was arrested early Thursday after a heated dispute at 23rd and Alder. A woman told police the suspect, who she had never seen before, started pounding on her door shortly before 2:30 a.m. Thanksgiving morning. She looked out the window and saw the suspect and the woman's neighbor arguing, according to police. She then saw the suspect pull a gun on her neighbor. She then went and got her legal handgun and went outside to confront the suspect. The man tried to leave, but was stopped by another person, who...
  • For 2016, Bush vs. Clinton

(CNN) -- For all of our post-2012 election talk about the changing culture, the changing demographics and, perhaps, a changing party, preliminary thoughts out of D.C. about the 2016 election have us headed toward not much change at all: Clinton vs Bush...again. I am as intrigued by the prospects of these two juggernauts, Jeb and Hillary, locking ideological horns as I am repulsed by the thought of half of my life being dominated by two family names. One, Clinton, has risen from the ashes after the White House. The other name, Bush, is so toxic that the past two Republican...
  • Brown-Forman Declares $4 Special Dividend Ahead of Cliff Deadline

Two weeks after raising its regular quarterly dividend, Brown-Forman (BFB n.a.) declared a special cash dividend of $4.00 a share on Tuesday as it looks to return money to shareholders ahead of the fiscal cliff deadline that could significantly raise dividend taxes. The maker of alcoholic beverages like Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey, Southern Comfort, Korbel and Woodford Reserve said the special dividend will be paid on Dec. 27 to shareholders of record on Dec. 12. A slew of companies, including Wal-Mart (WMT), have been moving up the date of their dividend to save shareholders a bundle of money on taxes...

Before Sheldon Bruck told his orthodox Jewish parents he was gay, the teenager looked for a way out of homosexuality. His search led him to JONAH -- Jews Offering New Alternatives for Healing -- which claimed on its website to help people "struggling with unwanted same-sex sexual attractions." JONAH co-director Arthur Goldberg promised Bruck, then 17, that "JONAH could help him change his orientation from gay to straight," according to a consumer fraud lawsuit filed Tuesday against JONAH, Goldberg and a JONAH counselor.

Two former top Florida Republicans say a new law that shortened the early voting period in the state was designed by the GOP to suppress the Democratic vote, not to curb voter fraud, according to a report Monday from the Palm Beach Post. The Palm Beach Post quoted Former Republican Party of Florida Chairman Jim Greer and former Gov. Charlie Crist, neither of whom is still a party member, and a handful of other party operatives, who said claims the law was designed to curb voter fraud in the state were merely a marketing ploy to provide cover for the...

A growing number of Democrats say they are willing to let the country go off the fiscal cliff if a deal cannot be reached by Jan. 1 that raises taxes on the top two percent of earners while protecting costly entitlement programs. Their theory in this game of chicken with Republicans is that it will be easier in January to lower taxes for 98 percent of the country while finding the best possible parts of the federal budget to cut — in line with long-held goals of the nation's liberal party. They also think they'll be in a better position...

Chinese paper congratulates Kim Jong Un on being named ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ by the Onion By Dylan Stableford, Yahoo! News Senior Media Reporter In a hilarious if increasingly common example of a real newspaper taking a satirical newspaper seriously, the People's Daily—the website for the Communist Party of China's newspaper—published a story on Tuesday congratulating North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on being named 2012's "Sexiest Man Alive" by the Onion. "U.S. website The Onion has named North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un as the 'Sexiest Man Alive' for the year 2012," the story announces before quoting the Onion's...

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin has a message for Republicans insisting on wholesale changes to entitlement programs in exchange for new tax revenue: not yet. In a speech later this morning that seeks to crystalize the progressive approach to deficit reduction, the Senate’s No. 2 Democrat will try to split the debate about overhauling Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid from the negotiations over resolving the fiscal cliff. “Progressives should be willing to talk about ways to ensure the long-term viability of Medicare and Medicaid but those conversations should not be part of a plan to avert the fiscal cliff,” Durbin...

BREMERTON, Wash. -- Washington state appeals court judges had lots of questions for lawyers at a hearing about whether a gun owner should be prosecuted in a Bremerton school shooting that critically injured a 9-year-old girl. Kitsap County prosecutors charged Douglas Bauer because he owns the pistol his girlfriend's son took to Armin Jahr Elementary. It fired through the boy's backpack, critically wounding Amina Kocer-Bowman in a classroom. Amina spent six weeks in a hospital and endured numerous surgeries for internal injuries caused by the shooting.

It's a 34 page scanned pdf, so it is both detailed and slow to download. Reading the earliest versions of what happened, or was alleged to have happened, I find them incomprehensible. Bullets coming out of the trigger guard or the side of the gun? Then he changes to an out-of-battery discharge, but even that doesn't hold up. The judge doesn't fix a number, but orders the defense to file its documents on attorney fees (with a hint that they shouldn't be tempted to pad things out). I suspect this will be a VERY expensive mistake. Comment by James: Reading...

Over the last three weeks, I think I have read most of the post-election op-eds written on the Latino vote. I have studied exit polling, read sophisticated demographic analyses, and talked to as many Latinos in my hometown as I could. The result is that I would not advise Republicans to go down the identity-politics route. I don’t wish to live in an America where Steve Lara or Bob Martinez is reduced to an anonymous “Latino” and Victor Hanson is just a “white male.” But if Republicans really believe there is a monolithic Latino vote, and if those of Hispanic...

If you want to understand why President Obama was reelected despite a largely unsuccessful presidency and almost unprecedentedly high and continuous unemployment, just look at the Cuban-American vote. In fact, if you want to understand America today — specifically, why it is in decline — just look at the Cuban-American vote. As reported in the Wall Street Journal, “The president captured 48% of the Cuban-American vote in Florida — a record high for a Democrat.” Democratic presidential nominees went from 25 percent of the Cuban-American vote in 2000, to 29 percent in 2004, to 35 percent in 2008, to 48...

A British engineer who moved to South Africa after "falling in love with the country" has been brutally murdered on his remote farmstead. Mr Preece's daughter-in-law has told how a gang of three robbers poisoned the couple's large pack of guard dogs before breaking into the house. Since the country's first fully democratic elections in 1994, more than 3,000 white, mainly Afrikaans, farmers have been killed in their homes. The so-called "farm attacks" are part of the wave of criminality that has engulfed the country in recent years, something criminologists blame of a number of factors...
