  • 3 injured after shotgun accidentally fires at N.C. gun show

A 12-gauge shotgun loaded with bird shot accidentally discharged Saturday when the owner opened its case at a gun show at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, injuring a retired sheriff's deputy and two other people, police said. The gun owner, a 36-year-old man from Wilmington, North Carolina, was carrying the weapon through security at the show entrance and was unfastening the case on a table, authorities said. The owner planned to sell the shotgun at the show. The deputy suffered a slight injury to his hand and was treated and released at a local hospital, said Joel Keith,...
  • No reason to panic about a dip in the birth rate

    The Boston Globe ^ | December 23, 2012
I have no doubt that Jeff Jacoby’s concern about America is genuine (“Beware the baby bust generation,” Op-ed, Dec. 16). However, I think his panic is misplaced. For one, the birth rate during the baby boom was the aberration. In the late 1970s, America’s total fertility rate was at its lowest, at 1.79 births per woman. It inched back up in the following three decades, and has only recently declined again, to about 1.9. Most likely, this is a function of the economy, and the rate will rise again. The average American woman wants two children — unchanged from the...

This week, people were shocked when the Drudge Report posted a giant picture of Hitler over a headline speculating that the White House will proceed with executive orders to limit access to firearms. The proposed orders are exceedingly tame, but Drudge’s reaction is actually a common conservative response to any invocation of gun control. The NRA, Fox News, Fox News (again), Alex Jones, email chains, Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher, Gun Owners of America, etc., all agree that gun control was critical to Hitler’s rise to power. Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (“America’s most aggressive defender of firearms ownership”)...
  • Heartstopping moment would-be assassin aims gun at Bulgarian opposition leader's head

    The Daily Mail ^ | 19 January 2013 | Richard Hartley-parkinson
A Bulgarian politician today survived an extraordinary assassination attempt when a man stormed the stage and held a gun to his head as he was giving a speech. Fortunately for Ahmed Dogan, leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, the weapon misfired giving him time to react and hit the would-be assassin's hand out of the way. Before he could attempt a second shot the unidentified suspect was tackled to the ground by security guards and delegates attending the conference in Sofia. The unnamed man clearly had a security pass for the Movement for Rights and Freedom party's annual...
  • Poll: NRA more popular than Obama

This matters in a political battle and the NRA can take advantage of there popularity relative to Obama with any wavering members. Newsbusters: Despite constant hammering by the national news media, the National Rifle Association has a favorability rating of 54 percent in the latest Gallup survey, slightly higher than President Obama's rating of 53 percent. While those figures are within the poll's margin of error, they show that the NRA's popularity is in the same range as that of the Democratic president who issued 23 executive orders to accomplish goals the gun-rights group has promised to combat in...

For Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and his top lieutenants, the challenges of balancing the 2014 Senate map and President Barack Obama’s second-term agenda could cause as many headaches as anything Republicans throw at them. Overall, 20 Democratic-held Senate seats are up for grabs next year, versus 13 for Republicans. Democratic incumbents face reelection in solidly red states like Alaska, Arkansas, Louisiana, Montana and South Dakota, all of which Obama lost by double-digit margins in November. A little more than a year after Obama is sworn in to another term, there will be high-profile Senate races in swing states...
  • Obama Seeks "Fuller Understanding" of What Happened in Algeria Siege

    Reuters ^ | Saturday, January 19, 2013 | Matt Spetalnick
President Barack Obama offered on Saturday to provide any assistance the Algerian government needs after a deadly hostage siege at a desert gas plant and said the United States was seeking a "fuller understanding" from Algerian authorities of what took place there. "The thoughts and prayers of the American people are with the families of all those who were killed and injured in the terrorist attack in Algeria," Obama said in his first comments on the hostage crisis. Obama's written statement was issued by the White House after the Algerian army carried out a dramatic final assault to end a...

Official reports from the Algerian interior ministry put the number of deaths following an attack on a gas plant in the Algerian desert at 23 hostages and 32 terrorists. The government also said 107 foreign hostages and 685 Algerian hostages had been released. The deaths came as a result of a four day hostage crisis which ended Saturday in a final assault by Algerian special forces on a group of Islamic terrorists who were holed up, along with the hostages, in a gas facility in the country. .....
  • Op-Ed: Do You Know What is Happening in Mali?

During the third debate of the 2012 presidential campaign, Mitt Romney talked about Mali and the danger al-Qaeda represented there. The Obamamedia laughed and derided Romney, carrying Barack Obama’s water and continued advancing the fraud that Obama had decimated al-Qaeda, even though al-Qaeda affiliated terrorists had taken over an American consulate and killed four Americans in Benghazi, Libya just weeks prior. Surprise!!!! Al-Qaeda in Mali is a serious enough threat that the French, THE FRENCH!, have invaded Mali to fight them there. It looks like Romney was indeed correctly focused on foreign threats, al-Qaeda is not decimated but in fact...

Bugging Out vs. Hunkering Down M.D. Creekmore January 19th, 2013 The Survivalist Blog This article has been contributed by M.D. Creekmore of The Survivalist Blog. The very idea of leaving the security of your home to “bug out” to the woods has never sat well with me – In nearly every instance it’s better to hunker down or “bug in” than to bug out. I mean, why leave the safety and familiar surroundings of your home, for the open and unforgiving wilderness. For many people this is their first line of preparation against disaster, unfortunately, most will end up joining...

In the wake of increased tension with Japan over disputed islands, China’s soldiers have been directed to be ready for a war in 2013 and also win it. Government Chinese media disclosed this in a report. The report also said the soldiers are being prepared to the best possible level and that they are being trained for the purpose. According to reports, in 2012, no such directive- of getting ready for a war and winning it- was given. The Chinese army has also been told to improve its activities and enhance information and intelligence gathering techniques. In 20th century, Japan...
  • Harrisburg’s Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show bans tactical weapons(AR's-now main sponsor pulls out!)

The annual Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show in Harrisburg is banning assault weapons this year. Reed Exhibitions puts on the annual event and made the decision not to include tactical rifles less than a month before the show, much to the chagrin of those who plan to attend. “I think a man ought to be able to have what he wants. If he want an assault rifle for some reason, to hunt with or just target shoot or whatever, I think he should have it without a whole lot of hassle,” said Dennis Hackler, a gun owner. Hackler said heading...

The Seaway Crude Oil Pipeline Co. has taken the biggest step so far toward reducing transportation bottlenecks between the U.S. Midwest and the Gulf Coast, setting the stage for significant changes by mid-2014 that will bring relief to Bakken producers. The 50-50 joint venture by affiliates of Enbridge and Enterprise Products Partners has completed a reversal of 500 miles of the Seaway system, increasing the flow between Cushing, Okla., and Houston to 400,000 barrels per day from 150,000 bpd. The partnership is now targeting 850,000 bpd by the first quarter of 2014 when it introduces a new twin line parallel...

President Obama’s motorcade sported “Taxation Without Representation” license plates for the first time on Saturday. As part of the National Day of Service kicking of a weekend of inaugural events, the president has traveled to the Burrville Elementary School in Northeast Washington to participate in a City Year service project. Three vans in Obama’s motorcade were outfitted with the unique D.C. license plates as the president traveled to the school, according to a White House pool reporter. The reporter said other vehicles in the motorcade had Maryland, Virginia or U.S. government plates. The White House decision earlier this week to...

Bass Reeves, one of the first African Americans to become a Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River, could have been an inspiration for Quentin Tarantino’s fictional character Django. Reeves, who was born a slave, arrested 3,000 felons, killed 14 men and was never shot throughout his 32-year career as a federal lawman. The fearless solider was born into slavery in 1838 in Crawford County, Arkansas, and eventually broke from his owner, George Reeves, to live among the Creek and Seminole Indians.

  • Mexico Seeks to Limit Amount Local Governments May Borrow

Mexico's federal government may limit the amount of debt and the size of deficits that states and municipalities accumulate, as local debt levels have doubled in recent years and a handful of governments have defaulted on debt payments. The proposal is tricky to maneuver because Mexican states are independent federal entities, complete with their own constitutions, and as such they may tap as much nonguaranteed debt as they like. The states do require congressional approval to issue long-term debt backed by their shares of federal tax revenue. Local Mexican governments have limited independent revenue sources, relying instead on transfers from...

President Barack Obama's political operation began asking its wide network of backers Thursday to voice their support for the president's gun violence proposals, the first step in Obama for America's post-campaign iteration. An email from Obama's 2012 campaign manager Jim Messina asks supporters to "stand with President Obama in tackling this critical issue," directing readers to a webpage with a button to express support for Obama's plan, which includes executive actions and legislative proposals to curb gun violence. The appeal comes as Obama for America, the operation formed in 2007 to elect Obama to the White House, transitions from a...
  • Is CNN Correspondent Tom Foreman an Obama Stalker? He Wrote President Letters Every Day

Most people would cut a 13-year-old girl some slack if she became obsessed enough with Justin Bieber to write the teen singer emails and letters all the time, but what if an ostensibly professional journalist were to do the same to a politician? This odd scenario actually is not a hypothetical, however. A CNN correspondent named Tom Foreman has admitted publicly to writing a letter every single day to President Obama for the past four years. Foreman's admission came on the CNN website where he does not really explain why on earth he ever did such a strange, stalkerish thing....
