CHARLOTTE -- Lowe's Motor Speedway and its multi-million dollar NASCAR events could soon drive away from Concord or even the entire Charlotte region. That’s if speedway owner Bruton Smith sticks by his words. Smith is threatening Concord leaders that he will pursue plans to annex LMS out of city limits. He could also pack up shop and move the speedway elsewhere. Smith is fuming over the Concord City Council’s decision to halt construction on land for a drag strip. Speaking with News 14 Carolina, Smith said, "Maybe the mayor and Council don't like racing anymore. I have people right now...

Wally Parks, the driving force behind the National Hot Rod Association, died Sept. 28 at the age of 94."An institution is the lengthened shadow of one man," wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson in a collection of essays 166 years ago. He could have been talking about the NHRA. Emerson's quote was stitched on a quilt presented to Parks by Louise McClelland, wife of longtime NHRA announcer Dave McClelland, at Park’s 90th birthday party four years ago. Parks' shadow stretched much taller than his six-foot four-inch frame across drag racing, lakes racing, automotive publishing and the aftermarket speed parts industry. Parks was...

Force has been airlifted to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas for further treatment. Their Funny Cars got together just as they crossed the finish line after Bernstein clipped the final timing cone. The numbers, although unofficial, showed Force crossing with a 4.863 at 315.34 mph to Bernstein's 4.904...

Top fuel driver Cory McClenathan talks about how he cheated death and survived a fiery crash (May 2) Crash video

BRISTOL – Cory McClenathan cheated death Friday night during the second round of Top Fuel qualifying for the NHRA O’Reilly Thunder Valley Nationals when he walked away from what looked like a devastating crash. Near the end of his run at more than 330 mph McClenathan’s dragster snapped in two right behind the cockpit, went up the air, erupted into a fireball and slammed into the retaining wall. Amazingly and in a testament to the engineering put into an NHRA dragster, McClenathan climbed from the smoldering pile of wreckage himself and was talking to track safety officials before all the...
