  • Washoe County Early Voting Shocker

    10/23/2012 5:41:38 AM PDT · by Perdogg · 8 replies
The vaunted Obama Ground Game has been slain … at least for one day in Washoe County, Nevada. Republicans outpaced Democrats in ballots cast on day 3 of early voting in the 2nd most important county in Nevada with Clark County clearly the top dog. Washoe made up 19% of the Nevada vote in 2008 and was carried by President Obama 55 to 43 — a total of 22, 791 votes. If Mitt Romney is going to win Nevada he must flip Washoe back into the GOP column which was won by George Bush in 2004, 51 to 47. If...

Road Trip: The Effect Of The Hispanic Vote In Las Vegas May Not Stay In Vegas By Bob Sacha & Zach Wise LAS VEGAS—This city has seen more political commercials than anywhere else in 2012, more than anywhere else in the history of presidential campaigns: 73,000 TV ads, according to The New York Times. In an election with only a handful of states that are considered up for grabs, the importance of Nevada's six electoral votes was highlighted when President Barack Obama chose Lake Las Vegas, a golf resort east of here, as the place to spend three days preparing...

Democrats will go into Election Day with a 90,000 voter registration advantage in Nevada, a smaller edge than in 2008 when Barack Obama carried the state. At the close of voter registration this week in the Mountain West swing state, there were 526,986 Democrats and 436,799 Republicans — a difference of 90,187 active voters. In 2008, at the close of registration, Democrats held a statewide advantage of 100,723 voters. While the statewide gap between the parties has closed slightly since 2008 — a year when Democratic registration surged in Nevada and Obama carried the state by 121,000 votes — the...

RGJ) — Sandra Fluke, the woman at the center of a media firestorm earlier this year after Rush Limbaugh called her a “slut,” spoke Saturday in front of about 10 people at the Sak ‘N Save in north Reno. The speech was part of a daylong effort by Democrats to get Northern Nevadans to the polls on the first day of early voting. “I’m trying to do everything I can for an election that I feel is very important. I have a unique opportunity for how I get to do that,” said Fluke, who is coming off recent campaign trips...

  • Nevada Early Voting is Starting and Day One Results Are Out

    10/21/2012 5:22:02 AM PDT · by Perdogg · 18 replies
Early voting is a new phenomenon that is has great implications on the final election outcome. Despite this, I don’t much enjoy blogging it. The numbers get updated sporadically, there is an inherent uncertainty in what the requests or submissions actually mean and the sample sizes are really small. This makes drawing conclusions not much better than just plain old guess work until a critical mass of votes have accumulated. And by that time someone else has already done a better job analyzing the data than I could so I just leave it to them. One of the only reasons...

October 21, 2012 Nevada's Second Largest Daily Drops Obama, Endorses Romney By Daniel Doherty 10/20/2012   On Saturday afternoon, the Reno Gazette-Journal -- the second largest daily newspaper in Nevada -- cut ties with President Barack Obama and endorsed Governor Mitt Romney for President of the United States. Here’s the most salient excerpt from the devastating editorial: However, while he had to contend with a Republican Party that was determined to deny him a second term at any cost, Obama cannot avoid the consequences of poor decisions and misplaced priorities. Foremost among them was his early focus on an...

RENO, Nev. (AP) - Northern Nevada's largest newspaper has endorsed Mitt Romney for president. The Reno Gazette-Journal writes ( ) that the state and nation can't afford four more years of President Barack Obama's leadership. The newspaper acknowledges that Romney "is not without failings," including his "troubling willingness to shift his position on key issues." But it writes that it's hopeful that his willingness to shift positions "is the hallmark of a consensus builder who can work across party lines to govern the country effectively and not political expedience." The Gazette-Journal says Obama in the first two debates has "shown...

President Obama will spend 48 hours campaigning “around the clock” in a frenzied effort to court swing-state voters two weeks before Election Day. “The America Forward Tour,” beginning Wednesday, will take the president through six swing states and three time zones during a 48-hour period, the campaign said in a statement on Saturday. Obama will hold “late night grass roots” events, “meet with volunteers” and “talk to undecided voters” in Iowa, Colorado, Nevada, Florida, Virginia and Ohio on Wednesday and Thursday. Searchlight, Nev. - Nevada Senator Harry Reid issued the following statement after Nevada’s unemployment rate decreased from 12.1 percent in August to 11.8 percent in September: “The reduction in Nevada’s latest unemployment rate is encouraging. We are making progress. At the same time, we must continue efforts to strengthen our state’s middle class and its small business community to ensure all Nevadans have a fair chance to succeed. “Democrats have been working hard to pass common-sense measures that would create jobs, provide tax relief to middle class families, and enable small businesses to innovate and hire new workers. However, Republicans...

Incumbent Republican Dean Heller has opened a seven-point lead over Democratic Congresswoman Shelley Berkley in Nevada’s U.S. Senate race following their second debate and a visit by Bill Clinton to the state on Berkley's behalf. Four percent (4%) like some other candidate, and three percent (3%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.) Long Island was the electoral map has narrowed and Obama’s team, while conceding nothing publicly, is circling the wagons around Ohio, Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada. Plouffe said that Obama remains strong in all four states, but he would not discuss the specifics of internal polling or voter-contact analytics, saying only that Obama has “significant leads” in all four places. It is uncharacteristic of Team Obama to concede any terrain, but Plouffe offered no such assurances about Obama’s position in North Carolina, Virginia, or Florida. Romney advisers have seen big gains in all three states and now consider wins likely,...

Beverly Hoffrichter’s voice is hoarse. For eight hours Hoffrichter, a cocktail waitress at the D, was picketing outside the property with her fellow Culinary Union workers as part of a massive protest outside all nine downtown casinos Saturday. Hundreds came and went in shifts during the protest, but not Hoffrichter. She stayed. Her scratchy voice was the result of hours chanting and shouting — a badge of honor in the larger fight for union workers to make their voices heard. The 3,500 Culinary Union members with jobs downtown were picketing to maintain health and retirement benefits in their contracts.
