President Barack Obama explained in an interview with BuzzFeed that he thinks Russian President Vladimir Putin views everything through a Cold War lens. BuzzFeed pointed out to the president that Obama had a good relationship with former president and current Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, but that relations with Russia are now at their worst since the Cold War.

The US President vowed to “ratchet up pressure on Russia” amid fears the fighting in eastern Europe is worsening by the day. Barack Obama today threatened to use all measures - short of military action - to force Vladimir Putin to back down over the Ukraine crisis. He vowed to “ratchet up pressure on Russia” amid fears the fighting in eastern Europe is worsening by the day. He also warned Putin was “hell-bent on engaging in military conflicts” regardless of the damage it caused to Russians with its sanctions-hit economy nosediving into recession. The US leader spoke out in India...

“Russia’s actions in Ukraine challenge [the] postwar order,” he said. That was not what the Russians wanted to hear from the president. Moscow’s U.N. ambassador, Vitaly Churkin, sank deep in his chair, and its foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, looked on stony-faced. “Russia poured arms into Eastern Ukraine, fueling violent separatists and a conflict that has killed thousands,” Obama said. “When Ukraine started to reassert control over its territory, Russia gave up the pretense of merely supporting the separatists and moved troops across the border.” The president was not finished. “This is a vision of the world in which might makes...
  • Moscow may walk out of nuclear treaty after US accusations of breach

Russia may be on the point of walking out of a major cold war era arms-control treaty, Russian analysts have said, after President Obama accused Moscow of violating the accord by testing a cruise missile. There has been evidence at least since 2011 of Russian missile tests in violation of the 1987 intermediate range nuclear forces (INF) treaty, which banned US or Russian ground-launched cruise missiles with a 500 to 5,500-mile (805 to 8,851km) range. But the Obama administration has been hesitant until now of accusing Moscow of a violation in the hope that it could persuade Vladimir Putin, the...

As new U.S. sanctions against Russia loom, the Kremlin has shut down—at least for now—intensive high level communications between top U.S. and Russian officials. Since the invasion of Crimea, President Vladimir Putin and President Barack Obama have had regular phone calls in an often half-hearted attempt to deescalate the ongoing crisis inside Ukraine. But as the U.S. and EU prepare to unveil new sanctions against Russia, Putin has decided the interactions should stop. The Kremlin has ended high-level contact with the Obama administration, according to diplomatic officials and sources close to the Russian leadership. The move signals an end to...
  • Protest crackdown in Slavyansk put on hold - Ukrainian Media

A special operation against pro-federalization protesters in the eastern Ukrainian city of Slavyansk has been put on hold, Ukrainian media said Thursday citing law enforcement sources. Kiev Post said the decision was made by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), and the authorities are now revising the plan of the operation. The Kiev-based paper also said that at least seven people were killed in the crackdown on protesters, who have been demanding greater autonomy for their regions since late March. Federalization supporters in the eastern cities of Kharkov, Donetsk, Gorlovka, Slavyansk and Kramatorsk have refused to recognize the legitimacy of...

KIEV, Ukraine — The Ukrainian government dispatched its highest-level police and security officials to the eastern part of the country Monday in an effort to put down separatist violence described as inspired by Russia and following a script that played out in Crimea. “The plan is to destabilize the situation,” Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk told an emergency cabinet meeting Monday morning. “The plan is for foreign troops to cross the border and seize the country’s territory, which we will not allow.” On Sunday, pro-Russian demonstrations in the eastern cities of Kharkiv, Donetsk and Luhansk that had been orderly the last...

War is what Obama does best. The War on Women. War on Poverty. Class War. Race War. Walk up to a union member snoozing on a bus, a Latino man crossing the street, a gay cowboy poet earning minimum wage, and community organize him along with a few hundred thousand others into the latest battle in the social justice war that never ends. “Fight for card check, for birth control, for gay marriage and illegal alien amnesty.” Every time a battle is won and an election ends, a new source of social conflict is dug up and deployed for war....

One of the biggest divisions in the conservative movement right now is how to respond to Vladimir Putin's aggression in the Ukraine. On the one hand are the neo-cons who apparently want to flex America's muscles and open a new Cold War; on the other are the neo-isolationists who believe that this is a quarrel in a far-away country between people of whom we know nothing.

President Obama emphasized that Russia’s actions are in violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which has led us to take several steps in response, in coordination with our European partners. President Obama indicated that there is a way to resolve the situation diplomatically, which addresses the interests of Russia, the people of Ukraine, and the international community. MOSCOW/SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine (Reuters) - Russia said on Friday any U.S. sanctions imposed against Moscow over the crisis in Ukraine would boomerang back on the United States, raising the financial stakes as the military standoff intensified. In a telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned against "hasty and reckless steps" that could harm Rssian-American relations, the foreign ministry said. "Sanctions...would inevitably hit the United States like a boomerang," it added. It was the second tense, high-level exchange between the former Cold War foes in 24 hours.

The Annotated Obama MAR 1, 2014 • BY WILLIAM KRISTOL President Obama spoke for 90 minutes this afternoon with President Putin of Russia about the situation in Ukraine. President Obama expressed his deep concern over Russia’s clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is a breach of international law, including Russia’s obligations under the UN Charter, and of its 1997 military basing agreement with Ukraine, and which is inconsistent with the 1994 Budapest Memorandum and the Helsinki Final Act. The United States condemns Russia’s military intervention into Ukrainian territory. Commentary: President Obama told President Putin that Russia had...

Last week the West focused on Syria and Putin focused on a better economy for the world. The Obama fly kept getting into Putin's eye but he would knock it away when necessary. The question is why is Obama in any economic meeting? He can't fix the economic debt in America. Even with a Democratic majority in both the House and the Senate from 2008 thru 2010 nothing was done. He didn't take notes at last year's G20 in Mexico and I don't see him being inspired by Putin's economic strategies this year. Strategies like less taxes, no wars, etc.....

UNITED NATIONS - The United States on Thursday accused Russia of holding the UN Security Council "hostage" over the Syria chemical weapons crisis. With the White House pushing Congress to approve military strikes on Syria, US ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power said she could see no way to seek Security Council approval for action against President Bashar al-Assad because of Russia's blocking. Amid mounting tensions between Washington and Moscow, Power said Russia's protection of Assad has put the whole Security Council system of handling international crises under strain. "Even in the wake of the flagrant shattering of the...
