Hello, 999, We Need an Ambulance..in Nevada

Emergency operators are used to hearing some pretty bizarre and extraordinary pleas for help. But Kerry Burrows could hardly believe it when she took a 999 call and was asked to send an ambulance to a pregnant woman - 5,000 miles away in Nevada, America. A desperate father-to-be had rung to say his girlfriend was expecting twins and needed urgent help after suffering sudden pains. Stunned Kerry, took the call in Cardiff. She said: "I was expecting him to tell me somewhere in Wales - not the other side of the Atlantic. "The dad-to-be is British but his girlfriend is...

Sarah Palin in Carson City, Nevada

OK folks, here is my report on the Sarah Palin rally held in Carson City, NV on Saturday, September 13, 2008. The day the Palin visit was made, I called the Carson City Republican HQ to get information. The poor woman who answered the phone was tearing her hair out as they had zero information, phones ringing off the hook and people just dropping by. I picked my daughter up from school at 11AM - she's a senior in HS and won't be able to vote in this election (she hasn't forgiven me for having her 6 months too late)....

Palin Draws Crowd on First Solo Swing, Hews to Campaign Script

Sept. 15 (Bloomberg) -- Denny and Melanie Doyal got in line Saturday three hours before Sarah Palin's first solo campaign rally outside Alaska. They were among the latecomers. Terril Tungate was at a Carson City, Nevada, park by 10:30 a.m., seven hours before the Republican vice presidential nominee took the stage. When Palin finished, Tungate emerged from the throng clutching an autographed campaign sign. ``It was the bomb,'' the 52-year-old legal secretary shouted over the cheers. While she's long supported Republican presidential candidate John McCain, Tungate said, ``now it's 10 times better.'' (snip) After the speech, the Nevada crowd stuck...

Palin focuses on women in solo debut

CARSON CITY, Nevada – Sarah Palin made her debut in this swing state with many of the same well-rehearsed lines she’s used to excite Republicans across the country since her rocket rise to political prominence. This time, though, she didn’t have to appear as an opening act. After a week of campaigning side-by-side with John McCain, and often overshadowing him in the process, Palin made her first solo campaign appearance outside Alaska with an upbeat confidence, plainly comfortable being the main attraction. Introduced by Lt. Governor Brian Krolicki as “a hockey mom with attitude” to about 5,000 people in an...

"Why did you ignore Pearl Harbor?" "We didn't forget Pearl Harbor, sir. Indeed we should not forget Pearl Harbor, nor the wonderful sacrifices of the men and women who refused to say "Quit" in the tough years that followed. After that fateful day in 1941, it was nearly 60 years before new enemies found a way to launch an attack of anywhere near equivalent impact on U.S. territory. But the...

Updated 411 Obama vs. McCain Electoral Map Preview 09.09.08

How do things look now? Obama - 273, McCain - 265 So where does the race stand now? We've seen a lot happen in the past 30 days. Obama picked Joe Biden as his VP, we got a pretty successful Democratic convention, McCain picked Sarah Palin as his VP, and we got a pretty successful Republican convention. The end result of everything, at this point, seems to be a slight boost for McCain nationally. However, all polling done in swing states since the end of the conventions indicates that the race remains basically the same. I'm also going to go...

Friday is Jury Rights Day -- Do you know yours?

To grasp why the Bill of Rights leads off by barring Congress from "establishing" any religion, "or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," you must understand that in 18th century England there was no "separation of church and state." The English monarch to this day includes in her title "Fidele Defensor" -- Defender of the Faith. Which helps explain why even our right to a jury trial stems directly from this era. In 1670, it was declared illegal to hold a religious gathering or preach a sermon in England which was not a "Church of England" sermon. Dissident churches, including the...

DeMeo said he received a phone call the previous Friday from an assistant to Dave Hillman, chief of prevention and law enforcement for the California office, informing him officers were planning to implement an interdiction program in Nye County.
I started focusing on the political process in the mid-to-late 80's. For as long as I've been involved, it has been generally accepted that Ronald Reagan's success was keyed to his ability to bring the three legs of the conservative movement to stand together -- the foreign policy, economic, and social conservatives. Today, I believe the Republican and Democrat establishments would love nothing more than for the social conservatives to sit down and shut up, but they know this demographic can still really impact an election. It is harder for social conservatives to win elections by themselves these days. They...

Ensign leads on immigration

The U.S. Senate finally appears to understand that American citizens do not want illegal immigrants rewarded for breaking the law, and Nevada Sen. John Ensign is a big reason why. The economic stimulus bill approved by the Senate Finance Committee last week included a measure that requires tax rebate recipients and dependent children to have valid Social Security numbers. That measure was introduced by Sen. Ensign after he pointed out that the rebate legislation, if not amended, would allow illegal immigrants working under fraudulent taxpayer identification numbers to receive checks. "I am not sure the American taxpayer would like people...

Ending earmarks

Do voters really demand pork from their representatives? The Sisyphean challenge of ending congressional pork spending has precious few takers. Fewer than two dozen principled lawmakers are just saying no to earmarks, even as hundreds of their colleagues engorge themselves and their districts on billions of dollars worth of profligate projects every year. But more and more members of Congress are finding a conscience. They're finally recognizing that pork spending grows the budget deficit, and that wasteful appropriations amid a sinking economy are an affront to taxpayers living paycheck to paycheck. Lawmakers cannot legitimately cry about a lack of funding...

HENDERSON, Nev. - While his main rivals slugged it out yesterday across South Carolina, fighting for an edge in today's hotly contested primary, Mitt Romney hopscotched around Nevada, angling to win a lower-profile contest today that could bring a bigger reward. Focusing on Nevada and downplaying South Carolina is a gamble, but one that appeared more savvy yesterday with the publication of a new poll indicating that Romney has a 15-percentage-point lead.
Rolling the Dice in Vegas (Romney Strategy)

Judging from his campaign schedule and media reports, it appears the Romney campaign has decided to cut paid media, dial back any last-minute campaigning in South Carolina, and try to survive a likely third-place finish there by winning Saturday's Nevada caucus. It's an understandable move, but a risky one that may prove to be a big strategic mistake in the overall race. First, it means Romney must now win Nevada. He is favored there - he's well organized and southern Nevada has a large LDS population - but you never know for sure in a caucus. Second, by pulling back...

It's quite understandable why Mr. Lanni took time to address this important public policy issue; after all, there are at least two ballot initiatives being readied to sock the gaming industry with a huge new tax hike. But in many ways, gaming has only itself to blame. The industry has been appeasing the Big Government crowd for decades now by supporting one tax hike after another, as Mr. Lanni himself acknowledged in his remarks.
