By Mr. Curmudgeon:"For once Benjamin consented to break his rule, and read out to her what was written on the wall. There was nothing there now except a single Commandment. It Ran: All Animals Are Equal But Some Animals Are More Equal Than Others."~ George Orwell, Animal Farm.New Year's Day, the U.S. Senate passed a "compromise" bill the media insists deals with the fiscal cliff. According to some estimates, over the next decade the federal government will raise $600 billion in new taxes and increase spending by $330.3 billion. No worries, Harry Reid's Senate Democrats cut about $17 billion from...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose last week, but the data continues to be too distorted by the holidays to offer a clear read of labor market conditions. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 372,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. The prior week's figure was revised to show 12,000 more applications than previously reported. Claims data reported for the week ended December 22 had been artificially depressed by the holidays, which resulted in data for 19 states being estimated. A Labor Department official said claims...

  • Israeli military preparing hospitals for chemical attacks – report

    01/03/2013 6:13:05 AM PST · by Perdogg · 4 replies
Israeli military command is running drills to prepare the country's medical facilities for a variety of security threats, including missile and chemical attacks, the Jerusalem Post reported, quoting a senior IDF source. The preparations include training for hospital staff to manage what the military called “mega-mass casualty incidents” involving 1,000 or more victims. “We train a lot for chemical weapons,” a Home Front Command source said. “This is our business, and only ours. There is no room for error.”
  • Primary care doctors growing scarce [Great Job, Obama]

Roughly 4 million additional Californians are expected to obtain health insurance by 2014 through the federal health law, an expansion that will likely exacerbate the state's doctor shortage and could even squeeze primary care access in the Bay Area, experts say. Even without the Affordable Care Act, a worsening doctor shortage had been forecast as the state's and nation's population ages and grows, and as a generation of older doctors retires. But by mandating that individuals have insurance and expanding Medicaid, the law will extend coverage to an additional 30 million Americans and place a greater strain on the physician...
  • Initial Claims Misses By Most Since Sandy, Reverts To 2012 Average

    01/03/2013 5:59:45 AM PST · by Perdogg · 2 replies
It would seem initial claims can be summed for 2012 in one word, 'average'. This last print of 2012 was almost perfectly at 2012's average of 372, the biggest miss since the first week of November and the Sandy disturbance. Notably, last week's print was revised higher (after 19 states failed to report and were 'guessed at) by 12k jobs to 362k having now risen for 3 weeks in a row (on a seasonally adjusted basis). When we scratch below the surface at non-seasonally-adjusted the numbers are much more concerning than a rampaging equity market would care to note, NSA...

January 2, 2013, (LifeSiteNews.com) – When Alicia Atkins posted a photo taken by her husband during her recent c-section on Facebook, she thought it would only be viewed by a handful of friends. Instead it has drawn the attention of thousands of complete strangers, as well as the media. The remarkable photo shows Alicia’s newborn daughter, Nevaeh (“heaven” spelled backwards) reaching out and grasping the gloved fingers of a doctor. Already the photo has been viewed thousands of times, and is rapidly being shared on Facebook. “We didn’t think we were going to get such positive feedback,” Alicia recently...

The French actor, described by Mr Putin as a successful businessman and friend, has developed close ties with Russia, which has a flat 13% personal income tax rate. He currently appears in an advertisement for Sovietsky Bank's credit card and is prominently featured on the bank's home page. In 2011, he played the lead role in the film Rasputin, a Franco-Russian production about the life of eccentric monk Grigory Rasputin. In addition, Mr Depardieu has also helped raise funds for a children's hospital in St Petersburg.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has granted citizenship to Gerard Depardieu, the French movie star who is quitting his homeland to avoid a tax hike on the rich, the Kremlin said on Thursday. The "Cyrano de Bergerac" actor bought a house across the border in Belgium last year to avoid a new tax rate for millionaires in France planned by Socialist President Francois Hollande but said he could also seek tax exile elsewhere. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Depardieu had applied for citizenship after Putin told reporters last month that he would be welcome in Russia. "The citizenship could not have...
  • Fiscal Cliff Bill Hurts Charities & Donors

The charitable deduction wasn’t dumped off the fiscal cliff, but it was dented in the new law passed by Congress. That bill does not include cuts to your charitable tax deduction that are as big as President Obama proposed in his last budget, but it does trim deductibility for donors. The most important stat is the swag Congress and the President expect to receive by cutting deductions: $152 billion over a decade. Economic growth and wealth creation are vital to the charitable sector’s health, which means punitive taxes will harm charities and wealth creators alike. Too bad so few in...

Several big-name Hollywood stars appear in a new anti-gun public service YouTube video calling for Americans to demand that their elected officials come up with a strategy to curb gun violence. In the video, A-listers like Cameron Diaz, Paul Rudd, and Chris Rock read the names of the sites of the most horrific gun massacres before calling on viewers to “demand a plan” to stop mass shootings. But now a new video called “Demand a Plan – Demand Celebrities Go F*** Themselves” has been created that highlights the gun violence many of these same stars have taken part in in...

... We’re back from vacation and, like many Americans, have been trying to figure out the details of the “fiscal-cliff” deal —one of those classic middle-of-the-night congressional compromises that please virtually no one. The White House, by its own accounting, ended up with $737 billion in deficit reduction, a far cry from the $2 trillion or so that it originally sought. But that hasn’t stopped President Obama from touting the deal as a victory in a campaign-style video for supporters. But a politician who highlights good news often leaves out the bad news. Let’s see what’s missing from Obama’s presentation.

I am bored with politics, refuse to pay attention to the news and am watching only True Crime TV shows and Turner Classic Movies these days. With the Democrats controlling the Senate and presidency, nothing good can possibly come out of Washington for at least another two years. So I thought I'd start the new year with something useful, like a short list of bad inventions. (1) SILENT DISHWASHERS Are people installing dishwashers next to their beds? I've checked my "Top 500 Daily Irritations" list and dishwasher noise is not on it. What possible benefit derives from having a dishwasher...

  • Cliff averted, it’s on to the next fiscal crisis

Onward to the next fiscal crisis. Actually, several of them, potentially. The New Year’s Day deal averting the “fiscal cliff” lays the groundwork for more combustible struggles in Washington over taxes, spending and debt in the next few months. President Barack Obama’s victory on taxes this week was the second, grudging round of piecemeal successes in as many years in chipping away at the nation’s mountainous deficits. Despite the length and intensity of the debate, the deal to raise the top income tax rate on families earning over $450,000 a year—about 1 percent of households—and including only $12 billion in...

The city of St. Paul doesn’t have direct say over statewide gun laws, but that isn’t stopping city council members from calling for more gun control. At the Wednesday, Jan. 2 council meeting, they amended their annual request to lawmakers to include a crackdown on semi-automatic weapons and high capacity magazines. They join a chorus of municipal bodies, politicians and Hollywood celebrities clamoring for tighter gun laws in the wake of the horrific school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut. Here’s a look at six proposals being mulled across the country. Some gun enthusiasts are dubious that a ban on semi-automatics would...

Congress is ushering in the new and the old—dozens of eager freshmen determined to change Washington and the harsh reality of another stretch of bitterly divided government. The 113th Congress will convene Thursday at the constitutionally required time of noon for pomp, pageantry and politics as newly elected members of the House and Senate are sworn in and the speaker of the Republican-controlled House is chosen. The traditions come against the backdrop of a mean season that closed out an angry election year. A deal to avert the “fiscal cliff” of big tax increases and spending cuts split the parties...
  • Cliff Deal Only Whets Obama's Appetite For More Taxes

Taxes: Anyone who thinks the fiscal cliff deal will end President Obama's soak-the-rich campaign isn't paying attention. Even before the ink had dried on his $620 billion tax hike, Obama was talking up his desire for more. Obama hinted at this on Sunday on "Meet the Press," when he told David Gregory that "you are not only going to cut your way to prosperity" and that "one of the fallacies" was that "deficit reduction is only a matter of cutting programs." But as the fiscal cliff agreement looked increasingly likely, Obama started talking more specifically about additional tax hikes.

Police Chief William Clay has banned all on-duty police officers from eating at Denny's Restaurant on South Illinois Street after a detective was asked to remove her gun or leave the restaurant. "All sworn (uniformed/non-uniformed) officers have been prohibited from entering Denny's Restaurant at 1130 South Illinois for any meal or coffee breaks while on duty," Clay said in a released statement. "Additionally, no officers may enter the restaurant off-duty if in uniform."
