Racism? Black leaders fret white person may take Jesse Jackson's House seatBy: Joe Newby November 27, 2012 **SNIP** “There’s a great deal of concern that Debbie Halvorson would win because the black vote would be split 18 ways,” Delmarrie Cobb, a longtime Democratic political consultant in Chicago said. “The battle we have is that we can’t afford to lose a black voice in Congress,” she added. “It would be a terrible loss in many ways,” she added. According to Politico, losing the seat to a white person, no matter how qualified, would "be a blow to the black establishment."

Obama quietly signs bill shielding airlines from carbon fees in EuropeBy Keith Laing - 11/27/12 02:02 PM ET President Obama has signed into law a bill that requires U.S. airlines be excluded from European carbon emissions fees. Environmentalists had framed the bill as the first test of the president's commitment to fighting climate change in his second term and urged him to veto it. Obama quietly signed it Tuesday over their objections. "The Obama administration is firmly committed to reducing harmful carbon pollution from civil aviation both domestically and internationally, but, as we have said on many occasions, the application...

Obama Treasury Dept. declares China is not manipulating currencyBy Vicki Needham - 11/27/12 05:11 PM ET The Obama administration is coming under criticism from Sen. Charles Schumer for declaring that China is not a currency manipulator. Following Tuesday's release of a report that again finds China is not keeping the value of its currency artificially low to cut the price of its exports to the United States, Schumer criticized the administration for avoiding penalties against China. "This report all but admits China’s currency is being manipulated, but stops short of saying so explicitly," Schumer, a close ally of Obama's, said...

Reid: 'Fiscal cliff' deal must raise debt ceilingBy Alexander Bolton - 11/27/12 02:53 PM ET Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Tuesday any deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and spending cuts must also raise the debt ceiling, and signaled that President Obama feels the same way. Reid said Democrats would be foolish to agree to a year-end package that raises revenues and cuts spending only to face a Republican ultimatum on the debt ceiling weeks later. “We would be somewhat foolish to work out something on stopping us from going over the cliff and then...

The White House sharply escalated its attacks Tuesday on Republicans trying to stop Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice from succeeding Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state. Press secretary Jay Carney described GOP lawmakers as being gripped by a politically fueled "obsession" with a series of television appearances Rice made shortly after the deadly Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, in which she wrongly suggested the attack had stemmed from a demonstration over an anti-Muslim video rather than a terrorist assault. Carney's comments came after Rice met privately on Capitol Hill with Republican...

Washington, D.C. - Nevada Senator Harry Reid made the following remarks on the Senate floor today regarding efforts to reach a balanced, bipartisan agreement to avert the fiscal cliff. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:Too often, it is a challenge finding common ground in Washington. But as we negotiate a path back from the fiscal cliff, we should also recognize when Democrats and Republicans agree. We agree taxes should not go up for anyone making less than $250,000 a year – 97 percent of small businesses and 98 percent of middle-class families. With common ground in sight, we should be able...

LONDON (AlertNet) - Flood-hit countries in Latin America and Asia – particularly Thailand, Cambodia and Pakistan – were the most severely affected by climate change in 2011, according to rankings released Tuesday. But the United States soared up the worst-hit list as a result of a spate of tornados, record-breaking temperatures and intense hurricanes in 2011 - which suggests the country’s recent damage from Hurricane Sandy may be part of a trend toward greater vulnerability to climate impacts. The United States, which has been on the most-affected list previously, including after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, moved from 30th place...

A county magistrate in North Carolina ordered Tuesday that a Mexican man deported two years ago receive custody of his three U.S.-born children. In an unprecedented decision, Alleghany County Judge Michael Duncan ruled that Felipe Montes, 32, be provisionally reunited with his sons Isaias, 5, Adrian, 3, and Angel, 2. "The court cannot find that the father is unfit," Duncan said. "The permanent plan is reunification with the father." Montes was deported in December 2010 after receiving a series of traffic fines and immigration authorities found he was in the country illegally. Read more:

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has said that the debt-laden country had secured its place in the eurozone after a major debt deal with its international creditors. "We have laid the foundations to ensure that Greek debt, the most tortuous and destabilising problem facing the country, has become manageable," Mr Samaras said in a television address, adding that Greece has "ensured its place in the euro." It came after eurozone finance ministers finally reached a deal over Greece's debt burden, enabling the release of its latest tranche of rescue funds. Markets breathed a sigh of relief as eurozone finance ministers...

In the wake of the 2012 election, it is clear that the demographic challenges facing the Republican Party are serious. The populations that tend to vote Democrat are increasing their share of the electorate, while the share of the electorate that tends to vote Republican is decreasing. With the GOP now falling all over themselves to promote amnesty, this trend threatens to only intensify. On the other hand, the Democrats will for the foreseeable future be reliant on a vote split in minority communities that is basically tribal in nature. There is no way in hell that 100% of blacks...

  • Utah Voter Turnout One Of Lowest In Country [Utah in bottom 10 of eligible voters staying home]

The number of Utah citizens going to the polls continues to drop. The “Salt Lake Tribune” reports that while election officials point to 80 percent voter turnout across the state, that number only reflects registered voters, and doesn’t include more than half-a-million Utahns who are eligible to vote but not registered. Overall, the number of people in the state who cast ballots in the presidential election was 57 percent. That’s basically the same number as the 2008 election, when Utah placed 9th lowest in the country in voter turnout.

Thirty years have passed since French president François Mitterrand launched Europe’s last great wave of nationalisation, seizing the banks, insurance groups, arms makers and steel industry in the culminating debacle of the Collectivist era. The whole world has been living in an era of privatisation ever since. So it seems like a strange step back in time to hear France’s minister of industrial renewal, Arnaud Montebourg, threatening a “temporary public takeover” of ArcelorMittal’s steel operations in the Lorraine plateau – purportedly to save the blast furnaces of Florange and their 2,500 workers, so sacred in the Socialist Party catechism. It...

November 27, 2012 At the Associated Press, Benghazi Is Just a 'PR Disaster' Tom Blumer Well, if the President himself can call it "a bump in the road," why not? Monday morning at the Associated Press, aka the Administration's Press, presented a story in advance of United Nations ambassador Susan Rice's meeting today with certain Republican senators -- a meeting from which Rice, who engaged in serial falsehood peddling during the weekend after the September 11 Benghazi attack, apparently falsehood-peddling Rice emerged today even worse-off than before. In that story, both the headline and first paragraph of Anne Flaherty's coverage...

IDF soldiers stationed along the border fence with Gaza say they have received new orders on opening fire, which allow Arabs in Gaza to endanger soldiers and Israeli civilians in nearby communities. "Between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. there are hundreds and possibly thousands of people roaming near the fence, including uniformed Hamas men," a soldier told Channel 2. His identity was disguised to avoid trouble from the IDF. "They crossed the fence several times and went into our forces' positions and destroyed IDF property. The forces cannot push them away from the fence because they may not even fire...
