  • In Talks on a Budget Deal, Boehner and Obama Stand Alone (Boehner excludes party from negotiations)

    NYT ^ | December 6, 2012 | JONATHAN WEISMAN & PETER BAKER
WASHINGTON — At House Speaker John A. Boehner’s request, Senate leaders and Representative Nancy Pelosi have been excluded from talks to avert a fiscal crisis, leaving it to Mr. Boehner and President Obama alone to find a deal, Congressional aides say. All sides, even the parties excluded, say clearing the negotiating room improves the chance of success. It adds complexity as the two negotiators consult separately with the leaders not in the room. But it also minimizes the number of people who need to say yes to an initial agreement. [Snip] This time, while Mr. Boehner has made himself the...

Americans' outlook on the economy and their finances took a turn for the worse in early December due likely to anxiety about the potential for higher taxes resulting from contentious discussions in Washington over fiscal issues, a survey released on Friday showed. The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's preliminary reading of the overall index on consumer sentiment plunged to 74.5 in early December, the lowest level since August. It was far below November's figure of 82.7 and the median forecast of 82.4 among economists polled by Reuters.

On the very day that Apple announced it will begin building more computers in the United States, a who’s who of the business world called for a major push to educate the next generation of technology workers. Speaking at a forum sponsored by the Daily News and U.S. News & World Report, IBM Vice President Stanley Litow projected that the so-called STEM fields — science, technology, engineering and math — will spawn 14 million new jobs in the near future. But Google Chairman Eric Schmidt warned that the American education system will need a “massive overhaul” for America’s young people...

In an emotional speech as she nears the end of her term of office, Hillary Clinton warned there would be “many sacrifices and losses” before daughters were “valued as sons” across the world, according to reporters traveling with the secretary of state. Clinton, speaking Thursday at Dublin City University in Ireland, was given a humanitarian award by the non-governmental organization Concern Worldwide, whose chief executive Tom Arnold hailed her as “one of the greatest” secretaries of state “in the history of the Republic.”

The "fiscal cliff" deal House Republicans and President Barack Obama are debating can be called many things—the "avoiding a political nightmare" deal or a "Yes, Mr. Obama, may I have another" deal—but please let's stop referring to it as a "deficit reduction" deal. We've yet to see a serious proposal on debt. Actually, by proposing a tax increase for spending with no real corresponding cuts, the president has been arguing for growing deficits. And with a priority on "fairness" over prosperity, any chance of easing the $16 trillion national debt through an economic boom in the near future is improbable....

President Obama seems to have a strategy to terminate all of the Bush tax cuts, not just those for “the rich,” as he has been saying since 2008. He is offering the Republicans exactly zero concessions in the “fiscal cliff” negotiations. No spending cuts, no entitlement reform, no compromise on the rates. It is entirely my way or the highway, and if the Republicans refuse to do everything exactly as he demands, he will let the Bush tax cuts expire entirely, for the middle class and working people as well as the upper incomes, and blame the Republicans for refusing...

George Zimmerman’s attorney, Mark O’Mara, says his client will not accept a plea deal to avoid going to trial on a murder charge in the death of Trayvon Martin. On Thursday, O’Mara told In Session correspondent Jean Casarez that he would not allow his client to accept a plea deal. “I wouldn’t plea someone who is innocent. So I think the answer is pretty easily no,” said O’Mara. Behind the scenes of the fraudulent legal case against George Zimmerman, at the highest reaches of State and FEDERAL law enforcement, the powers that exist are strategically planning how best to walk...

Why wasn't Aldosary deported? Did someone intercede on his behalf? If so, who, and on what grounds? Or was this just another in a seemingly endless line of accommodations to Muslims and Islam by the Obama Administration -- accommodations that were probably designed to show good will and discourage terrorism? We can see from this incident how spectacularly this endeavor has succeeded. Not that anyone in Washington would dare contemplate abandoning it, no matter what the failure rate may be. "Arizona bomber was rejected for citizenship by Homeland Security for 'terrorism-related activity," by Patrick Poole for PJ Media, December 6:...

NRG Energy has abandoned plans for a massive coal-fired electric generating unit between Houston and Dallas, citing poor economics. The 800-megawatt unit would have been an addition to an existing coal plant in Limestone County near Buffalo, and had drawn opposition from environmentalists. The New Jersey-based power producer told the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality last month that it no longer needed environmental permits since it does not plan to proceed with the $1 billion project. The proposed new unit at NRG’s Limestone generating station would have been too costly compared with the potential of a plant running on cheap...

The 2008 and 2012 elections have revealed that an escalating number, perhaps a majority, of Americans are comfortable with the concept of transforming the United States into a Euro-Socialist democracy. While this may be easily sold to an increasingly ill-educated populace by those desirous of capturing political power, the reality is far different when it comes to the price to be paid. A price that is not only monetary but societal as well. Yet there is no party in this nation willing, regardless of the political cost, to confront reality, be brutally honest with the citizenry and stand on principle....

Looks like Sandy was not an issue at all in the November jobs report which beat in both the number of jobs added, at 146,000 on expectations of 85,000, while the unemployment rate declined to 7.7% from 7.9%, where it was expected to post as well. Watch this space next month for prio revisions: September and October saw 49K downward revisions combined. November will suffer the same fate.

The national political barometer has shifted to South Carolina as operatives speculate on who Gov. Nikki Haley will appoint to fulfill the unexpired term of U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint. DeMint announced Thursday that he will resign effective Dec. 31 to lead the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C. Speculation immediately turned to U.S. Rep. Tim Scott, who represents the first congressional district, and other members of the South Carolina congressional delegation including Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-Spartanburg, and to “place holders” — such as Henry McMaster and David Wilkins — who could serve until voters selected a permenant replacement in 2014. During...

ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Police said a man wearing a red mask tried to rob an Asian market in south St. Louis, but fled after a woman scared him off with a gun. Authorities said the suspect on Wednesday walked into the Asian World Market in the 3100 block of Cherokee around 9 a.m. while carrying a white bag. Police said he got a gun out and told Sandy Maniphonh, who was working behind the front counter, to put money in the bag. Maniphonh said she agreed to give him the money and turned. That’s when she grabbed a gun...

When you go up against another group, whether in business or war, you need to know what the other group’s objectives are. What do they really want? In criminal law, this is called motive. If you understand the goal or the motive, then everything else will make sense. What is Barack Obama’s ultimate goal in the fiscal cliff crisis? Barack Obama has laid out several demands. He wants no spending cuts. He wants massive tax increases on the wealthy, which in liberal speak is anyone with a job. But there is one goal he has that trumps them all. What...

Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck died at age 92. The man and his quartet showed sheer genius. My old guitar teacher once sat in with him and it was one of the highlights of his life. Brubeck was a Christian who composed a great deal of sacred music. From David A. Anderson: “I approached the composition as a prayer,” jazz pianist and composer Dave Brubeck said of his “To Hope! A Celebration,” a contemporary setting for the Roman Catholic Mass, “concentrating upon the phrases, trying to probe beneath the surface, hoping to translate into music the powerful words which have grown...

Researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine in November surgically implanted a pacemaker-like device into the brain of a patient in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, the first such operation in the United States. The device, which provides deep brain stimulation and has been used in thousands of people with Parkinson's disease, is seen as a possible means of boosting memory and reversing cognitive decline.*snip*The surgery involves drilling holes into the skull to implant wires into the fornix on either side of the brain. The fornix is a brain pathway instrumental in bringing information to the hippocampus, the portion of the...

Democratic Party leaders, President Obama in particular, are forever telling the country that wealthy Americans are taxed at too low a rate and pay too little in taxes. The need to correct this seeming injustice is framed not simply in terms of fairness. Higher tax rates on the wealthy, we're told, would help balance the budget, allow for more "investment" in America's future and foster better economic growth for all. In support of this claim, like-minded liberal pundits point out that in the 1950s, when America's economic might was at its zenith, the rich faced tax rates as high as...
