The first day of legal marijuana use in Washington State was marred by an attempted robbery ending with two deaths at an alleged pot-growing facility just south of Seattle. The possession of pot became legal in the state Thursday after voters passed a measure decriminalizing it in November. Day two kicked off with more celebrations under the Space Needle tower, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported, but the Pierce County Sheriff's Department investigated an attempted robbery in Puyallup at an alleged growing center foiled by a homeowner who shot two alleged burglars in front of his 9-year-old son. Officers say they arrived...

Deficit already at $292 billion for fiscal 2013By Erik Wasson - 12/07/12 12:28 PM ET The federal budget deficit has reached $292 billion just two months into fiscal 2013, the Congressional Budget Office estimated Friday. That is a fast start for a fiscal year that CBO already predicted will have a deficit of more than $1 trillion — the fifth year in a row that has happened, all under President Obama. The deficit was $172 billion in November, CBO estimates. For October and November, the deficit is $57 billion more than the deficit for the first two months of fiscal...

Mess Attendant First Class Doris "Dorie" Miller was born in Waco, Texas, in 1919, the son of a couple hard-working sharecroppers who had traveled the land working cotton fields. A man who would grow t o be one of the more unlikely heroes on one of America's darkest days, Miller spent every day of his youth on the edge of poverty, just struggling to survive and make ends meet. By the time he was a young man, his family had settled down, working as subsistence farmers, and as soon as he was old enough to push a plow he went to work busting his ass in the fields to make sure his family had enough food to eat. When he wasn't out providing food for his family, he went to school, trampled DBs as the star fullback on his high school team (no small feat in a place like Texas that, as far as I can tell, has always taken their high school football a little bit seriously), and worked nights as a cook at a local restaurant to help make some extra money during the Great Depression. So he was pretty busy. And he didn't have a problem busting his ass like a madman to make sure that shit got done.

Obamacare doesn't go far enough. The government needs to replace private insurance companies in a complete takeover of health care. That’s the system California’s union leaders are pressuring Democrats to create, now that they enjoy supermajorities in both chambers of the state Legislature. And their influence is “tremendous,” according to former Sen. Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, who served as Senate majority leader from 2001 to 2008. “California Teachers Association’s former president referred to them as the fourth, co-equal branch of government,” she said. “Nobody has the political and money war chest that they do.” Read more: http://times247.com/articles/34unions-steer-california-democrats-toward-cliff9#ixzz2EPP6RNs3

According to a rule published Friday by the Internal Revenue Service, some medical devices used in veterinary practices will be hit by Obamacare’s 2.3 percent device tax. Many of their manufacturers are expected to hike prices, meaning higher veterinary costs for the nation’s pet owners. The tax will not hit devices that are used exclusively for veterinary purposes. As negotiations on a deal to avert the "fiscal cliff" enter the final three weeks, Republicans face a stark reality: The American public continues siding with President Barack Obama and Democrats on issues crucial to any potential deal. Polls taken over the past month have continually shown that a post-election bump for the President, combined with the relative unpopularity of Republicans, gives Obama a lot of leverage in the debate. Voters overwhelmingly support the key element of Obama's plan for a deal — raising taxes on incomes above $250,000. They also support blanket entitlement cuts, which is what the GOP...

But the sources say the new decision is driven by pragmatism: The president and his team just wrapped up the most expensive campaign in history — with costs topping $1 billion — and they’ve determined that their donors are simply tapped out. The cost of an Inauguration can run into the tens of millions. Obama spent $47 million in 2009. And raising that in a matter of six weeks is too difficult without throwing open the flood gates, said the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The inaugural fundraising team will be screening each corporate donation. Those determined to...

WASHINGTON, D.C., December 6, 2012, (LifeSiteNews.com) — In a strongly worded judgment a federal judge has ruled that a lawsuit from the Archdiocese of New York against the Obama administration’s HHS mandate may proceed. The Obama administration had argued that the archdiocese’s lawsuit was premature, since the administration may still make adjustments to the mandate that would stop it from having any effect on the archdiocese. After announcing the mandate in February, the Obama administration had announced a “safe harbor” that would prevent the mandate from applying to certain religious employers until August 2013. However, Judge Brian Cogan slapped...

Obama partisans are hailing the "surprising" fall in unemployment as a sign that a recovery is showing strength. But the official metric for unemployment, U-3, counts only people actively looking for jobs, and that is the figure which has declined to 7.7%. Neil Irwin in the Washington Post explains: The jobless rate dropped in large part because the labor force fell by 350,000, suggesting that people gave up looking for work. The number of people saying they had a job actually fell by 122,000. And the Labor Department revised downward its estimates of job creation in September and October by...

Former Albany Middle School teacher and coach James Izumizaki exchanged thousands of flirtatious text messages, photos and videos with an underage student while committing lewd and lascivious acts, according to court documents unsealed Thursday. The popular 28-year-old teacher, who killed himself days after his Sept. 26 arrest, open-mouth kissed the student on multiple occasions on the Albany Middle School campus while fondling the victim over clothes, a detective reported in previously secret court affidavits unsealed at the request of this newspaper. That suspected abuse was just the start of "extremely severe" allegations that have not been publicly released, said attorney...

By Tim Dunkin Many conservatives and liberty lovers have long thought that the Republican Party takes them for granted. We don't get the respect we deserve as the rank-and-file, the foot soldiers who actually try to make things happen for the Party at the local level — running the phones, donating the time and energy, going door to door in canvassing, and turning out to vote. Conservatives believe the Republican Party exists within our two-party system as the vehicle for promoting their views and advancing our agenda. Yet, this rarely seems to happen in practice, at least at the national...

Nechemya Weberman, an unlicensed counselor accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in his care, testified Wednesday that he ripped off a charity he founded ostensibly to help poor Brooklynites. “You used this not-for-profit for personal gain?” asked a Brooklyn prosecutor. “Yes I did,” Weberman replied, admitting that he spent donations meant for his group, B’Lev V’Nefesh, on tuition for his kids’ yeshiva — and that its cash was also spent at stores like BMG Corset & Lingerie. Creepy, sure. But par for the course in New York, where politicians routinely turn nonprofits into personal piggy banks. For example:

More than 2,000 people are gathering at Pearl Harbor on Friday to mark the 71st anniversary of the Japanese attack that killed thousands of people and launched the United States into World War II. Ceremonies get under way with a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m., the exact time the bombing began in 1941. The crew of a Navy guided-missile destroyer will stand on deck while the ship passes the USS Arizona, a battleship that still lies in the harbor where it sank decades ago. Hawaii Air National Guard aircraft will fly overhead in missing man formation. The Navy and...

Saving the planet isn’t easy — or cheap —especially in California. The state’s anti-global-warming cap-and-trade program is the latest gimmick to leave it with yet another big hole to fill in its budget. The Golden State’s new carbon-trading program is the world’s second largest, after the European Union’s. The stated goal is to cut greenhouse-gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 and another 80 percent by 2050. But California held its very first “carbon credit” auction last month — and it was a big disappointment. Under cap-and-trade, regulators set a limit on how much carbon dioxide a business or utility...
