Sayfullo Saipov’s neighbors and acquaintances have been coming forward to paint a portrait of the suspected New York City terrorist. One Tampa neighbor casually dropped a remarkable detail deep in a Washington Post story on Wednesday: a group of “about 30 men, young and old, gathered at Saipov’s house to pray” on “most weekends.”

Sen. Bob Menendez is appealing to a higher court during his corruption trial — heaven. The embattled New Jersey Democrat gathered with a circle of clergy members in the hallway of Newark federal court on Thursday to pray, moments after being hammered by a damning closing argument by the prosecution. Menendez and his ordained supporters had just heard Justice Department prosecutor J.P. Cooney tell jurors that a wealthy donor had bribed him.

Four police officers have been indicted by a grand jury on charges ranging from attempted murder to official misconduct for their roles in a high-speed chase that left an innocent man critically injured. The aftermath of the June 4 crash was caught on video and showed at least one Jersey City police officer apparently kicking 28-year-old Miguel Feliz when he emerged from his burning vehicle. Four of the officers involved - MD Khan, Eric Kosinski, Francisco Rodriguez, and Lt. Keith Ludwig - have been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the indictments, officials said.
  • Juror's vacation plans could force Menendez trial to drag on longer

The federal corruption trial of U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez could drag out even longer if the judge hearing the case has to dismiss a juror who's nearing her vacation. U.S. District Judge William Walls on Wednesday warned attorneys on both sides in the bribery trial of the Democratic senator from New Jersey and Florida ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen that he would have to replace a juror if the deliberating panel doesn't reach a verdict by Nov. 10, the start of the female juror's vacation. In scheduling the final stages of the trial, which has stretched into his ninth week, Walls said...

From nj1015.comA total of 138 law enforcement agencies in New Jersey currently have stun guns, or Tasers, on hand, an office spokesman said Wednesday. Officials in the Garden State are now moving to allow ownership and use of stun guns in the aftermath of a successful lawsuit from gun rights advocates. A letter issued by New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino last week provides guidance to law enforcement across New Jersey on the state’s new stun gun laws after the end of a public comment period by state police. While those 18-years of age or older can possess the devices, their use would still be a violation for minors as would the sale of stun guns or Tasers to those underage. Also, use...
  • New Jersey, Don't Go "Sanctuary State"- Vote Guadagno for Governor

Two major gubernatorial elections are on the Election 2017 campaign horizon. I wrote about the Virginia race one week ago. Ed Gillespie is now winning by focusing on Virginians’ day-to-day needs. More importantly, he is also doubling-down on his opposition to illegal immigration, and its deleterious consequences like the rising crime, gang activity, bad traffic, and diminishing quality of life.Across the Chesapeake, another governor’s race is raging. New Jersey, a colonial outpost for Quakers before the American Revolution, has turned into another California-style outpost of the urban-suburban divide, where compacted cities have been out-voting the more conservative rural and suburban...

Tax Reform: What do you call a tax break that delivers 88% of the benefits to upper-income families and subsidizes rich states at the expense of poor ones? If you're a Democrat, you call it a sacred cow. One provision of the Republican's tax-cutting plan that has drawn intense opposition from Democrats is the elimination of state and local tax deductions for those who itemize. ... Fewer than 22% of tax filers even claim the state and local tax deduction, and the vast majority of these are higher-income families. While 78% of those with incomes above $200,000 claim the deduction,...

An overwhelming majority of Sen. Bob MenendezÂ’s constituents (84 percent) want the Democratic senator to resign from office if heÂ’s convicted of the federal bribery and corruption charges heÂ’s currently facing in court alongside his deep-pocketed benefactor. Democratic senators, however, arenÂ’t willing to say whether their colleague should go if convicted.Menendez faces a whopping 14 counts of corruption charges. He allegedly traded luxury vacations, campaign donations, and trips on a cushy private jet from co-defendent Dr. Salomon Melgen for personal favors like securing visas for MelgenÂ’s foreign girlfriends.Menendez claims he is innocent, and apparently has no plans to resign. He...

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Maybe one day they'll finish the renovation project on the Bayonne Bridge. Until then, we're going to have to keep enduring these total closures of the span, including on the weekends, which is a mind-numbingly bad time to shutter the bridge. Not that the Port Authority sees it that way, no matter how much we bang on their cage. We're supposed to have some nice weather this weekend. Mid-70s. Sunny. Lots of folks are going to be out driving. A lot of them are going to be going to New Jersey, either to shop, visit friends...
  • You can still use N.J. driver's license to board airplanes (for now)

    10/20/2017 11:02:28 AM PDT · by SMGFan · 13 replies
New Jersey has gotten another extension to bring its driver's licenses up to federal standards. The one-year reprieve means New Jersey residents can continue to use their driver's licenses for identification to board commercial aircraft until at least Oct. 10, 2018. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday that New Jersey was one of 17 states to receive an extension to meet the requirements of the Real ID act. Real ID establishes minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver's licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the act's minimum standards.

What do severe cuts to core environmental protections and New Jersey's middle class losing federal tax deductions for local property and state income taxes have in common? What's the common thread between climate programs and Obamacare? These key protections and programs are on the chopping block to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent of Americans if the Trump administration and their allies in Congress have their way. Experts with scientific certainty say damage from regular flooding and extreme weather like Harvey, Irma, Irene and Maria will occur with increasing severity and frequency due to human-caused climate change....

Oct. 19 (UPI) -- A New Jersey family who took their dog to be euthanized were shocked to discover five months later that the canine was alive and living with a veterinary worker. Keri and Lonnie Levy said they took their 15-year-old miniature pinscher, Caesar, to be euthanized May 17 at the Briarwood Veterinary Hospital because he was suffering from a long-term illness that left him in declining health with a poor quality of life. "[Keri] picked up the collar. And actually paid her bill and received, even, a letter from the veterinary offices stating their condolences on the loss...

Former President Barack Obama called on fellow Democrats to reject politics of “division” and “fear” while rallying on Thursday at the side of his former ambassador to Germany, who is running for governor in New Jersey. Obama did not mention Republican President Donald Trump in his speech while standing next to Democratic nominee Phil Murphy, but he told the crowd at a Newark hotel that “you can send a message to the country and you will send a message to the world that we are rejecting a politics of division. We are rejecting a politics of fear.” “Some of the...

WAYNE -- The race to replace Chris Christie as New Jersey's governor isn't sleepy any more. That much was clear Wednesday night as Democratic nominee Phil Murphy and Republican nominee Kim Guadagno spent much of their second and final televised debate shooting verbal arrows at each other. The event was held at William Paterson University in Wayne just 20 days before a Nov. 7 election that has often inspired little more than apathy among the state's voters. But if the rivals' first debate was contentious, this one was downright nasty.

Former President Barack Obama is returning to the campaign trail to stump for Democratic gubernatorial candidates in New Jersey and Virginia as they gear up for next month’s elections. Thursday’s events mark the first time the former president is stepping back into the political spotlight since leaving the White House. He is planning more public appearances as the year closes, and preparation for the 2018 midterm elections begins. […] Obama is hoping to sway voters in New Jersey and Virginia, the only two gubernatorial...
