  • Storm knocks out power to 400K in Massachusetts, Plymouth nuclear power plant

    02/09/2013 5:39:50 AM PST · by matt04 · 21 replies
A massive snowstorm packing hurricane-force winds has knocked out power to 400,000 customers in Massachusetts and has shuttered a nuclear power plant. By early Saturday, NStar had reported more than 240,000 customers without power and National Grid had 165,000. Most of the outages are in southeastern Massachusetts and Cape Cod, where wet heavy snow and winds gusting over 75 mph have been reported. One of the outages was the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth, which shut down after losing off-site power. Authorities say there's no threat to public safety. State officials have said about 2,000 utility crews are prepared...

BOSTON (CBS) – Gov. Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency in Massachusetts Friday afternoon for the blizzard that could bring up to 3 feet of snow. He also announced he has signed an executive order to ban all travel on all roads in the state starting at 4 p.m. Friday. There are some exceptions to the ban, including emergency workers, those who work in hospitals and media, and others required to be at their jobs. The governor said rapid snowfall of 2-3 inches per hour will make for, “extremely dangerous conditions,” and will “make safe travel nearly impossible.” This...

According to the arrest report, Mourning failed a roadside sobriety test administered after allegedly speeding in two different areas and not stopping for a red light. The use of a $5-8million helicopter that costs about $2000 per hour to fly, the six overpaid donut munchers inside and the illegal search of an innocent, harmless lady out collecting rocks is a travesty of justice and the American way. Readers loved his speech so much that TheBlaze’s story on it went viral. Euro MPs prompted uproar last night by plotting to try to block the budget deal using a secret ballot so voters cannot hold them to account. It emerged that they are planning to use a little-understood procedure to allow them to vote in private and defy the 27 EU leaders. Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament and former leader of its socialist group, suggested a vote on the budget should be conducted in secret to allow MEPs to break away from prime ministers and party leaders and maximize the chances of it being rejected. A rapid increase in nursery places has led to a generation of violent “little savages”, psychologist Oliver James has warned. James, the best-selling author of books on child-rearing, said ministerial proposals to allow child carers to look after more youngsters would fuel aggression in the under-threes, which would have lasting effects. Shoving youngsters in to nurseries was simply “warehousing” them so that the government could push mothers back to work to reap income for the Exchequer, he argued. … James pointed to a study in America, which tracked youngsters for 15 years. Nevada is widely considered one of the least restrictive states when it comes to gun laws. For example, Nevada has no state gun registry. Only Clark County requires gun registration and only for handguns. Nevada also has no restrictions on the types of guns a person can own and few rules about where someone can carry them. Two events within the last few months confirmed conclusively that local law enforcement in the USA cannot prevent Catholic Church leaders from facilitating predatory priests who sexually abuse children. Documents just released in Los Angeles and others released in Philadelphia a few months earlier show this. Two Cardinals, Mahony and Bevilacqua, oversaw numerous predatory priests who were enabled to continue to abuse children repeatedly even after the Cardinals knew the priests were predators. It is the same old story that played out with Cardinal Law in Boston a decade before and in many other U.S. dioceses since. Local prosecutors beholden...

Sequestration would leave the Air Force with untrained people, a lack of equipment and be "devastating" to the service, officials said Feb. 7. The warning echoes what Department of Defense officials have stated for months about across-the-board defense cuts, in addition to an ongoing continuing resolution. "Now that we're staring at that possibility in less than a month, I can tell you, they were right," said Air Force Vice Chief of Staff, Gen. Larry Spencer, during a media roundtable at the Pentagon. The meeting was aimed at discussing the toll that ongoing fiscal insecurity and looming sequestration are taking on...

The U.S. Navy will delay the refueling of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) for an unknown period because of the uncertain fiscal environment due to the ongoing legislative struggle, the service told Congress in a Friday message obtained by USNI News. Lincoln was scheduled to be moved to Huntington Ingalls Industries’ (HII) Newport News Shipyard later this month to begin the 4-year refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of the ship. “This delay is due to uncertainty in the Fiscal Year 2013 appropriations bill, both in the timing and funding level available for the first full year of...

(CNSNews.com) - A federal advisory committee appointed by the Obama administration to produce a report on climate change says that if Earth’s climate were still “primarily controlled by natural factors”—rather than by man-made global warming—then the next ice age would occur within the next 1,500 years. But now, because of humans, the committee says, the next ice age has been "delayed indefinitely." “Confirmation of what are called Milankovich cycles (cyclical changes in the Earth’s orbit that explain the onset and ending of ice ages) led a few scientists in the 1970s to suggest that the current warm interglacial period might...

Once again demonstrating that Martin Bashir represents the bottom of the admittedly deep MSNBC barrel . . . On his MSNBC show this afternoon, Bashir suggested to a female guest that by his questioning at the Senate confirmation hearing of John Brennan, Senator Marco Rubio sought to demonstrate that he had "very strong testicles." Bashir elicited nervous laughter from guest Karen Finney. View the video here.

On a Sunday afternoon several months ago, I was engaged in one of my favorite religious rituals, watching pro football on television. During a break in the game, I reflexively clicked the “mute” button on the remote control. But my eyes stayed fixed on a startling commercial. The screen showed a balding man with tawny skin and a salt-and-pepper goatee, and seconds later it spelled out his name: Mujahid Abdul-Rashid. The advertisement went on to show him fishing, playing in a yard with two toddlers, and sitting down to a family meal. One week later, again during an N.F.L. game,...
