  • Obama pal Bill Ayers calls Teach for America 'a fraud'

    FoxNews.com ^ | 1/10/2013 | Garrett Tenney
Weather Underground terrorist-turned-academic and Obama confidant William Ayers is taking up a cause near and dear to teachers unions: bashing a program that sends young, idealistic college grads into the inner city to teach poor kids. The nonprofit Teach for America is a "fraud" whose participants are nothing but “educational tourists,” said Ayers, a onetime associate of President Obama who was a professor in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago before retiring. The 68-year-old firebrand, now a self-styled educational theorist, said the program's young grads are merely passing through the gritty neighborhoods where they serve...
  • Self-professed 'gun nut' Keith Ratliff found fatally shot in the head in suspected homicide

Keith Ratliff was a fervent Second Amendment gun advocate and believed all Americans should be able to possess assault weapons. In a rather macabre bit of irony, a self-professed "gun nut" who was a YouTube channel producer for fellow gun enthusiasts was found fatally shot in the head in his Carnesville, Ga., home on Jan. 3. Police are investigating the case as a homicide. Keith Ratliff, 32, was a channel producer for the popular FPSRussia firearms channel on YouTube, according to FoxNews.com. The channel boasts 3.4 million subscribers and has more than 537 million video views. The videos largely consist...

Thank you for taking the time to contact me about the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. I appreciate hearing from you about this issue. As you know, on December 14, 2012, an individual in Newtown, Connecticut forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School and opened fire on teachers and staff in the building. In total, the perpetrator murdered 20 students between the ages of six and seven years old, as well as six adults, many of whom heroically sought to stop the shooter and save the lives of children. Like many Americans, I was deeply affected by the scope...
  • Biden butts heads with NRA in gun violence drive

    Reuters ^ | January 10, 2013 | Steve Holland
Vice President Joe Biden butted heads with the powerful National Rifle Association on Thursday in his drive to reduce U.S. gun violence, drawing complaints from the lobby group that the White House is trying to limit constitutionally protected gun rights. Biden sat down for about an hour and a half of talks with an NRA representative and officials from other gun owners' groups after telling reporters he is likely to recommend background checks for all gun buyers and a ban on high-capacity ammunition clips. "It is unfortunate that this administration continues to insist on pushing failed solutions to our...

Kristina Lucarelli @KristinaLuca AJ's out at Gawker, Cook's in, the world keeps turning for folks not in NYC media, because they don't know/care who either one is. 10 Jan 13 Reply Retweet Favorite Sigh. We hadn’t really heard of Gawker writer John Cook until just this week, when he made a splash by publishing a two-year-old list of legal, registered gun owners in New York City. Sure, the list was out of date, and the morally questionable stunt had already been pulled by the folks at the Journal News in suburban New York. Cook gave the piece his own special...

A gruesome holiday season exercise: Think of some firearms and accessories that might have added to the body counts of Aurora and Newtown. More starkly, imagine the means by which coming Auroras and Newtowns will be made more deadly. The exercise starts with a militarized baseline, as both shooters unloaded designed-for-damage rounds from high-capacity magazines loaded into assault rifles. Improving their killing efficiency would require one of two things: the ability to shoot more bullets faster, or more time. A fully automatic machine gun would provide the first. More minutes to hunt, meanwhile, might be gained by employing a noise...

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has signed into law a bill granting lifetime Secret Service protection to former presidents and their wives. The measure Obama signed Thursday applies to presidents elected after Jan. 1, 1997, specifically Obama and former President George W. Bush. It reverses a 1994 law that ended Secret Service protection 10 years after a president leaves office. Under that law, the Homeland Security secretary could extend such protection on a temporary basis.

New York has the highest cigarette tax rate of any state, and nearly two-thirds of the state's cigarette market is illegal, announced the think tank Tax Foundation on Thursday. The Tax Foundation said that 60.9% of cigarettes sold in New York State are smuggled in from other states. This makes New York the biggest importer of black market cigarettes, along with the state's highest tax rate of $4.35 per pack. That's compared to Missouri, the state with the lowest rate, of 17 cents per pack. In New York City the tax rate is even higher, adding another $1.50 per pack...

No one forced me, but I finally decided it was time to discover what all the business was about Honey Boo Boo. Even though I’ve made reference to the show featuring a former beauty tot, now 7, and her family, I’d never actually watched a full episode. I still haven’t, but I watched enough to need a jaw adjustment.

Scott Compton, a South Carolina high school teacher, is facing possible dismissal by his school board for stomping on an American flag in three of his classes last month. Compton, who teaches honors English at Chapin High School, has been with the school for seven years, but the tenure of his job is now in question as the Lexington-Richland 5 school board will decide whether or not to dismiss the teacher for his actions. ... Militants Islamist in Mali say they have entered the key central town of Konna, advancing further into government-held territory. This is the most serious fighting since Islamist groups captured the north from government forces in April 2012. The army has not commented on the claim by the Ansar Dine group that its fighters are in Konna. Earlier, it said it had advanced on Douentza, a central town held by another Islamist group. A resident in Douentza said no fighting had so far taken place for control of the town, about 800km (500 miles) north-east of the capital, Bamako. It was...

A new front is opening in the Senate confirmation fight over former Sen. Chuck Hagel as senators from states with nuclear bases are questioning the defense secretary nominee’s role in the Global Zero commission that advocates eliminating all nuclear weapons and making unilateral strategic arms cuts. Six senators with home-state nuclear bases or membership on the Senate Armed Services Committee said they are either opposing Hagel’s nomination or questioning his judgment for backing the international anti-nuclear movement. Hagel is among some 300 international and national public figures supporting the group’s stated goal of seeking “the elimination of all nuclear weapons.”...

As the Obama administration hurries to develop new federal gun restrictions, the Connecticut General Assembly is placing gun legislation on a fast track in the wake of the Newtown school shootings, creating a special committee with an eye toward passage of some legislation in February. House Speaker J. Brendan Sharkey, D-Hamden, said the committee, whose creation has not been finalized or formally announced, will work toward "a relatively rapid bipartisan consensus, and then look to have a special day in our session, probably toward the end of February." The committee likely will consist of the Democratic co-chairs and the ranking...

"Inauguration Day or Judgment Day?"In the early morning hours of Jan. 21, the day President Obama is scheduled to be inaugurated, the Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast will be sounding a powerful warning to Washington, D.C., to – in the words of its keynote speaker – turn from its prideful ways or face the judgment of God. Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, the controversial author of “The Harbinger” – the startling New York Times bestseller that claims the U.S. is receiving the same divine warnings ancient Israel once did … and following the same path to destruction – has been chosen to deliver...

The National Rifle Association met with Vice President Joe Biden Thursday and it did not go well. “We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment,” the group said in a statement released Thursday afternoon. The full statement: The National Rifle Association of America is made up of over 4 million moms and dads, daughters and sons, who are involved in the national conversation about how to prevent a tragedy like Newtown from ever happening again. On a busy road near Gare du Nord station in Paris, sandwiched between a Bengali grocery and a mobile phone shop, the green door of number 147 rue Lafayette did not stand out. Daily Caller ^ | January 10, 2013 | Jeff Poor
On Laura Ingraham’s radio on Thursday, CNBC anchor Larry Kudlow explained why President Barack Obama’s nomination of Jack Lew as the Timothy Geithner’s replacement to head the Treasury Department was a “nutty appointment.” The White House has not decided whether it will submit a budget before Feb. 4 as legally required, and Kudlow pointed to Lew as part of the problem. Kudlow cited Lew’s lack of qualifications as another reason that Obama’s appointment was “completely irresponsible.” “You know, this whole thing is kind of centered around the Senate, which hasn’t done a budget in 1,351 days — so whatever that...
