CARVILLE: Since 1944, if we would have been sitting here, Republicans have always craved order. And they've always looked for the lion tail to get behind. We've always been people that we want to fall in love. We're looking for the next argument. This is entirely different. Every Democrat I know says, "God, I hope she runs. We don't need a primary. Let's just go to post with this thing. We don't want to fight with anybody over anything." ### CARVILLE: Yeah, you've got to beat somebody. And the Republicans know that they need a primary. We don't want --...

KRUGMAN: That kills charitable deductions. It hits the middle class hard. If you do it -- if you do it right -- we've done this, right... MATALIN: Are you an economist or a polemicist? (CROSSTALK) KRUGMAN: There's only -- there's only $450 billion that you can get by doing that. MATALIN: Do you want to talk about economy or do you want to talk about polemics? KRUGMAN: No, this is not true. MATALIN: We have two different ways of going forward. We will not have Medicare, we will not have Social Security. You have senior Democrat Dick Durbin saying Social...

Glenn Beck on Wednesday announced that he is teaming up with actor Vince Vaughn to produce a new reality show set to debut next year on Beck's TheBlaze TV. “Pursuit of Truth” will pit 20 documentary filmmakers in a competition for financing and distribution for their film. Beck’s TheBlaze TV, Vaughn and Peter Billingsley’s Wild West Productions and Gary Auerbach’s Go Go Luckey Entertainment are behind the nine episode series, which will launch on TheBlaze TV in spring 2013. "I am proud to announce that Vince Vaughn and I are going to be the executive producers," Beck said on his...
  • The death of tax reform

    Washington Post ^ | December 6 , 2012 | Robert J. Samuelson,
The story behind the story is that “tax reform,” as we know it, is dying. During the 1980s, no major piece of legislation better symbolized bipartisan consensus than the Tax Reform Act of 1986, which was regarded by both liberal and conservative experts as the best tax law since World War II. The basic idea was simple: Reduce tax rates and recover lost revenue by ending (or limiting) tax breaks. The struggle between President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner over the “fiscal cliff” indicates that this beneficial consensus has collapsed. Just the opposite is occurring. ... many politicians support...
  • Sen Coburn: DHS Security Grants not Funding Security Measures

On Dec. 5, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) released a report providing an overview of the $35 million the Department of Homeland Security has spent on grant programs since 2003. Ostensibly, the money was to be spent in a way that enhanced public security. Thus the money is labeled "security spending." However, what Coburn discovered is that the money is often not enhancing security in any way. And because funds are limited, the specious spending Coburn discovered is actually "making our nation less secure by directing scarce dollars to low-priority projects and low-risk areas." In the report, Coburn lists multiple examples...
  • White House could protect middle class from looming tax hikes

White House could protect middle class from looming tax hikes By Peter Schroeder and Bernie Becker - 12/09/12 06:00 AM ET The White House has the power to temporarily protect taxpayers from middle-class tax hikes even as upper income rates rise if Congress does nothing and all of the Bush-era tax rates expire in January. Experts and lawmakers alike agree that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has the power to adjust how much is withheld from paychecks for tax purposes — for all taxpayers or just for some. By doing so, Geithner could ensure paychecks reflect the White House position that...

NYTimes Reporter: 'They Are So Much Cockier Now at the White House' Daniel Halper December 9, 2012 10:49 AM New York Times reporter Helene Cooper explained on Meet the Press that the White House is now "cockier": "I think when you talk about the feeling at the White House, there's a palpable difference now compared to 2011, the summer of 2011," said Cooper. "They are so much cockier right now at the White House than they were a year and a half ago when they were doing this. They really believe they have set out--you come to us, we're not...

I am dealing with a woman who is willing to falsely accuse me of harassment and being a threat to abuse my children. She has used denying visitation of the children against me, and is doing so now by filing an Order of Protection based on false allegations, which denies me visitation until our court date later in December. My current attorney, who was also my divorce attorney, is very passive. He has talked down any ideas I have come up with, and when I push for better advocacy from him, he is quick to mention that he will require...

The U.S. Department of Education (DOE) has launched a federal investigation over a conversation between a Huntsville JROTC instructor and a lesbian student about the Bible and homosexuality. Last April, Virgil Grissom High School student Taylor Sisk, 15, asked a local homosexual activist to file a complaint on her behalf after 1st Sgt. Lynn Vanzandt allegedly told her that he believed the Bible says homosexuality is a sin. It is unclear how the conversation began. Sisk, who leads her school’s Gay-Straight Alliance club, claimed she was talking to another girl about wanting to live in San Francisco when Vanzandt made...

It has not been a good year for America’s armed forces. David Petraeus’s extramarital affair dominated headlines; 25 instructors are under investigation for systematic sexual abuse of cadets at Lackland Air Force Base; and a rash of senior officers—at the rank of colonel or higher—have been reprimanded for serious misconduct. Last month, Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, wrote to all four-star generals and flag officers asking for institutional soul-searching. Has the military’s behavior, he seemed to be asking, threatened the “sacred trust” among top officers, the men and women they lead, and the American people? “I...
  • The Great "HOW TO WIN ELECTIONS" Wars (tea party vs. insiders)

    The Tea Party Tribune ^ | December 4, 2012 | Jonathon Moseley
Almost every challenge facing the Republican Party boils down to one issue: How is it possible for Republicans to win elections? The GOP establishment fights, undermines, lies to, and betrays conservative Americans because GOP insiders do not believe it is possible to win elections on a tea party agenda. We’re looking at everything all wrong. We want Republican leaders to champion our tea party issues. But they can’t. They don’t know how. Conservatives believe that a properly-run campaign based on conservative values will win. More than that, we know it is the only way that a Republican candidate can win....

Right to Work -- allowing every person to choose whether or not to join a union and pay dues — leads to greater personal wealth, freedom, and jobs for workers. Right to Work Works! The New American 14 June 2012 The concept of the right to work is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was drafted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. Article 23.1 declares, “Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favorable conditions of work, and to protection against unemployment.” Article 23.4 goes on to state,...

Hundreds of Saturday afternoon customers at a Sacramento shopping center witnessed a tense three-hour standoff at a Jack in the Box restaurant, which ended with a robbery suspect shot by Sacramento police sharpshooters. ------------------------cut---------------------- Dan Escamilla had just sat down to lunch at El Festival taqueria behind the Jack in the Box. A bail agent from Orange County, he was visiting the area in search of a violent felony fugitive. Still wearing her headset from the drive-through window, a female Jack in the Box employee rushed into the taqueria and said the nearby restaurant was being robbed, Escamilla said. "The...

Police believe the man shot dead during a home invasion in Mississauga early Friday morning was an intruder. The robbery was at a residence on Corkstone Glade, near Rathburn Road and Dixie Road. Police responded to a 911 call just after 12:30 a.m. When they arrived, the suspects were gone and 22-year-old Ibrahim Abukar was found dead. He was alleged to have broken into the home along with the two other men. Peel police said that the men, two of whom were armed, were confronted by the homeowner. A struggle ensued, resulting in Abukar's death.

While I was taking a short break from working this morning and fixing some breakfast, my TV was still on in the background, tuned in to MSNBC. The host of Up With Chris Hayes was holding court over a panel discussion on domestic energy issues, so since that’s pretty much my field I had decided to tune in. The initial discussion had roped in quite a bit of the usual disinformation on natural gas fracking (which appeared to draw heavily on "facts" from fabulist Josh Fox's fictional propaganda piece, Gasland). There was one industry "advocate" included who I wasn't familiar...
  • PDF of full court opinion: "There is no, 'Trust us, changes are coming' clause in the Constitution."

EXCERPT: Moreover, the First Amendment does not require citizens to accept assurances from the government that, if the government later determines it has made a misstep, it will take ameliorative action. There is no, "Trust us, changes are coming" clause in the Constitution. To the contrary, the Bill of Rights itself, and the First Amendment in particular, reflect a degree of skepticism towards governmental self-restraint and self-correction. See Florida Cannabis Action Network, Inc. v. City of Jacksonville, 130 F. Supp. 2d 1358, 1362 (M.D. Fla. 2001) ("The whim, self restraint, or even the well reasoned judgment of a government official...
  • Feds handing NYC kids $30 million for free lunch as Sandy aid — whether they need it or not

Even as the nation teeters on the edge of the fiscal cliff, the feds have found $30 million in extra lunch money to shower on city schoolchildren in the name of hurricane relief. New York City’s 1.1 million public-school students can each get a free school lunch every day in December (and could have last month, too) — even if their homes were undamaged by the superstorm or they have no financial need. Some parents are furious that the feds put this spending ahead of aid for storm victims scrounging for cash to pay for home repair and other basic...

It’s all pray and no play. The Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero that opened with great fanfare a year ago is now an empty space with no community programs. And while the developers behind Park51 insisted for two years that the project was more than a mosque, it now appears to be just that. Dozens of worshipers gather at the site on Park Place Friday for prayer services — but that’s the only activity in the building. Gone are the Arabic classes, workshops in calligraphy, talks on the genealogy of Muslims in America, film screenings and art exhibits. The...
  • Public pension 'spiking': No one's monitoring overtime spiking in Minnesota

It's unknown how many public employees are spiking their pensions by working huge amounts of overtime. The problem is that no one is watching. And that lack of oversight means it is also unclear whether there's any financial impact on Minnesota's public pension funds. Some experts say it's become a pervasive problem nationally, at least among public workers who have the ability to work overtime in their final years before retirement. "It angers those who are playing by the rules," said Ed Siedle, a Florida-based lawyer who has been dubbed the "pension detective" for his work uncovering abuse and fraud....

Even if President Obama succeeds in getting Republicans to agree to tax hikes on the wealthy as part of a “fiscal cliff” deal, the country’s grim budget realities will still cast a long shadow — limiting his ambitions as he begins plotting a second-term agenda. Any agreement is likely to result in less than the $1.6 trillion in new taxes over the next decade that Obama requested in his initial offer to House Republicans, and White House aides are signaling to allies that any new money from taxes would be used almost entirely for deficit reduction — not for ambitious,...
