  • Madison civil rights panel looks at making homelessness a protected class

Should homelessness be a protected trait — like sex, race, age and many others — in the city of Madison? The city’s advisory Equal Opportunities Commission is beginning to look into adding homelessness to the list of characteristics which may not be considered in housing, employment and public accommodation under Madison’s Equal Opportunities Ordinance. Interest in exploring whether homeless people should be designated a protected class to ensure their civil rights goes back to a controversy early this year about efforts to dissuade the homeless from hanging out in the lobby of the City-County Building, committee Chairman Brian Benford told...

There are two ways to look at the recent push by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and Senate President John Cullerton to grant driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. The first is to say absolutely not. Illegal immigrants, after all, are here illegally. They’re not supposed to be living in the U.S. They shouldn’t be able to buy and register automobiles. Employers aren’t supposed to hire them, so they shouldn’t have jobs that they need a car to drive to each day. And so on. Giving illegal immigrants driver’s licenses also sends the message that, yes, we will accept you in our...

A group of Nobel peace-prize winners, prominent artists and activists issued a call for a “comprehensive military embargo against Israel” following the recent hostilities in Gaza. In a letter, the group denounces the United States, European Union and several developing countries for what it describes as their "complicity" through weapons sales and other military support for the Jewish state, The Guardian reported. The 52 signatories include the Nobel peace laureates Mairead Maguire and Adolfo Perez Esquivel; film directors Mike Leigh and Ken Loach; author Alice Walker; notorious anti-Israel academic Noam Chomsky; Roger Waters of Pink Floyd; and Stephane Hessel, a...

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu should be considered the world’s most dangerous leader today. It’s not because of what Bibi Netanyahu and Israel are capable of inflicting but because of what Bibi Netanyahu and Israel could ignite - a far greater conflict than just an Israel-Iran War that could extend all the way here. Alone, Israel might not even be able to defeat Iran. The Israelis should remember the heavy price they paid for the 2006 Hezbollah-Israel War that was fought in Lebanon. That was a shocking experience for Israel. A mere neighborhood bully stopped this mighty tiny Jewish...

While the Israeli-Hamas cease-fire holds and the TV pundits argue over who initiated the recent Gazan spat, the evidence for an Iran instigated proxy war is overwhelming. Iran’s fingerprints are all over Hamas’ weaponry. For Iran, it’s essential, in the face of a potential ‘nuclear’ showdown, that Israel remains occupied on its border with Teheran’s proxies: Gaza, Lebanon and Syria. It’s a strategy confirmed by the Arab worlds’ most-read newspaper. The long-range rockets currently being fired towards Tel Aviv are Iranian-manufactured Fajr 5 missiles. The IDF (Israeli Defence Force) website cites Sudan as assisting in the transit of these weapons....

Gun control is a less-discussed issue these days compared to the mid-‘90’s. It was around this time that gun control hysteria swept the nation as it served as an electable quality for all leftist leaders to crusade against those evil man-killers. As they created further restrictions and instituted a federal assault weapons ban, we were all told that it was for our own good. After all, guns kill people and lead to increased crime rates. The low information voter will be the death of America. New Gallup poll shows a majority of Americans now disagree with liberals that it is the government's responsibility to see that all Americans have health insurance: ***** For the first time in Gallup trends since 2000, a majority of Americans say it is not the federal government's responsibility to make sure all Americans have healthcare coverage. Prior to 2009, a majority always felt the government should ensure healthcare coverage for all, though Americans' views have become more divided in recent years. The current results are based on Gallup's annual Health...

According to the leaders of the global warming doomsday cult, the average surface temperature of Earth is 14 degrees Celsius (57.2 degrees Fahrenheit), but this is a new value which has quietly replaced the original average of 15 degrees Celsius (59 degrees Fahrenheit). In March 1988, a few months before NASA's James Hansen asserted before the Congress that global warming was in progress, the New York Times quoted him as saying that he used 59 degrees Fahrenheit as the average global temperature to calculate the temperature variations. ***** "One of the scientists, Dr. James E. Hansen of the National Aeronautics...
  • Gazan billboards say ‘Thank you Iran’

Large billboards saying “Thank you Iran” have appeared next to three major road junctions in the Gaza Strip in an unprecedented public acknowledgment of the weapons terrorist groups in the Strip receive from the Islamic Republic. The message was written in Arabic, English, Hebrew and Farsi above a picture of an Iranian manufactured Fajr 5 rocket like the ones fired at Tel Aviv and Jerusalem during the recent round of hostilities. “Iranian rockets struck at Tel Aviv. They reached Jerusalem. Therefore it was our duty to thank those who helped our people,” Islamic Jihad leader Khader Habib told Reuters.

The days are ticking off to a January 1 fiscal implosion, and Republicans are trying to MacGyver a fiscal fix. Three days after the election, President Obama claimed the voters had given him a mandate to raise taxes on the rich. With Pew reporting that 58 percent of Americans feel the rich pay too little in taxes, it’s hard for Republicans to contradict the president. Unless Congress intervenes to prevent the Bush tax cuts from expiring, high earners will face significantly higher income taxes in 2013. For the top two brackets, the rate will rise to 36 percent (from 33...
  • No President Obama, We Can't "Outcompete" Other Countries

In a campaign speech, President Obama said: “I know we can outcompete any other nation on earth.” No we can’t. We can’t outcompete Germany, China, France–we can’t compete any other country. In fact, no country can outcompete any other. The very concept “outcompete” makes no sense on a national scale. One business can outcompete another business, but a nation can’t outcompete another nation across the board. Suppose Bangladesh firms have a comparative advantage in sewing garments. Even if Americans are better at it than Bangladeshis, both countries gain if Americans outsource their garment-sewing work to Bangladesh firms and shift American...

For decades, ordinary investors with modest sums to invest had limited options. With even low discount-broker commissions making a big dent into regular investments from typical paychecks, individual stocks were largely out of reach, leaving actively managed mutual funds as the primary alternative. Through active funds, money managers got used to the idea of taking 1% off the top on an annual basis, regardless of whether the funds they managed produced gains or lost money for their shareholders. Index mutual funds have been around for 35 years, but they largely coexisted peacefully with active funds throughout most of that time....

Pacific Legal Foundation, located in Sacramento, has filed a new lawsuit on the constitutionality of Obamacare that will be heard by the Supreme Court. Sacramento, CA; November 7, 2012: After this week’s election results, the costly, burdensome and intrusive Affordable Care Act (ACA) — “Obamacare” — is less likely than ever to be reformed, let alone repealed, by elected officials. But a promising, powerful legal challenge is still going forward — litigated by attorneys with Pacific Legal Foundation, a watchdog organization that defends limited government, free enterprise, and individual rights, in courtrooms nationwide. “Especially after the election of 2012, PLF...

U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Louisville, is holding out hope Congress can come to an agreement before the end of the year to avoid the fiscal cliff – a mix of mandatory spending cuts and the expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts. Unlike others, such as Democratic Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, Yarmuth said he doesn’t want to see Congress wait until after the first of the year to take up the tax issue. Murray has said Democrats might have a better chance to keep the cuts only for the middle class if the cuts are allowed to expire so Congress...

Saxby Chambliss is waffling around like a dog off its leash for the first time. He says he does not care about a “twenty year old pledge” he signed. He’s talking about the Americans for Tax Reform pledge that says he pledges not to raise taxes. He has clarified his remarks to mean he wants tax reform that increases revenue through job growth. Everyone knows that Saxby meant he was happy to raise taxes. Now, under pressure back home, he is waffling. He covets his seat in Washington and is fearful of being primaries. Georgia has primary run-offs, whichs means...
