JANUARY 24 Draft Jeb Bush A charismatic and accomplished governor can save the Republican party. Artur Davis In the early months of the election year, a polarizing president with a lackluster approval rating bided his time as the opposition party unraveled. Its nominating fight dissolved into chaos as the establishment front-runner collapsed, and an insurgent with a talent for galvanizing his party’s base surged, despite persistent fears about his electoral appeal beyond the party’s hardcore. A protracted primary fight ensued, with the insurgent and the party’s resistant establishment eviscerating each other for months; by the time it ran its course,...

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is building the largest campaign operation to date in South Carolina, hoping to seize conservative tea party support that could help keep his candidacy alive. After picking up a little steam - and cash - with a number of strong debate performances, the former House Speaker is reviving operations with a nine person-strong staff, the campaign announced on Monday. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and Texas Gov. Rick Perry have the second largest footprint with seven staffers each. Just last week, Bachmann brought on five people, including political strategist Wesley Donehue to lead state strategy and...

Rudy Giuliani has hired a new fund-raiser who used to work for top presidential adviser Karl Rove - the latest sign the former mayor may be eying the White House. Margaret Hoover, 28, made $10,000 last month as the new deputy finance director for Solutions America, Giuliani's federal political action committee, records show. Hoover's résumé includes working on intergovernmental affairs for Rove - widely considered to be the mastermind behind President Bush's two election wins - and working for Bush's 2004 campaign operation. Hoover, the great-granddaughter of former President Herbert Hoover, will report directly to Anne Dickinson, Giuliani's top fund-raiser...

The 2008 presidential election will pit Republican Sen. George Allen of Virginia against Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York, according to a straw poll conducted among conservatives over the weekend. The straw poll was conducted at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Washington, D.C. Sixty-four percent of those surveyed predicted that Clinton will win her party's nomination in 2008. Twenty-two percent thought Allen will win the GOP nomination. The poll asked participants which candidate they believe will win, not necessarily the candidate they hope will win. Clinton led other Democratic hopefuls by a wide margin. The runner-up was...

Opec considers ditching the dollar Algiers- As the US dollar continues its slide against world currencies, should oil, the most valuable global commodity, now be priced in euros? The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (Opec) is having a think about the relative merits of abandoning the greenback for the European single currency, and some analysts expect it to be discussed at the powerful oil cartel's special meeting in Algiers on Tuesday. "I would be surprised if the question was not examined" in Algiers, a source close to Opec said at the cartel's Vienna headquarters. Opec's current secretary general, the Venezuelan...
