  • Boehner tells GOP he’s through with one-on-one Obama talks

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is signaling that at least one thing will change about his leadership during the 113th Congress: He’s telling Republicans he is done with private, one-on-one negotiations with President Obama. During both 2011 and 2012, the Speaker spent weeks shuttling between the Capitol and the White House for meetings with the president in the hopes of striking a grand bargain on the deficit. Those efforts ended in failure, leaving Boehner feeling burned by Obama and, at times, isolated within his conference. In closed-door meetings since leaving the “fiscal cliff” talks two weeks ago, lawmakers and aides say...

The "fiscal cliff" deal approved by the Senate in a 89-8 vote early this morning, and which is under consideration by the House of Representatives today, punishes work and rewards unemployment. The deal fails to renew a payroll tax holiday that had been in effect for two years, with the result that working families could see their tax bill rise by up to $2,000. Meanwhile, the deal extends unemployment benefits for a full year--and as economist Robert Barro has demonstrated, longer benefits lead to higher unemployment. Effectively, Washington has decided to create new penalties for work, and new incentives for...

We’ll see how long this pledge lasts. As part of his New Year’s resolutions, conservative talk host Glenn Beck returned from the holidays with a new policy: no one can mention President Obama anymore on his show. “Anybody who brings him up, besides me, is fired,” Beck said of the new policy. Astonished by the severity, co-host Stu Burguiere asked if staffers could get by with just mentioning that “the president said,” to which Beck said it would be evaluated on a “case-by-case basis.” Instead choosing to refer to the president as “that man” or “that guy,” Beck explained the...

Some 20 settlers entered the Palestinian village of Jalud near the Esh Kodesh outpost on Wednesday night, threw stones at windows and attacked a child, according to security sources. The child was lightly injured and taken to the hospital. Incidents such as this, a security source said, are viewed very seriously. They undermine safety in the area, and divert the IDF and Border Police’s attention, a source said. The source noted that the IDF was still investigating the incident, which stemmed from a land dispute between the Esh Kodesh outpost and nearby Palestinian villages, including Jalud.

House Speaker John Boehner insisted on Wednesday he is committed to passing a Superstorm Sandy disaster aid bill this month after his decision to deny a vote on the package drew scathing criticism from East Coast lawmakers and governors. President Barack Obama urged House Republicans to pass the $60.4 billion measure on Wednesday before the current Congress ends at noon on Thursday and pending legislation expires. … Failure to vote on the Sandy measure was widely condemned by lawmakers from affected states. Taxes for most Americans will still go up this year despite declarations from President Obama and others touting Tuesday night's fiscal crisis deal as a victory for middle-class workers. At the same time, tax relief that was included in the package comes at a cost -- contributing, along with new spending, nearly $4 trillion to the deficit over the next 10 years, adding to the nation's more than $16 trillion debt. But there will be federal tax hikes in 2013. That's because the legislation pushed through the Senate and House on Jan. 1 does nothing to prevent a temporary cut...

With 12 million Americans out of work the government agency responsible for advancing opportunities for profitable employment has gone on a frantic year-end spending spree, doling out tens of millions of dollars to foreign causes that won’t put a dent in the nation’s unemployment crisis. In the last few weeks of 2012, the Obama Department of Labor (DOL) generously dedicated nearly $40 million to global initiatives unlikely to help workers in this country. The money will go to efforts that strengthen unions and help combat child labor in African, central and South American countries. This includes $10 million to combat...

It was these events that changed a situation of political tension into a shooting war. Each of these British abuses provides insights into the scope of the modern Second Amendment. Furious at the December 1773 Boston Tea Party, Parliament in 1774 passed the Coercive Acts. The particular provisions of the Coercive Acts were offensive to Americans, but it was the possibility that the...

But workers will still have to pay at least 2% more in payroll taxes. That's because the government had temporarily lowered the payroll tax rate in 2011 to 4.2% from 6.2%, in an effort to keep more cash in the pockets of Americans and provide a boost to the economy. The tax cut, which applies on the first $113,700 in annual earnings, expired on Monday.

Two-thirds of the worst American massacres of our generation have been at public universities, high schools, and elementary schools. There are both supernatural and natural reasons for this. <p>A top House Republican lashed out at party leaders Wednesday over a decision to end the session without a vote on aid for Superstorm Sandy victims, going so far as to urge constituents to stop donating to congressional Republicans.</p> <p>"I'm saying anyone from New York and New Jersey who contributes one penny to congressional Republicans is out of their minds," Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., told Fox News. "What they did last night was put a knife in the back of New Yorkers and New Jerseyans."</p>

Appearing shortly after the House voted to pass a fiscal cliff deal Tuesday night, President Barack Obama called the bill a "first step" toward deficit reduction, but warned that he will not go through the same battle with Republicans over the debt ceiling. "Thanks to the votes of Democrats and Republicans in Congress I will sign a law that raises taxes on the wealthiest 2% of Americans," Obama said. "Tonight’s agreement further reduces the deficit by raising $620 billion in revenue from the wealthiest households." But, he added, "the fact is, the deficit is still too high." "I believe there's...

Congress agreed to increase taxes on individuals with annual income of $400,000 in exchange for little in the way of spending cuts. “It’s a complete rout by the Democrats,” Krauthammer told Fox News. “Tonight is one of the low points that Republicans have had...

Those are questions. These are our answers ... What's in the fiscal cliff deal? The Tweet-length version of this deal is: No more payroll tax holiday, higher taxes for the super-rich, and we'll figure out the rest later....

The House approved legislation on Tuesday that would block a pay increase for federal workers and members of Congress scheduled to take place in March. Members voted 287-129 in favor of the bill from Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.). Just two Republicans opposed the legislation, and 55 Democrats supported it. Republicans brought the bill up under a suspension of the rules in order to allow for quicker consideration, although that move also required a two-thirds majority vote. The bill is a response to an (executive order) last Friday from President Obama that would end the two-year federal worker pay freeze, and...
