  • Fitch warns on U.S. rating as debt ceiling fight looms

The United States faces a “material risk” of losing its AAA status if there is a repeat of the wrangling seen in 2011 over raising the country’s self-imposed debt ceiling, credit ratings firm Fitch said on Tuesday. The United States scraped up against its $16.4 trillion debt ceiling on Dec. 31 and is now employing special measures to meet its financial obligations. The Treasury Department said those steps could be exhausted by mid-February. Despite December’s deal by U.S. politicians to avoid the “fiscal cliff” of spending cuts and tax hikes, Fitch’s head of sovereign ratings, David Riley, said pressure on...

The boss of Italian carmaker Fiat has warned that Europe's embattled car industry will 'unravel' unless the European Union steps into co-ordinate urgent cuts in capacity across the continent. Sergio Marchionne, who is also chief executive of US carmaker Chrysler, said that the biggest carmakers in Europe probably lost about €5bn in 2012 as sales in the region fell for a fifth straight year. With sales forecast to decline for a sixth year in 2013, most experts believe that the industry needs to embark on significant retrenchment to better match the weakened state of demand from drivers. Germany’s Bundesbank is to repatriate gold reserves held abroad to tighten control and combat currency crises in the future, pulling a chunk of its holdings from New York and all its bullion from Paris. The move marks an extraodinary breakdown in trust between leading central banks and has set off ferment among gold enthusiasts, with some comparing it with France’s withdrawal of gold from the US under President Charles de Gaulle as the Bretton Woods currency system crumbled in the early 1970s. Handelsblatt said the Bundesbank will announce on Wednesday that it intends to relocate the gold to vaults in...

The former top cop is very old fashioned, and out of touch with modern America.By old fashion, I mean Meese's presumption that America is a nation of laws and not men. That Obama believes he can rule by royal proclamation is a product of supreme confidence; a confidence born of the eroding force of law on government power. As debates over firearms simmer and President Obama mulls sweeping firearm restrictions via executive orders, media personalities like Piers Morgan dismiss guests defending gun rights with contempt. You’d think resistance to disarmament amounts to culpability for the Sandy Hook slaughter. Yet, as John Lott’s bestseller, More Guns, Less Crime, highlights crime rates have tumbled while gun ownership has soared, including permits to carry concealed weapons. America has more murder than many similarly advanced countries, but overall violent crime, save inner-cities plagued by family breakdown, remains below peer nations. The streets in Mr. Morgan’s England are far more dangerous.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A part-time student strode into the office of a longtime administrator at a downtown St. Louis business school Tuesday and shot the man in the chest, creating panic in the school before turning the gun on himself, police said. Both men were in surgery Tuesday afternoon at Saint Louis University Hospital. Police Chief Sam Dotson said he was optimistic both would survive, but a hospital spokesman declined to discuss their conditions. Police did not identify either man, but Dotson said the administrator was a longtime employee in his late 40s. He said the suspect had been...

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources says it's notifying about 5,000 people after an employee accessed their driving and motor vehicle records without authorization. The agency said in a statement Tuesday that the employee is no longer employed by the DNR. Spokesman Chris Niskanen says he can't elaborate on that. The DNR says it has asked the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to investigate. No charges have been filed so far. The DNR says its own investigation found no indication the data was sold, disclosed to others or used for criminal purposes. But the agency is advising the 5,000 affected people...

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), which made the discovery, said the burgers were produced by two processing plants in Ireland, Liffey Meats and Silvercrest Foods, and Dalepak Hambleton in the UK. In nine of the 10 burger samples from the four retailers, and from the Irish chain Dunnes Stores, horse DNA was found at very low levels. However, in one sample, from Tesco, the level of positive DNA indicated horsemeat accounted for 29% relative to the beef content.
