Federal employees, like all Americans, are entitled to hold passionate political beliefs. Most executive branch federal employees, however, may not engage in certain political activities, thanks to an anti-conflict of interest principle enshrined in a federal law called the Hatch Act. To wit, President Bush requested the resignation of his GSA administrator in 2008 after the US Office of Special Counsel determined she had violated federal law by participating in a video conference with Karl Rove and sending out partisan letters. (The New York Times was scandalized at the time, though I strangely can´t find their editorial calling for Kathleen

Monday through Friday, my full-time job is cleaning restrooms at Van Nuys High School. But that work is not the hardest part of my life. The hardest part is saying goodbye to my 4-year-old son when he asks me not to go to work again. In order to make ends meet, I also work weekends and nights. I’ve done that for 10 years, and some days are better than others, but I like the work, and my co-workers are a...

National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden has found the court of public opinion to be far more receptive than a court of law. He conducts the occasional interview with seemingly sympathetic journalists. NBC News aired one such interview with anchorman Brian Williams on Wednesday night. "Do you see yourself as a patriot?" Williams asked. "I do," answered Snowden, now 30. He was just trying to protect the country and the Constitution "from the encroachment of adversaries -- and those adversaries don't have to be foreign countries." Dianne Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, was having none of it. "In...

The return of Benghazi is the latest evidence that the GOP is putting its unhinged obsessions before the good of the country. Back in March 2013, I wrote a column titled, "Why I am no longer a Republican." A more accurate (though admittedly more ponderous) title would have been, "One important reason among many that I am no longer a Republican." A policy at a new restaurant owned by country music star Toby Keith has some gun owners singing the blues. According to WTTG Fox 5, Keith's new restaurant in Woodbridge, Va., displays a sign on the front door that reads, "NO GUNS PERMITTED." Virginia is a gun-friendly state, the station reports, and citizens are allowed to openly carry a weapon into a bar or restaurant, as long as it's clearly visible. A sign on a restaurant door that reads “No Guns Permitted” isn’t likely to turn many heads at most restaurants. But when the other, bigger sign heralding the name of the establishment reads “Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill,” you can bet a few feathers are getting ruffled. And indeed that’s one of the biggest reactions since the country music star’s restaurant opened last week in Woodbridge, Va., a Washington, D.C. suburb about a half hour south of the nation’s capital. The big sticking point is that gun-rights advocates note that Virginia law lets citizens enter restaurants and bars...

Anyone familiar with the Snowden story will understand why Rubio's comments are misleading. It's a punishment as old as mankind: shame. A judge has ordered an Ohio woman, who drove on a sidewalk to get around a school bus, to wear a sign that reads “only an idiot drives on the sidewalk to avoid a school bus.” Chris Tritico, president of the Harris County Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, says he likes the creative sentencing. "You know in some respects it's really not a bad deal sometimes." Tritico says it also serves as a deterrent. "I think it clearly sends a message to other people who might wanna be as stupid as this person...

But local residents say they have seen him prowling around their houses, and are intimidated by his aggressive behaviour. The inhabitants of an apartment complex at...

Videographer James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas caught an official for President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign helping who she thought was an Obama supporter set herself up to vote more than once in November. Stephanie Caballero is the regional field director for Obama’s Organizing For America in Houston, Texas. Federal Election Commission documents show, according to Project Veritas, that Caballero is a “salaried employee of the DNC [Democratic National Committee].” Caballero is caught on camera helping the young woman try to vote in Florida and Texas in the upcoming election.

  • Is It Me - Or Has "Early Voting" Gotten Out Of Hand? [Vanity]

IMHO, early voting has gotten WAAAAAY out of hand. Being given a month to vote is overkill - if something should happen to change your mind in the interim, TOO BAD. The deed is done. I think that a voting weekend might be appropriate, plenty of time - and if you want to vote early for any reason, you have to vote absentee. Either that, or having the option to change your early vote right up to Election Day ... Any thoughts?

Ex-prof gets life in prison for meeting rampage HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A former university professor has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for killing three of her colleagues and wounding three others during a faculty meeting. Amy Bishop, a former professor at the University of Alabama in Hunstville, showed no reaction as the verdict was read. Circuit Judge Alan Mann then imposed the life sentence. Bishop did not speak in court. The Harvard-educated biologist avoided a death sentence by pleading guilty earlier this month to...
