LANSING, MI - The Michigan Legislature has begun passing right-to-work bills in a historic move that was announced just this morning. The Michigan House voted on House Bill 4054, passing it 58-52 mostly partly-line vote in the Republican-led chamber. The bill goes to the Republican-led Senate, which also is taking up right=to-work legislation today. Bills must pass both chambers and be signed by Gov. Rick Snyder to become law. The vote occurred after Democrats left the House in protest because Republicans would not suspend debate to acknowledge a lawsuit filed to reopen the Capitol, which as closed, according to police,...

After a few post-Hurricane Sandy weeks of new jobless claims hitting over 400,000, it looks as though we´ve settled back into the new and accepted normal of new claims landing somewhere in the 360,000 to 390,000 range. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this week saw 370,000 new claims filed. Keep in mind, though, that it´s only in Barack Obama´s America that we´ve learned to celebrate any number under 400,000. To the point of causing intestinal convulsions, there has been no shortage of analysis on the elections of 2012. Every no-name mop-head mainstream media hack with a niche audience has put in his or her two cents on the finale of perhaps the biggest non-event of the decade and almost every single one of them has been depressingly wrong or completely disingenuous - but perhaps this was to be expected. The word “journalist” has today become synonymous with “whore”, simply because success in the field makes whoredom essential. The job of news outlets is not to report on the facts,...

In 2010, the SHOT Show was roiled by the news of almost two dozen executives arrested in a massive bribery sting. The case has just concluded two years of falling apart with an interesting result: the 22 executives arrested are free and clear, and the FBI's ace informant, who seems to be a shockingly bad bloke even as CIs go, is going up the river on the charges that they were holding over his head. In a slam to human rights in the United States, on Tuesday, Senators unanimously passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) 2013, including potential dictatorial capacity to deploy the U.S. military on U.S. soil to arrest citizens. One amendment to the 2013 version of the defense spending bill unanimously passed Tuesday by the Senate clarified the right to trial of “citizens and permanent legal residents” detained under the relevant sections of the revamped measure, but according to civil and human rights experts, this amendment created the potential for even more rights violations than NDAA 2012. The fiscal-cliff negotiations seem to be foundering on Barack Obama’s insistence on higher tax rates on high earners and House Republican leaders’ insistence on opposing them. The president believes he has a mandate from voters for his position, and House Republicans believe they have a mandate from voters for theirs. The real argument here is over the size and scope of government. Under Barack Obama, federal outlays — the technical term for federal spending — have increased to over 24 percent of gross domestic product. That’s a higher level of federal spending than in any year since 1946, when we...

We are still borrowing more than $1 trillion a year. Barack Obama has added more than $5 trillion to the national debt in his first term alone. Such massive borrowing is unsustainable. Bush’s much smaller deficits were “irresponsible” and “unpatriotic.” Obama himself vowed to cut the budget deficit in half by the end of his first term. Instead, Obama’s annual deficits have never gone below $1 trillion. Three ways to establish a long-term trajectory toward a balanced budget were under discussion....

After dabbling in creationism earlier this month, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., clarified that he does believe that scientists know the Earth is “at least 4.5 billion years old.” “There is no scientific debate on the age of the earth. I mean, it’s established pretty definitively, it’s at least 4.5 billion years old,” Rubio told Mike Allen of Politico. ”I was referring to a theological debate, which is a pretty healthy debate. “The theological debate is, how do you reconcile with what science has definitively established with what you may think your faith teaches,” Rubio continued. “Now for me, actually, when...

You won´t hear much about it elsewhere today. But from some downtown Chicago law offices will come the distinct sound of one more nail being driven into the coffin of Barack Obama´s green energy giveaway loans. A123 Systems will be auctioned off. It´s a Michigan lithium ion battery maker which declared bankruptcy back in October, the same day it cashed another $1 million check from the crack Obama investment team. If someone had told me as a kid in Louisiana that my husband and I would have a combined income of $250,000 a year in our late twenties, I would have been pie-eyed. It sounds like a crazy amount of money. But after taking into account taxes, debt and living expenses in New York City, we’re actually finding it difficult to meet our financial goals. Why Our Taxes Are Nearly Unmanageable Last year, we paid $100,000 in taxes, which is almost exactly 40 percent of what we make. Even though we also paid $22,000 in student loan payments (we have...

Footage of three weapons that were found on a North Korean assassin when he was arrested on the platform of a subway in Seoul in September 2011 were shown on CNN on Monday. The weapons, which would not be out of place in a James Bond film, included what at first glance appears to be a black torch with a wrist strap and the word "police" along one side. Upon closer inspection, however, one end has three holes and each contains a bullet, with a trigger mechanism in the body of the torch. Two of the bullets remain in the...

The Grand Forks County Sheriff's Department has received a federal license to use a miniature helicopter drone as a law enforcement tool across 16 northeastern North Dakota counties. The drone carries a camera and no weapons. It weighs 2 pounds and can easily be carried in a squad car. The drone could have many uses, Sheriff Bob Rost said. Those could include finding lost children or escaped prisoners, monitoring a hazardous material spill or checking flood conditions, according to the Grand Forks Herald.
