  • ICC acquits Congo militia boss of war crimes

The ICC freed Congolese ex-militia chief Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui Tuesday after acquitting him of war crimes in the 2003 deaths of 200 villagers. The verdict has cast doubt over the ICC’s ability to collect evidence of atrocities in faraway conflicts. … The acquittal of Mathieu Ngudjolo Chui on charges including rape, murder and pillage was only the second verdict in the court’s 10-year history and the first time it had cleared a suspect. … Eric Witte, an expert in international law at the Open Society Justice Initiative, said the judgment “will send a worrying signal about the quality of ICC...

Following pressure from a major investor, U.S. private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management is selling gunmaker Freedom Group, whose Bushmaster AR-15 rifle was used in the Connecticut school massacre last week. The California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS) said on Monday it was reviewing its investment with Cerberus in the wake of Friday's shooting, in which a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School and then took his own life. Before going to the school, the gunman, Adam Lanza, 20, shot dead his mother in the home they shared, according to law enforcement officials. In...

The White House on Tuesday rejected House Speaker John Boehner’s call for a fall-back option to avert the looming fiscal crisis, in a move the speaker’s office said “defies common sense.” The feisty exchange came as both sides crept toward a possible middle ground in private talks. But underscoring the differences that remain, the White House resisted Boehner’s bid to craft a “Plan B” just in case those talks fail to yield a compromise before a Jan. 1 deadline—that’s when taxes are set to rise on everyone, followed by a wave of spending cuts. “Every income tax filer in America...

The stealth technology of America's fifth-generation jet fighters, the F-22 and the F-35, could be obsolete after a new discovery from the University of Rochester in New York. One main goal of fifth-generation aircrafts is to slip through skies over enemy lines without being targeted. It's not invisible, but elusive, and digitally feisty. The F-35's lineup of electronic tools, work toward that end, by using a variety of sophisticated and devastating radar defeating moves. From 1900 to the late 1990’s, there were no mass school shootings. Lest it be thought that guns were uncommon in schools, that was not the case. Guns were commonly brought to school for shooting competitions, hunting after school, for teachers to trade or show to each other or their students, or for show and tell. Guns were even made in shop class under the supervision of the shop teacher. Guns were common in gun racks in pickup trucks in the school parking lot. Last Friday, he surrendered those principles by offering Obama a tax rate hike on incomes over $1 million. That concession, along with other measures capping loopholes and deductions, would raise approximately $1 trillion over ten years. Just like the CNBC disclosure regarding touting stocks and the personal holdings of the person touting the stock, we need a "full disclosure" rule regarding armed protection of the politicians who advocate gun control. For those of us who came of age in the 1970s, one of the most shocking aspects of the last three decades was the rise of mass public shootings: people who went into public places and murdered complete strangers. In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, numerous Democrats have called for legislation banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Unfortunately, such bans are empty gestures, certain to offend many law-abiding citizens but highly unlikely to reduce gun violence. Simply put, so-called “assault weapons” are nowhere near the root of the American violence problem. According to FBI data, of the two-thirds of murders that involve firearms, about 69 percent involve handguns rather than rifles or shotguns of any kind. Most estimates place the contribution of assault weapons to gun crime at around 1 or 2 percent. These numbers...

Must every tragic mass shooting bring out the shrill ignorance of "gun control" advocates? The key fallacy of so-called gun control laws is that such laws do not in fact control guns. They simply disarm law-abiding citizens, while people bent on violence find firearms readily available. Only 200 liberals marched to the NRA headquarters in Washington DC today. The Huffington Post reported: Organizers estimated that around 200 people participated in the protest on Monday, including some political staffers who worked nearby and took some personal time to show their support for gun control.

The first I heard of the horrific shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton was from the security guard at the gate returning to my home in Naples. He was in shock, and you could see that he had been crying. I headed to my condo and turned on the TV … and still have trouble believing what I saw --- what had happened. By now all of us – even those who are glued to soap operas and entertainment news shows 24/7 – know the story, so there’s no need to go over the hideous details again....

Even as most Republicans played it safe and initially said little about the politically treacherous issue of gun control, a senior GOP senator has called for a study of both gun violence and mental health issues. Sen. Charles Grassley made his suggestion as formerly pro-gun Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Monday it's now time to place gun control on the table.

Over the weekend, Houston Democrat Precinct Chair John Cobarruvias tweeted, "Can we now shoot the #NRA and everyone who defends them?" This, apparently, is part of what he calls "hard-hitting political commentary" on his blog "Bay Area Houston." Prior to the asinine tweet broaching the subject of shooting NRA members as a solution to gun violence, Cobarruvias had spent some of his "hard-hitting political commentary" mocking conservatives -- or as Cobarruvias himself put it, by "laughing and puking on GOP Tea Baggers."

Following the Six-Day War in 1967, past residents of the Old City in Jerusalem who had been expelled during the War of Independence in 1948 asked for, and were granted a meeting with then Defense Minister Moshe Dayan. They requested permission to return to their homes and property in the Old City, confiscated and occupied by Jordan. Dayan consented, and, as a result, Jerusalem’s Jewish Quarter today flourishes. Simultaneously, past Hevron inhabitants, Jews who had been expelled in 1929, and again in 1936, requested a similar meeting with Dayan, in order to return to their homes in the recently liberated...

TRENTON — They clog rivers and streams, pile up along the shoreline and fill up landfills. And now, under legislation approved yesterday by a Senate panel, plastic shopping bags could end up costing customers five cents apiece at most stores in New Jersey. Under the bill (S812), retailers would be required to charge the fee beginning in 2014, and offer only recyclable paper or plastic bags by 2015. They would also have the option of giving a five-cent credit to customers who packed groceries in their own reusable bags. Money raised by the bill would go toward cleaning Barnegat Bay,...
