We’re hearing from the family of a man whose home is at the center of a scary late-night encounter with a total stranger. Police say a man was so intoxicated he thought he was trying to get into his home, which is actually a block away. But the elderly homeowner thought he was a burglar, so he fired a warning shot through his front door. It happened around 1 a.m. Saturday off West Platte Ave in Colorado Springs. A drunken man mistook the house for his. Knocking on the door turned into pounding, then running charges as he tried to...

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week, but still remained at levels consistent with a steady improvement in labor market conditions. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 20,000 to a seasonally adjusted 362,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. The prior week's claims figure was revised to show 1,000 more applications received than previously reported. Economists polled by Reuters had expected first-time applications to rise to 355,000. The increase in claims last week pushed them toward the upper end of their range for this year.

  • Complaints about noise in New Britain (CT) following storm(Nemo)

    02/21/2013 4:48:29 PM PST · by matt04 · 8 replies
New Britain residents complained to city leaders that plows clearing snow throughout the night during Blizzard Charlotte kept them awake. During the storm, plows, dump trucks and payloaders worked almost nonstop for days until the city was cleared of snow. However, that noise did not sit well with residents, who heard it at 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. "That's a little rough," said Al Pienkowski of New Britain. A city council member said he's looking into the current noise ordinance after getting a complaint from a resident the Monday after Blizzard Charlotte hit. She told the council member that for...

Alec Baldwin’s latest squabble with the media may have him in some serious hot water. An NYPD rep told FOX 411 the 54-year-old actor is being investigated following an altercation he allegedly got into with a New York Post photographer. “Our hate crimes task force is reviewing the case,” the rep said. -snip- The duo said they encountered an angry Baldwin who told Palmeri “I want you to choke to death” and fired a racial slur at Miller, who is African American. Miller, who is a retired NYPD detective, told police the actor called him a “coon,” a “drug dealer”...

The mainstream media marches in lockstep with the White House in an attempt to convince the public that good people must give up some of the most effective defensive firearms they can have to protect themselves and their families, because bad people have misused them. A Fox Channel regular noted last month that CNN has become pretty much a 24/7 telethon for “gun control.” Everyone knows that the twisted Adam Lanza was the one who murdered twenty little kids and six helpless adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School, yet few in our society can name Dawn Hochsprung, the courageous principal...

Following Pope Benedict's surprise resignation earlier this month, it didn't take long for conspiracy theories to come out of the woodwork. To a certain extent, this is expected — a Pope hasn't resigned in centuries, and certain aspects of Benedict's time at the top of the Vatican have been controversial — not least the damaging 'VatiLeaks' scandal. Today, Italy's La Repubblica newspaper added fuel to the fire, alleging that Benedict's resignation was prompted by a report prepared by three Cardinals on conflict and corruption in the Vatican — including what it says is the "inappropriate influence" of a gay lobby...

The Real Danger Of The Fed's Easy Monetary Is Not The Risk Of Hyperinflation Comstock PartnersFebruary 21, 2013, 2:56 PMThe Fed's current attempt to control long term rates, "QE to infinity", is based on the hope that by providing cheap money, banking and financial firms will lend and thereby stimulate the economy. This would be a sound plan if the problem with the US economy was a shortage of credit. With corporations holding back cash and depending on productivity gains to drive earnings, the typical recovery scenario where the private sector borrows money for investment and drives job growth and...

States across the country are trying to protect gun ownership from the long arm of Washington by proposing bills declaring that firearms made and kept within their borders are not subject to federal restrictions. Nine states have proposed such legislation since President Obama and fellow Democrats in the Senate began trying to tighten federal gun laws in the wake of several mass shootings that occurred within months of each other. “There’s a lot of momentum,” Montana activist Gary Marbut told FoxNews.com on Monday. Marbut was behind the original Firearms Freedom Act, which says the Commerce Clause allowing Congress to regulate...

Former Sen. Chuck Hagel declined to sign a letter circulated by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in 2007 calling upon then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to press Arab allies of the U.S. to recognize Israel’s right to exist “and not use such recognition as a bargaining chip for future Israeli concessions.” Seventy-nine Senators eventually signed the letter, which was sponsored by Schumer and by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

A homeowner fatally shot a man as he climbed through a window and into his home Monday afternoon, Dallas police say. The shooting took place at a home on the 2200 block of Morrell Avenue at about 4:15 p.m. Police said the homeowner heard a noise inside his residence and shot a man, later identified as 33-year-old Deyfon Pipkins, aka BJ, as he climbed through the window. "The homeowner heard a noise. He came around the corner, saw the individual trying to climb into the window and according to the law, the castle doctrine, he used deadly force," said Sgt....

The federal government has begun visiting employment insurance recipients at home as part of an "examination" being conducted while the program undergoes an overhaul. The majority of individuals selected for a random audit are receiving invitations, in person, to appear at their customary EI interviews as part of the project, which wraps up next month. Some recipients are already on edge, given the changes to the program that have seasonal workers fearing their benefits might be cancelled. ...snip... Chuck Hagel’s archive is housed here at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. But despite his nomination for secretary of defense, reporters, as well as the public writ large, are being denied access to the thousands of papers, speeches, audio and video files, and artifacts in the archive ... university officials yesterday indicated that if Hagel himself were to grant this reporter access to the archives, his request would be granted.

Menendez has hired Matt Miller, a former senior press aide to Attorney General Eric Holder, to try to manage his public perception throughout this scandal. Miller has planted some stories in media outlets like the New York Times and the Washington Post, but has largely failed to fix the senator’s image amid the scandal.

For years, ObamaCare critics focused on its least popular feature — the mandate that everyone buy insurance — taking their fight all the way to the Supreme Court. But as ObamaCare's official launch date approaches, even its backers are beginning to admit that the law could actually create powerful incentives for millions of people and thousands of businesses to drop their coverage, despite the mandate. There is growing concern, for example, that the law's market reforms will cause a huge "rate shock," particularly for those young and healthy.

In a study published online on Feb. 8 by the journal Tobacco Control, researchers from the University of California at San Francisco—using taxpayer funding from the National Cancer Institute—argued that the tobacco industry helped create the Tea Party Movement through a process the researchers called “astroturfing.” “Rather than being purely a grassroots movement, the Tea Party has been influenced by decades of astroturfing by tobacco and other corporate interests to develop a grassroots network to support their corporate agendas, even though their members may not support those agendas,” said the researchers. … Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder of Tea Party Patriots,...
