The health-care law’s treatment of larger employers is almost laughably complicated. If you’ve got fewer than 50 employees, nothing is asked of you, and if you’re willing to provide insurance for your employees, you get a giant tax credit, at least for awhile. But if you’re a business with more than 50 full-time employees, matters become considerably more complex. If you’ve got more than 50 full-time employees and you already offer them health insurance, you can stop reading now. You’re in the clear. If you’ve got more than 50 full-time employees and you don’t offer them coverage and you don’t...

Oklahoma is latest to reject state-based health exchangeBy Sam Baker - 11/19/12 03:23 PM ET Add Oklahoma to the list of Republican-led states that won't implement the key feature of President Obama's healthcare law. Gov. Mary Fallin said Monday that she won't set up a state-based insurance exchange — a new portal where people who don't get insurance through their employers can shop for coverage, often with help from a federal subsidy. "It does not benefit Oklahoma taxpayers to actively support and fund a new government program that will ultimately be under the control of the federal government, that is...

For the first time in its nearly 100-year history, Orlando Health is reducing its workforce by up to 400 positions starting immediately, hospital officials announced this morning. The elimination of 300 to 400 jobs will occur in two phases, and represents a 2- to 3-percent decrease in the system's 16,000 employees, said Orlando Health spokeswoman Kena Lewis. The reductions affect all departments and all eight of its hospitals, including Orlando Regional Medical Center and Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. The first wave of employees affected by the "labor expense reduction" portion of the initiative received their notices Friday, said Lewis....

Bad news for GE Healthcare workers in Vermont. The company, which specializes in information technology for the healthcare industry, announced last Thursday that it plans to lay off about 10 percent of its workforce in the state. The company promised, however, to try to find “alternate roles” for those who lose their jobs. “While GE Healthcare regrets the loss of any jobs, the business needs to make tough decisions in the current economic climate,” company spokesman Benjamin Fox told the Barre Montpelier Times Argus. It’s unclear at this time how much of GE Healthcare’s workforce these cuts represent, though the...

Champions of ObamaCare want Americans to believe that the president's re-election ended the battle over the law. It did no such thing. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act won't be fully repealed while Barack Obama is in office, but the administration is heavily dependent on the states for its implementation. Republicans will hold 30 governorships starting in January, and at last week's meeting of the Republican Governors Association they made it clear that they remain highly critical of the health law. Some Republican governors—including incoming RGA Chairman Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Ohio's John Kasich, Wisconsin's Scott Walker and Maine's...

Ten, nine, eight… what do you appreciate? When life seems crazy or hopeless, count your blessings backwards—that is, find something to be thankful for in the midst of darkness. It is reverse psychology for adults. Think of the most onerous regulation or politician in your life and find one reason you are thankful for this trial. For example, President Obama’s reelection could be an opportunity for you to develop a stronger character or feel greater motivation to achieve your goals. This is an uplifting mental exercise, particularly during Thanksgiving week. Here are a few more examples: Challenge: Weak military leadersAmericans...

Opponents of the HHS contraception mandate got good news late on Friday ---- another plaintiff won a preliminary injunction against its enforcement on Friday in federal court. The Obama administration had attempted to argue that Tyndale House Publishers didn't meet its standards to claim a religious exemption, but according to LifeNew' report, that argument didn't impress a federal judge --- even though Tyndale has no explicit connection to a church: In its opinion accompanying a preliminary injunction order in Tyndale House Publishers v. Sebelius, the court wrote that “the beliefs of Tyndale and its owners are indistinguishable…. Christian principles, prayer,...

A relative who cared for her elderly mother, just deceased, is dealing with the various medical bills from the hospital and doctors. She sees on all of the statements now, a check off to be marked by the provider, certifying something to the effect that the treatment was "consistent with and appropriate for, the age of the patient". She says she never saw those before in all her years of caring for her mother. Is this part of Obamacare beginning to limit medical care for our elderly?

I went to buy some Ho Ho’s but they were gone, and so was a part of America. When I heard that Hostess was declaring bankruptcy it made me sad. Probably not as sad at the 18,000 people that used to work for them but it did affect me. Oh, I knew that I was partly to blame. When I was a child I would gobble down Ho Ho’s and chocolate cupcakes with abandon. I could burn through a half of a box of Ho Ho’s and a half gallon of Vitamin D milk in about 15 minutes. My elementary...

How ObamaCare will keep unemployment high — by forcing small companies to cut their workforce to fewer than 50 peopleBy MICHAEL TANNER Last Updated: 4:32 AM, November 18, 2012 **SNIP** Under ObamaCare, employers with 50 or more full-time workers must provide health insurance for all their workers, paying at least 65% of the cost of a family policy or 85% of the cost of an individual plan. Moreover, the insurance must meet the federal government’s requirements in terms of what benefits are included, meaning that many businesses that offer insurance to their workers today will have to change to new,...

The reelection of Pres. Barack Obama has basically killed the momentum to overturn Obamacare. Now businesses are scrambling to deal with the 20 or more higher taxes as a result of the legislation, ranging from a $123 billion surtax on investment income to the $20 billion medical device tax. A number of companies have announced layoffs as a result of the new taxes associated with the health care law. Welch Allyn, a company that manufactures medical diagnostic equipment in New York, announced a layoff of 275 employees, about 10 percent of their workforce, over the next three years. Dana Holding...

One of the nation's largest HMOs is laying off 530 employees in Southern California this weekend, including some in San Diego County, a company official confirmed Saturday. Kaiser Permanente said the layoffs -- constituting about eight-tenths of one percent of it employees -- would be spread across its 65,700 employees and doctors working in offices and hospitals from Kern County to the Mexican border. Under its union contracts, the laid-off employees who are in unions will get income and benefits for a year. many may also be rehired next year, when Kaiser Permanente expects "significant membership growth" next year. Full time work is about to get scarcer. The reason? By hiring part-time workers who put in less than 30 hours per week, employers can avoid a mandate dictated by the new health reform law: either provide expensive health insurance or pay a fine equal to $2,000 per worker. Avoiding the mandate becomes even more attractive for low-wage employees, since they can get highly subsidized insurance in the newly created health insurance exchanges. According to the Wall Street Journal: • Darden Restaurants [parent of Red Lobster and Olive Garden] was among the first companies to say it was changing hiring...

Five Republican governors rejected on Friday a major provision of President Barack Obama's healthcare reform law that calls on U.S. states to set up online health insurance markets where consumers can purchase private coverage at federally subsidized rates. That makes it likely that the federal government will establish its own markets, known as healthcare exchanges, in those states and potentially supplant state control of private individual insurance markets. But in what could be a sign of thawing relations between administration officials and some state Republican leaders, three of the five governors -- representing Ohio, Michigan and Florida -- expressed a...
