  • Hagel Hearing: Scarborough So Contemptuous Of Ted Cruz, Won't Mention Him By Name

Sure, Chuck Hagel might have been a bumbling, stumbling mess at his confirmation hearing yesterday. But the real story was how awful were the Republicans who questioned him. That was the collective judgment of today's Morning Joe panel. For example, so contemptuous was Joe Scarborough of Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, that the Morning Joe host announced that he would not even mention him by name. "Clown show" was the panel's operative phrase for the Republican performance. Andrea Mitchell, Mika Brzezinski, Mike Barnicle et al. joined in the Republican roasting. View the video here.

Where’s the senator? A day after allegations swirled that he cavorted with underage hookers in the Dominican Republic, Sen. Robert Menendez played a cat-and-mouse game with reporters. The camera crews parked outside the New Jersey Democrat’s office Thursday never got a glimpse of him. The usually accessible senator managed to avoid reporters almost all day, even as he cast six Senate votes and attended a lunch with Vice President Biden and other Democrats to talk about gun control. The Daily News finally caught up with Menendez as he ducked into an out-of-the-way Capitol elevator with visitors from New Jersey. But...

The launch of a Russian rocket carrying an American communications satellite ended in disaster today after it plunged into the sea 40 seconds after blast-off. Grainy footage of the launch being streamed online was cut shortly after 6.56am GMT when the space-bound vessel got into trouble. The Swiss-based Sea Launch company sent up their Zenit-3SL rocket from the Odyssey Launch Platform in the Pacific Ocean on Friday. However, the vessel – along with its Intelsat 27 telecommunications satellite inside - suffered a failure during the first stage of its flight. It is claimed the rocket’s engines shut off stopped automatically...

After decades of statist policies, ostensibly to make us "safer" (offensively misnamed "Patriot Act," anyone?), the United States is far less the beacon of liberty than it once was. And yet, given the sad state of much of the rest of the world, the U.S. is still about the best place in the world for a freedom loving individual. Gun-hating Americans are working hard to change that, with U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) going so far as trying to sell the public on her forcible citizen disarmament agenda by pointing out that tyrannical countries would respect us more if...

Edward I. Koch, the master showman of City Hall, who parlayed shrewd political instincts and plenty of chutzpah into three tumultuous terms as mayor of New York with all the tenacity, zest and combativeness that personified his city of golden dreams, died Friday morning at age 88. Mr. Koch’s spokesman, George Arzt, said the former mayor died at 2 a.m. from congestive heart failure. He was being treated at New York-Presbyterian Columbia Hospital.

. A bipartisan push intensified Thursday for answers from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives about a flawed storefront sting in Milwaukee. A Journal Sentinel investigation this week exposed a 10-month federal operation marred by a series of mistakes and failures, including an agent's machine gun being stolen and burglars ripping off $35,000 in merchandise from the agency's phony store. Milwaukee police and ATF are still looking for that stolen machine gun, officials said Thursday. "Suffice to say, ATF and the police department both have a keen interest in trying to get that firearm back," said Milwaukee...
  • Durbin disconnect defines Democrat delusions on gun control

Illinois Senator Richard Durbin’s exchange Wednesday with National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre defined the disconnect anti-gun Democrats have with the reality of so-called “universal background checks” and why they won’t stop criminals from obtaining firearms. As quoted in the Seattle Times, and shown in this video, Durbin became engaged in a frustrating debate with LaPierre. The NRA executive told the Senate Judiciary Committee that “My problem with background checks is that you’re never going to get criminals to go through universal background checks.” “You’ll create an enormous federal bureaucracy, unfunded, hitting all the little people in the...

Background: just before the election a story broke alleging that Democratic Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey had taken advantage of the hospitality of one of his campaign contributors to go down to the Dominican Republic (via the aforementioned contributor’s private plane) and use the services of at least two prostitutes (one of whom may or may not have been underage). Worse, he allegedly refused to pay said foreign partially-underaged hookers the full amount that Menendez allegedly promised to pay – and, let me note again this in passing: to patronize a prostitute is hardly a moral act. But if...

A former director of the Minneapolis FBI office sent a letter this week to members of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee denouncing B. Todd Jones' performance as U.S. attorney in Minnesota as they prepare to consider his nomination to director of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Donald E. Oswald, 54, a self-declared Democrat and supporter of President Obama, said he felt "morally compelled" to alert the committee about what he describes as Jones' "atrocious professional reputation within the federal law enforcement community" in Minnesota. "He was, and still remains, a significant impediment for federal law...

In an extraordinary January 24 letter directed at New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and top New York state legislators, the Saratoga County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association has ripped into New York’s rogue government for the tactics they used to unconstitutionally ram the NY SAFE Act through the state legislature into law, intentionally subverting the democratic process. Read the letter in it’s entirety, and gain an understanding of how insurrections and revolutions start. Dear Governor Cuomo, Senators Klein, Marchíone, Skelos, Stewart-Cousins, and Chairman Cox: By this correspondence, the Saratoga County Deputy Sheriffs’ Police Benevolent Association (SCDSPBA) would like to announce...

On Monday, Sens. John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Jeff Flake and Marco Rubio emerged with an offer of a Republican surrender to Barack Obama. We will accept amnesty for 11 million illegal aliens, said the four, but you must get serious about securing the border against yet another invasion. Only after an independent commission agrees the border has been secured will the 11 million be given green cards and put on a path to citizenship. The next day in Las Vegas, Obama, reveling in victory, instructed the four waving their white flags that the defeated do not dictate terms. Get cracking...

Mark Steyn, a nationally-recognized journalist and prominent conservative figure, brought a standing-room-only audience to its feet multiple times during his speech concerning America’s descent into big government Tuesday night at the George Roche Sports Complex. “People can change…and big government can force people to change quicker than you think,” Steyn said. He argued that the American legacy of small government does not render the nation invulnerable to the spread of European-style statist rule. “We have to get serious about the nature and view of government that many, and quite possibly a majority, of American’s now hold,” he said.
