The city of St. Paul doesn’t have direct say over statewide gun laws, but that isn’t stopping city council members from calling for more gun control. At the Wednesday, Jan. 2 council meeting, they amended their annual request to lawmakers to include a crackdown on semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines. They join a chorus of municipal bodies, politicians and Hollywood celebrities clamoring for tighter gun laws in the wake of the horrific school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut. Here’s a look at six proposals being mulled across the country. Some gun enthusiasts are dubious that a ban on semi-automatics would...

Congress is ushering in the new and the old—dozens of eager freshmen determined to change Washington and the harsh reality of another stretch of bitterly divided government. The 113th Congress will convene Thursday at the constitutionally required time of noon for pomp, pageantry and politics as newly elected members of the House and Senate are sworn in and the speaker of the Republican-controlled House is chosen. The traditions come against the backdrop of a mean season that closed out an angry election year. A deal to avert the “fiscal cliff” of big tax increases and spending cuts split the parties...
  • Cliff Deal Only Whets Obama's Appetite For More Taxes

Taxes: Anyone who thinks the fiscal cliff deal will end President Obama's soak-the-rich campaign isn't paying attention. Even before the ink had dried on his $620 billion tax hike, Obama was talking up his desire for more. Obama hinted at this on Sunday on "Meet the Press," when he told David Gregory that "you are not only going to cut your way to prosperity" and that "one of the fallacies" was that "deficit reduction is only a matter of cutting programs." But as the fiscal cliff agreement looked increasingly likely, Obama started talking more specifically about additional tax hikes.

If you own a semi-automatic firearm or detachable magazine, they may be banned, taxed, and registered and you could easily become a felon unless you act NOW Anti-gun legislators led by Senate President John Cullerton and backed by Governor Patrick Quinn (D) substituted and passed sweeping draconian gun and magazine bans in the Senate Public Health Committee today. House Bill 1263, amended to include a ban on many commonly owned firearms passed in this committee by a 6 to 4 vote. House Bill 815, which was amended to include a magazine ban and shooting range restrictions, passed by a 6...

Argentina’s president called on Britain on Thursday to relinquish control of the Falkland Islands, accusing London of taking part in an act of “blatant colonialism” in claiming the wind-swept archipelago. Cristina Fernández de Kirchner published an open letter in the Guardian newspaper urging Prime Minister David Cameron to honor U.N. resolutions which she says backs her case for the return of the islands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas. She has made several similar demands in the past. …

The Illinois Senate could vote as early as tomorrow on a measure to sanction same-sex marriage in the state. One former member of that body has already weighed in: President Barack Obama. “Were the President still in the Illinois State Legislature, he would support this measure that would treat all Illinois couples equally," Obama spokesman Shin Inouye recently told the Chicago Sun-Times. It's unusual for a sitting president to get involved in a state legislative matter (especially, you might argue, a president whose own views on the issue have been unclear until recently). Supporters say it's just another indication that...

Plans to Oust House Speaker Boehner Are Taking Shape 29 December 2012 by Bob Adelmann Following increasing dissatisfaction with House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), staffs of unnamed House members have developed a detailed plan to oust him as the first order of business when the new Congress convenes on Thursday, January 3. Matthew Boyle, writing for Breitbart.com, obtained a copy of the plan with its strategy and tactics laid out in detail. Provided by staffers who demanded anonymity in case the plan backfires, it will be the first issue the House will have to deal with when the Congress returns...

Washington is a wreck, and the fearless secretary of state seems like the only one with her head in the game. No wonder that medical scare left us with a case of the jitters. ... The idea of losing Hillary has seemed especially unbearable at this political moment. It’s as if she has become, literally, the ship of state. She stands for maturity, tenacity, and self-discipline at a time when everyone else in Washington seems to be, in more senses than one, going off a cliff—a parade of bickering, blustering, small-balled hacks bollixing up the nation’s business. She’s a caring...

President Barack Obama won’t be able to enjoy much of a victory lap from his win over congressional Republicans on the fiscal cliff fight. There are about 16.4 trillion reasons why. **SNIP** Former Clinton administration official Alice Rivlin, a member of Obama’s defunct deficit commission, says Obama “understands the [deficit-reduction] issue” but “he’s got to deal with his own left wing, which is not enthusiastic about doing it. The real problem … is that Social Security has become kind of [a] no-no” to liberals. In a video message to his 2012 campaign supporters released Wednesday, Obama offered few specifics on...

Devon Omar Epps, 37, was arrested in December 2011 after the apartment manager went to evict him and discovered the body of Veronica Jones in the bathtub of the unit on E. Channel Street. The jury found Epps guilty of all charges: premeditated murder, use of weapon other than a firearm, rape, murder by torture and corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant. Epps will be back in the San Joaquin County courtroom...

In contrast to more “conservative” polls released Thursday, the weekly poll taken on behalf of Israel Radio by the Geocartographia polling organization shows the solid right trouncing the left, and even the center, in the Knesset elections set for two and a half weeks from now. The poll shows Naftali Bennett's Bayit Yehudi party hitting 18 seats, tied for second largest party with Labor – and shows the Otzma Leyisrael Party, led by MKs Aryeh Eldad and Michael Ben-Ari, as getting six seats in the Knesset. If accurate, the poll indicates that together, Bayit Yehudi and Otzma Leyisrael parties would...

The fiscal cliff deal handed Democrats a tax victory years in the making, but it also means the party will need a new playbook for the budget battles that lie ahead. That’s because many Democrats readily acknowledge that they’ve exhausted their ability to raise taxes on the richest Americans by jacking up their rates. The historic tax agreement passed by Congress this week raises rates on top earners from 35 percent to 39.6 percent. Meanwhile, provisions from the 2010 health care law kicked in Jan. 1, increasing rates on investment income from 15 percent to almost 24 percent for the...

A gunman has opened fire in a village in Switzerland, killing three people and wounding two others, Swiss police say. The attack happened on Wednesday at around 21:00 (20:00 GMT) in the village of Daillon in Valais canton, 100km (60 miles) east of Geneva. The gunman had reportedly been drinking heavily before the shooting. Police dispatched to the scene arrested a suspect who was shot and wounded after he threatened them. "Three victims died at the scene," said Valais police. "Two other people were wounded and hospitalised." They had rushed to the village after calls reporting that several people were...

Light At The End Of The Tunnel For Gold By Frank Holmes 01/02/13 Intuition was telling me something was going on these past few days (of 2012) in the gold market. Our investment team was watching gold and gold stocks take a tumble for no obvious reason. It wasn’t only us who felt this way: many analysts were caught off-guard. One comment from Barclays Research indicated that the week was unusually “brutal … with quite a few confused participants with some seemingly positive aspects of the market not having an impact.” My hunch was realized only days later when Zero...
