Community members are up in arms in southeast Houston, demanding justice for a 21-year-old man who was shot by a store clerk during an altercation Monday night. What happened? The young man punched the clerk in the face. According to KHOU news, Alexander Calloway and his two cousins were trying to enter a gas station at 3:30 a.m., but the store was locked. The young men got into an argument with the clerk, Akrem Azzam, through the bulletproof exterior counter. Azzam eventually unlocked the door to speak with Calloway, which was admittedly unwise. Still, that’s no excuse for what happened...

In 1929, Deflation Started In Europe Before Overtaking The U.S. Economics / DeflationNov 30, 2012 - 05:23 AM By: EWI What Happens in Europe Will Not Stay in Europe More than 1,500 years after the fact, scholars still debate the causes of the Roman Empire's fall. What historians do agree on is that the crumbling empire's final days were marked by economic contraction, a struggle to fund Rome's routine affairs and excessive debt. Sound familiar? Mark Twain said, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme." That quote seems to apply when economically comparing the Roman Empire and the United...

While Hamas welcomed a UN vote to recognize "Palestine" on Thursday, on the same day it issued a statement rejecting the UN's famous Resolution 181, in which the world body voted in favor of a plan to recognize two states in what was then British Mandatory Palestine - one Arab, and one Jewish. The Arab world rejected the plan and attacked the fledgling Jewish state - an approach which led to Israel growing in size, while Egypt and Jordan seized the rest of the land in the former British mandate. Hamas' Thursday statement indicated that its approach to the "problem"...
  • Report: Extending Jobless Benefits Creates Jobs (Congressional Budget Office)

    Associated Press ^ | November 29, 2012 | By SAM HANANEL
Extending the current level of long-term unemployment benefits for another year would add 300,000 jobs to the economy, according to a report from the Congressional Budget Office. The analysis released Wednesday from the nonpartisan office estimates that keeping jobless benefits would cost the government $30 billion. But it would also lead to more spending by the unemployed, boosting demand for goods and services and creating new jobs. Federal long-term unemployment benefits are set to expire on Dec. 29 for more than 2 million workers unless Congress approves an extension. Democrats have called for reauthorization of extended benefits, but Republicans generally...

WASHINGTON—House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will try to force a vote on the House floor to extend current tax rates for the middle class next week if Republicans do not act, the California Democrat announced on Friday. During a press conference on Capitol Hill, Pelosi called on House Republicans, who control the chamber, to hold another floor vote on whether to extend current tax rates for individuals who earn $200,000 or less and families making $250,000 or less. If they don't, Pelosi vowed to file a "discharge petition" that would force a vote if 218 House members sign it, which...

The White House announced its opposition to a new round of Iran sanctions that the Senate unanimously approved Friday, in the latest instance of Congress pushing for more aggressive punitive measures on Iran than the administration deems prudent. On Thursday, Sens. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Mark Kirk (R-IL) introduced the amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, which the Senate passed 94-0. The new legislative language would blacklist Iran's energy, port, shipping, and shipbuilding sectors, while also placing new restrictions on Iran's ability to get insurance for all these industries. The legislation would also vastly expand U.S. support for human...

California Is About To Get Pummeled With Rivers Of Rain Mark Fischetti, Scientific AmericanNovember 30, 2012An atmospheric river (thin yellow band) feeds torrential rain into northern California on Nov. 30. Northern California is experiencing the first days of what weather forecasters are warning will be a long series of torrential rainstorms that could cause serious flooding across the northern one-third of the state. The relentless storms are being driven by a feature in the atmosphere you have probably never heard of: an atmospheric river. Oh, and another atmospheric river created the worst flooding since the 1960s in western England and...

A large tanker carrying liquified natural gas (LNG) is set to become the first ship of its type to sail across the Arctic. The carrier, Ob River, left Norway in November and has sailed north of Russia on its way to Japan. The specially equipped tanker is due to arrive in early December and will shave 20 days off the journey. The owners say that changing climate conditions and a volatile gas market make the Arctic transit profitable. Long-term preparationBuilt in 2007 with a strengthened hull, the Ob River can carry up to 150,000 cubic metres of gas. The tanker...

Ice Age warmth wiped out lemmings, study findsBy Michelle Warwicker BBC Nature 26 November 2012 Last updated at 22:07 Lemmings became "regionally extinct" five times due to rapid climate change during the last Ice Age, scientists have found. **SNIP** Instead the tests revealed that genetically distinct populations of lemmings were "present at different points in time" during the Late Pleistocene, 11,700 to around 126,000 years ago, meaning that the lemming population had been wiped out multiple times and then re-colonised some time after, possibly from populations in eastern Europe or Russia. The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the...

California Police Wish Gun Owners Would Just Comply with Robbers If a couple of thugs break into your place of business and point a gun in your face, then you would be perfectly justified in opening fire on them, right? Well, maybe not. San Jose police are giving one gun owner a stern tsk-tsk after she defended her property from a pair of armed thieves. According to ABC Local 7 News, a pair of thieves wearing masks and hooded sweatshirts burst into a San Jose jewelry store at 10:15 a.m. on Monday. At least one of the would-be thieves was...

Former Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman said Friday that the Republican Party should stress its "libertarian roots" rather than "fringe" social issues as it evaluates its election losses. “I think the deliberation about the Republican Party that we’re having is a very healthy thing," Huntsman told CNN. "And if we don’t wind up at the end of the exercise with a mission statement that is one sentence long, then we’re toast. That one statement ought to be, ‘Balance the budgets and get out of people’s lives.’ And you ought to build the party around that because we have strong libertarian...

Newt Gingrich: "Well, I think there are a lot worse things than going over a man-made cliff that I think is entirely artificial. And I think the reality is, the President of the United States has not come forward with any serious spending cuts. What the Democrats are proposing is to take the tax increase now, and then sometime next year, eventually, possibly, we might have some kind of entitlement reform. That's a really bad deal for the American people." Greta Van Sustern: "Well, I don't know if it's also a deal that anyone expects could be realistically kept. I...

Dominique Strauss-Kahn and the hotel housekeeper who accused him of sexually assaulting her last year have quietly reached an agreement to settle a lawsuit she brought against him stemming from the case, which made international headlines.  French media reported Friday that Strauss-Kahn, 63, former head of the International Monetary Fund, would pay $6 million to Nafissatou Diallo, who accused him of attacking her at a Manhattan hotel.   The parties are scheduled to appear next week before Justice Douglas E. McKeon in State Supreme Court in the Bronx. Mr. Strauss-Kahn, was arrested in May 2011 after Ms. Diallo, an immigrant from...

Everyone in Washington fears the fiscal cliff. The White House has no interest in going over. Democrats understand they’ll never have more power than they do now. Delaying a budget deal until after January means getting less of what they want. Republican leaders, meanwhile, live in fear of another 1995 government shutdown. When two sides fail to reach a deal, the media blame Republicans. That’s the lesson Republicans learned 17 years ago. They shudder imagining the headlines if negotiations were to break down next month: “Norquist-controlled GOP forces America off cliff.” Nothing terrifies them more than that. They’ll do anything...

California may find itself in a disastrous fiscal situation, but that won’t stop California’s newly-empowered unions from flexing their muscle. In the aftermath of the failure of Proposition 32, which would have prevented public sector unions from funding politicians, the unions are celebrating their confirmed power by striking. The latest strikes started today with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63, which shut down the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are the busiest ports in the United States. Even though November traffic remains slow at the ports, that doesn’t...

The bottom is falling out of economic forecasters’ expectations for U.S. economic growth in the final months of 2012. And if some of the more bearish estimates prove accurate, it will be the weakest rate of growth since the start of 2011. Macroeconomic Advisers had been projecting a 1.4 percent annual rate of GDP growth in the fourth quarter. On Friday it revised that estimate down to 1.1 percent Friday morning–and then again to 0.8 percent Friday afternoon. J.P. Morgan slashed its number to 1.5 percent from 2 percent. Tom Porcelli of RBC cut his estimate all the way from...
