We have Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota to thank for that bon mot—a play on the name of outgoing Chinese President Hu Jintao—about the country's massive holdings of U.S. Treasury debt. But, while America's dependence on the largess of foreigners is greater than ever, China's role is quietly receding.

  • The devil is in the defaults (Fiscal cliff: 1T in tax hikes in exchange for 122B specified "cuts")

    The Washington Examiner ^ | December 18, 2012 | Conn Carroll
When Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, began negotiations with President Obama over how to resolve the fiscal cliff, he promised conservatives that he would make a principled stand on tax rates. Last Friday, he surrendered those principles by offering Obama a tax rate hike on incomes over $1 million. That concession, along with other measures capping loopholes and deductions, would raise approximately $1 trillion over ten years. In exchange, Obama has now offered to change how the federal government calculates inflation when determining Social Security benefits. How much would this ‘reform’ cut entitlement spending by? $122 billion. Over ten years. That...

What is missing in every gun-control discussion is a "full disclosure" of which politician has a concealed weapons permit, has any guns in his own home, or is protected by armed security guards. Just like the CNBC disclosure regarding touting stocks and the personal holdings of the person touting the stock, we need a "full disclosure" rule regarding armed protection of the politicians who advocate gun control. Under the leadership of House Speaker John Boehner (R.-Ohio), the 112th House of Representatives has thus far approved legislation that has increased the debt of the federal government by $2,176,949,774,695.46—or approximately $18,944 for per American household. The 112th House of Representatives has achieved this in a little more than 20 months time—and it may not be done yet enacting laws to approve new federal borrowing and spending. The 112th House came into power on Jan. 5, 2011, electing Rep. John Boehner as its speaker on that day. The Boehner-led House did not have a direct impact on the fiscal policy...

Since President Barack Obama took the oath of office on January 20, 2009, the share price of firearms manufacturer Sturm, Ruger & Company has increased more than 700 percent. At the close of business on the day of Obama's inauguration, the price of Ruger stock (Ticker: RGR) was $5.48 per share. At the end of the trading day on December 17, 2012, the price of the stock closed at $44.00 per share; an increase of 703 percent in less than four years. But, Ruger isn't the only gun manufacturer that has seen an explosion in its stock value. Smith &...

If you want to see why American politics are so dysfunctional, just take a look at American voters. In a new Washington Post/ABC News poll, there is a broad consensus that Barack Obama and Republicans should reach a compromise to fix the fiscal cliff. Only a third believe that Obama has a mandate to insist on his own policies as an exclusive response to the crisis. And, oh, by the way … spending cuts are unacceptable. In other news, next week Santa Claus will come to deliver a solution, in partnership with the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny: Most Americans...

  • States Give ObamaCare A Massive Vote Of No Confidence

Health Reform: If ObamaCare is such a great idea, why are so many governors — including several Democrats — refusing to play along? What do they know that the administration isn't telling the rest of us? So far, not one part of ObamaCare has worked as planned. Almost immediately, the administration had to distribute huge numbers of waivers to companies because its initial rules would have forced them to drop their low-cost plans. ObamaCare's high-risk pools promised to cover hundreds of thousands, but ended up attracting almost no one. The small-business tax break has been a complete bust. Insurance premiums...
  • Muslim Tory MP: After Britain, Israel is best

It is not often that the Prime Minister is upstaged when he is guest of honour at an official function. It is even more unusual when it is one of his own MPs who is responsible. But this is just what happened when Sajid Javid, the Economic Secretary to the Treasury and MP for Bromsgrove, spoke at the Conservative Friends of Israel “business lunch” on Tuesday. This annual jamboree has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the key events of the year for supporters of Israel. And each year one of the MPs who has been on a...

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut has led the nation to launch into an increasingly bitter argument over gun control laws. As previously reported by The Inquisitr, this has led to a White House petition that demands lawmakers meet “for a bipartisan discussion resulting in a set of laws that regulates how a citizen obtains a gun.” Some have suggested moderate gun reform and others like Obama are pushing for outright gun bans. A new White House petition is saying that the United States should arm the teachers as a solution to school shootings.

Abortions in the United States Total number of abortions in the U.S. 1973-2011: 54.5 million+ 234 abortions per 1,000 live births (according to the Centers for Disease Control) Abortions per year: 1.2 million Abortions per day: 3,288 Abortions per hour: 137 9 abortions every 4 minutes 1 abortion every 26 seconds These statistics include only surgical and medical abortions. Because many contraceptive measures are abortifacients (drugs that induce or cause abortions), it is important not to overlook the number of children killed by chemical abortions. Since 1965, an average of 11 million women have used abortifacient methods of birth control...
  • A Possible Explanation Of Why There Are So Few Female Mass Murderers

Business Insider ^ | 12/18/2012 | Ryu Spaeth, The Week
The emerging profile of Adam Lanza, the suspected shooter in the school massacre in Newtown, Conn., is depressingly familiar. He has been described as being socially awkward and a loner. He reportedly had Asperger's syndrome — a high-performing form of autism — and may have been afflicted by other psychiatric problems. And he was male. His sex almost goes without saying. According to Mother Jones, 62 mass shootings — defined as a single spree that killed at least four people — have been carried out in the U.S. since 1982. Only one was perpetrated by a female. In 2006, Jennifer...

The key to the gun banners’ success will be divide and conquer. If they can convince hunters and householders that assault rifles and high-capacity magazines are “too much,” they will succeed. If gun owners stand together, the Second Amendment will be preserved. If they don’t, it will be endangered. Coming months will show which it is. In the wake of the heartbreaking mass murder at Sandy Hook Elementary, Democrat politicians across the country have pushed hard to capitalize on the tragedy to advance one of their long-held political passions – banning guns. Grandstanding politician after grandstanding politician – some wiping...

Here are some excerpts from a compelling piece written just this year. Madness, Deinstitutionalization & Murder (hat tip I Own the World.) For those of us who came of age in the 1970s, one of the most shocking aspects of the last three decades was the rise of mass public shootings: people who went into public places and murdered complete strangers. Such crimes had taken place before, such as the Texas Tower murders by Charles Whitman in 1966,1 but their rarity meant that they were shocking. Something changed in the 1980s: these senseless mass murders started to happen with...
